15The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical, microbial, and radiographic effects of local minocycline combined with surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Fifty patients with peri-implantitis were recruited, and surgical treatment with the local application of either minocycline or placebo ointment was performed. The application of minocycline was repeated with supragingival debridement at 1, 3, and 6 mo postoperatively. Plaque index, gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD),
OBJECTIVES: To test whether or not alveolar ridge preservation reduces vertical changes in the posterior maxilla compared to spontaneous healing following tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty subjects requiring extraction of maxillary posterior teeth with root apices protruding into the maxillary sinus floor were consecutively enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned to either one of two surgical interventions: an alveolar ridge preservation procedure using collagenated bovine bone mi
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vitro the changes in implant surface topography and roughness of commercial implants after instrumentation with five decontamination protocols. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two titanium implants with a sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface were placed 5 mm supra-crestally. Five groups of twelve implants were instrumented with the following protocols: a metal scaler tip (SCAL), a thermoplastic scaler tip (PEEK), a round titanium brush (RBRU), a tufted brush with tit
AIM: The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) in a bovine hydroxyapatite/collagen (BHC) carrier to augment bone formation in a canine nasal sinus model. METHODS: Eight mongrel dogs, approximately 12 months old and 30 kg in weight were used. Following preparation of bilateral sinus access windows, BHC alone (control) or loaded with E. coli-derived BMP-2 at 0.1 mg/ml was implanted in four animals, and BHC loaded with E. coli-derived BMP-2 at
BACKGROUND: Clinical benefits of local antibiotics as an adjunct to nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis have been widely reported, but most studies evaluated incipient peri-implantitis lesions, and showed incomplete treatment success rates. PURPOSE: To assess the clinical and microbiological outcomes of administering metronidazole in combination with minocycline as a local adjunct to the nonsurgical treatment of peri-implantitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and eighteen subjects wit
It was conjectured that intentional cortical perforation of the recipient bed and the ABB might enhance the initial angiogenesis and the integration of the graft.
AIM: To assess the influence of the emergence angle on marginal bone loss (MBL) and supracrestal soft tissue around dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In six mongrel dogs, the mandibular premolars and molars were extracted. After 3 months of healing, four dental implants were placed in each hemimandible. The implants were randomly allocated to receive one of four customized healing abutments, each with a different value of the restorative emergence angle: 20°, 40°, 60° or 80°. Intra-oral ra
It can be suggested that Osteon may have predictable result when it was used as a grafting material for sinus floor augmentation.
BACKGROUND: Mangosteen and propolis extracts (MAEC) have been potential therapeutic agents known to exhibit powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical and immunological efficacy of MAEC as well as safety and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) on gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. METHODS: This study was performed on 104 patients diagnosed with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis. At baseline, the participants were random
Guided bone regeneration aided by the application of occlusive membranes is a promising therapy for diverse inflammatory periodontal diseases. Symbiosis, homeostasis between the host microbiome and cells, occurs in the oral environment under normal, but not pathologic, conditions. Here, we develop a symbiotically integrating occlusive membrane by mimicking the tooth enamel growth or multiple nucleation biomineralization processes. We perform human saliva and in vivo canine experiments to confirm
BCP can achieve proper dimensional stability with minimal reduction of the graft height in a 3- to 6-year healing period after maxillary sinus augmentation. The healing period and the amount of graft material influenced the resorption of BCP.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate 3.5 years-cumulative survival rate of implants placed on augmented sinus using Osteon, a bone graft material, and to assess the height of the grafted material through radiographic evaluation. Methods: Twenty patients were treated with maxillary sinus augmentation and 45 implant fixtures were installed simultaneously or after 6 months healing period. The height of the augmented sinus and the loss of marginal bone were measured by panoramic and intrao
Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bone morphogenetic protein‐2 ( BMP ‐2) mixed with either polyethylene glycol hydrogel or synthetic bone substitute ( SBS ) on new bone formation in peri‐implant dehiscence defects after 16 weeks of healing. Materials and methods A guided bone regeneration procedure was performed in box‐type peri‐implant defects that were surgically prepared in six beagle dogs. The following four experimental groups were used (i) contr
