15Employing a national probability survey in 2012, this study tests relationships between social media, social network service (SNS) network heterogeneity, and opinion polarization. The results show that the use of social media is a positive predictor of the level of network heterogeneity on SNSS and that the relationship is mediated by several news-related activities, such as getting news, news posting, and talking about politics on SNSS. Testing the association between SNS network heterogeneity
Disagreement persists as to whether social networking sites (SNSs) are used more frequently to facilitate cross-cutting or like-minded discussions. We examine the relationship between the use of SNSs and involvement in discussions with politically similar and dissimilar others among a sample of US Democrats and Republicans. Affective polarization is negatively related to involvement in cross-cutting discussions, suggesting that individuals extend their dislike of the opposing political party to
This study tests competing hypotheses about whether diversification of news channels results in fragmentation of public opinion and decline in media power to provide the public with common subjects to think and talk about. Employing a content analysis of blog posts and mainstream media news stories during the 2004 presidential campaign, this study finds that the blog agenda is similar to that of mainstream media. Furthermore, political blogs cover the election with virtually the same agenda, reg
Drawing on a panel survey and a laboratory experiment, this study investigates incidental exposure to counter-attitudinal political information on Facebook. The frequency of Facebook use is found positively associated with incidental exposure to counter-attitudinal political information, suggesting the important role of Facebook in exposing users to political disagreement. In addition, the findings of the experiment indicate that individuals coming across counter-attitudinal Facebook posts are a
Scholarly debate persists as to whether the use of social networking sites (SNSs) encourages or discourages political discussion with people holding different opinions. Drawing on a national survey, this study focuses on Facebook and explores the predictors of cross-cutting discussion on this platform. The results reveal that political interest is positively associated with cross-cutting discussion and this relationship is mediated by the frequency of news consumption on Facebook, suggesting tha

In multi-arch tunnels, the increased rock load on the concrete lining of the main tunnel and side walls due to the excavation of adjacent tunnels is critical and must be considered in the design stage. Therefore, this study estimates the rock load of a multi-arch tunnel using two-dimensional numerical analysis, considering rock mass classifications, overburden, and construction steps. The rock load is estimated using two criteria: the factor of safety and stress variable. The rock load is undere
Abstract This study explores the relationship between age and the media's agenda-setting effects both by cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Using American National Election Studies surveys and the New York Times Index data from 1960 to 2004, we test three possible effects of age on the agenda-setting process: generational, life-cycle, and period effects. Findings show the public agenda is fairly stable across generations and age cohorts despite increasing signs of media diversification a
Strain CBA3207T, a novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, was isolated from the seashore sand of Jeju island in South Korea. Strain CBA3207T grew optimally at 25-30 °C and pH 7.0-7.5 with 3.0-4.0 % (w/v) NaCl. It was catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, and hydrolysed starch, gelatin, and Tweens 20, 40 and 80. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CBA3207T showed 96.0, 95.6, 95.6, 95.5 and 95.5 % similarity to that of Aquimarinamytili PSC33T, Aquimarinaagarivorans HQM9T, Aqu
This study examined the effects of Facebook network heterogeneity on campaign knowledge gain by looking at the process where heterogeneity facilitates exposure to information about elections. Findings suggested that Facebook network heterogeneity promoted exposure to campaign information that, in turn, predicted knowledge about candidate issue positions. This indirect effect of network heterogeneity was conditioned by the level of campaign interest. To elaborate, a more heterogeneous Facebook ne
