SJR Q1Langmuir

A superhydrophobic xerogel coating synthesized from a mixture of nanostructured fluorinated silica colloids, fluoroalkoxysilane, and a backbone silane is reported. The resulting fluorinated surface was characterized using contact angle goniometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Quantitative bacterial adhesion studies performed using a parallel plate flow cell demonstrated that the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was reduced by

SJR Q1Analytical Chemistry

Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is well-known as a promising biomarker for the early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this work, single-stranded DNA aptamers against cTnI were identified by the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential enrichment (SELEX) method. The aptamer candidates exhibited a high selectivity and sensitivity toward both cTnI and the cardiac Troponin complex. The binding affinities of each aptamer were evaluated based on their dissociation constants (Kd) by s

Synthesis of Nitric Oxide-Releasing Silica Nanoparticles
Jae Ho Shin, Sara K. Metzger, Mark H. Schoenfisch
SJR Q1Journal of the American Chemical Society

The synthesis and characterization of a new nitric oxide (NO)-releasing scaffold prepared from amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles are reported. Inorganic-organic hybrid silica was prepared via cocondensation of tetraethoxy- or tetramethoxysilane (TEOS or TMOS) and aminoalkoxysilane with appropriate amounts of ethanol (or methanol), water, and ammonia. The amine functional groups in the silica were converted to N-diazeniumdiolate NO donors via exposure to high pressures of NO (5 atm) under

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an ultrasensitive molecular screening technique with greatly enhanced Raman scattering signals from trace amounts of analytes near plasmonic nanostructures. However, research on the development of a sensor that balances signal enhancement, reproducibility, and uniformity has not yet been proposed for practical applications. In this study, we demonstrate the potential of the practical application for detecting or predicting asymptomatic breast cancer fr

SJR Q1Microbial Cell FactoriesOA

Corynebacterium glutamicum was successfully engineered to produce 5AVA from glucose by optimizing the expression of two key enzymes, lysine 2-monooxygenase and delta-aminovaleramidase. In addition, production of glutaric acid, a major byproduct, was significantly reduced by employing C. glutamicum gabT mutant as a host strain. The metabolically engineered C. glutamicum strains developed in this study should be useful for enhanced fermentative production of the novel C5 platform chemical 5AVA fro

Fluorinated Xerogel-Derived Microelectrodes for Amperometric Nitric Oxide Sensing
Jae Ho Shin, Benjamin J. Privett, Justin M. Kita, R. Mark Wightman, Mark H. Schoenfisch
SJR Q1Analytical ChemistryOA

An amperometric fluorinated xerogel-derived nitric oxide (NO) microelectrode is described. A range of fluorine-modified xerogel polymers were synthesized via the cohydrolysis and condensation of alkylalkoxy- and fluoroalkoxysilanes. Such polymers were evaluated as NO sensor membranes to identify the optimum composition for maximizing NO permeability while providing sufficient selectivity for NO in the presence of common interfering species. By taking advantage of both the versatility of sol-gel

Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Silica Nanoparticles as a Nitric Oxide Delivery Scaffold
Jae Ho Shin, Mark H. Schoenfisch
SJR Q1Chemistry of Materials

The preparation and characterization of nitric oxide (NO)-releasing silica particles formed following the synthesis of N -diazeniumdiolate-modified aminoalkoxysilanes are reported. Briefly, an aminoalkoxysilane solution was prepared by dissolution of an appropriate amount of aminoalkoxysilane in a mixture of ethanol, methanol, and sodium methoxide (NaOMe) base. The silane solution was reacted with NO (5 atm) to form N -diazeniumdiolate NO donor moieties on the aminoalkoxysilanes. Tetraethoxy- or

SJR Q1Radiographics

A study was performed to evaluate the relationship between the imaging features and clinical presentation of vertebral artery (VA) dissection. Twenty-two patients with 24 VA dissections at angiography and clinical evaluation also underwent computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The angiographic patterns of VA dissection were categorized as aneurysmal (n = 10) or steno-occlusive (n = 14). All 10 patients (10 lesions) with the aneurysmal pattern had dissection in the V4 (intradural) s

Nitric Oxide-Releasing Sol−Gel Particle/Polyurethane Glucose Biosensors
Jae Ho Shin, Stephanie M. Marxer, Mark H. Schoenfisch
SJR Q1Analytical Chemistry

A hybrid sol-gel/polyurethane glucose biosensor that releases nitric oxide is developed and characterized. The biosensor consists of a platinum electrode coated with four polymeric membranes including the following: (1) sol-gel with immobilized glucose oxidase (GOx); (2) polyurethane to protect the enzyme; (3) NO donor-modified sol-gel particle-doped polyurethane; and (4) polyurethane. This configuration was developed due to the drastic reduction in sensitivity observed for NO donor-modified sol

Improving the biocompatibility of in vivo sensors via nitric oxide release
Jae Ho Shin, Mark H. Schoenfisch
SJR Q2The Analyst

The continuous, real-time monitoring of clinically important analytes (e.g., PO2, PCO2, pH, K+, Na+, glucose, and lactate) is of great importance to human health care. Despite considerable efforts spanning several decades, the use of in vivo sensors clinically remains limited due to inadequate biocompatibility. The discovery of nitric oxide (NO) as an effective inhibitor of platelet and bacterial adhesion has opened a new direction of research related to designing the next generation of in vivo

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate vision-related quality of life (QOL) in epiphora (excessive tear production) patients. METHODS: A total of 342 epiphora patients who visited ophthalmology clinics at 21 general hospitals during a 1-week period were enrolled; 245 females and 97 males with a mean age of 52±13 years. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire on the extent to which epiphora limited their daily activities. Questions on frequency of discomfort with daily activitie

SJR Q1Analytical Chemistry

A planar microchip-based creatinine biosensor employing an oxidizing layer (e.g., a PbO2 film), where interfering redox-active substances are broken (i.e., oxidized) to redox-inactive products, was developed to facilitate the microfabrication of the sensor and to provide improved, reliable determination of creatinine in physiological samples. The feasibility of using hydrophilic polyurethanes in permselective barrier membranes for creatinine biosensors and the effect of adding a silanizing agent
