Targeting Nrf2 Signaling to Combat Chemoresistance
Jae Hong No, Yong-Beom Kim, Yong Sang Song
Journal of Cancer PreventionOA

Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a transcription factor that upregulates expression of a battery of genes to combat oxidative and electrophilic stress. Modification of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) by reactive oxygen species stabilizes Nrf2 by escaping from degradation. Nrf2 then binds to antioxidant response elements (AREs) on the promoter region of various genes. Activation of the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway plays critical roles in the chemopreventive effect of various phy

PubMed

BACKGROUND: The use of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) as a non-invasive biomarker has been evaluated in many types of cancer. This study investigated the prognostic significance of cfDNA level for ovarian cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative sera of 36 patients with ovarian cancer and of 16 with benign tumors were analyzed using commercially available copy number assay kits to measure the cfDNA level of genes including beta-2-microglobulin (B2M), member RAS oncogene family (RAB25), claudin 4 (CLDN

SJR Q2Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of serum sCD163 in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. METHODS: Preoperative serum samples from 55 patients with epithelial ovarian cancers were analyzed for sCD163 using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Me

Silencing Bmi1 expression suppresses cancer stemness and enhances chemosensitivity in endometrial cancer cells
Miseon Kim, Seul Lee, Wook Ha Park, Dong Hoon Suh, Kidong Kim, Yong Beom Kim, Jae Hong No
SJR Q1Biomedicine & PharmacotherapyOA

Bmi1 silencing suppresses cancer stemness in HEC1A and Ishikawa cells. Concurrent treatment with Bmi1 siRNA and cisplatin resulted in additive anticancer effect with a cell line-specific pattern, which was higher than that shown by cisplatin treatment alone.

SJR Q1Cancer

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed at investigating the change in the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) and the association of the HPV genotype with the prognosis. METHODS: This multicenter study included 175 patients with TSCC from 3 general hospitals between 1991 and 2009. HPV DNA was detected in paraffin-embedded tissues with genotyping chips. A survival analysis that considered clinicopathological factors, the HPV genotype, and the e

Human papillomavirus vaccine: Widening the scope for cancer prevention
Jae Hong No, Mi‐Kyung Kim, Yong‐Tark Jeon, Yong‐Beom Kim, Yong‐Sang Song
SJR Q2Molecular Carcinogenesis

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the necessary cause of cervical cancer. The HPV oncoproteins E6 and E7 have crucial roles in various steps of carcinogenesis, inducing degradation of p53 and destabilization of pRb. Several clinical trials show that recombinant HPV vaccines are safe and effective in preventing persistent infection of HPV and associated anogenital lesions. Although most clinical studies to date have investigated the effectiveness of HPV vaccines in young female subjects, elderly fema

Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Hypoxia Inducible Factor‐1α in Cervical Neoplasia

Altered angiogenesis is an important phenotype of high-grade cervical lesions and invasive cervical carcinomas. Many researchers, including us, have shown that oncoproteins of human papillomavirus could enhance the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. We investigated the change in VEGF and hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) expression patterns that occur during the carcinogenesis and progression of cervical cancer. Expressions of HIF-1alpha and VEGF were evaluated by i

Expression of mTOR protein and its clinical significance in endometrial cancer.

BACKGROUND: Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) plays a crucial role in carcinogenesis by regulating protein synthesis, and mTOR inhibitors have been identified as potential anticancer agents in various cancers. Since the most common genetic change in endometrial cancer is the mutation of phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN), a negative regulator of mTOR, we evaluated mTOR expression in endometrial cancer and its relationship with other clinicopathological characteristics and expression patt

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the use of an activity tracker with feedback increases physical activity and is safe in patients who underwent a midline laparotomy for gynecologic disorders. METHODS: Patients who were planned to undergo a midline laparotomy for gynecologic diseases wore an activity tracker at baseline and from postoperative days 1-6. Patients in the experimental arm could monitor their step counts and were encouraged to achieve the individualized step-count goal daily. In contra

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) are important factors for cancer invasion and metastasis, degrading the extracellular matrix. They are also associated with angiogenesis. Angiogenic phenotype is another feature of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). However, their associations with the progression of low-grade CIN to high-grade CIN are unexplored. We investigated whether these proteolytic enzyme expressions correlate with

SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), an irreversible inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), has promising activity against various cancers and a tolerable safety profile for long-term use as a chemopreventive agent. However, the anti-tumor effects of DFMO in ovarian cancer cells have not been entirely understood. Our study aimed to identify the effects and mechanism of DFMO in epithelial ovarian cancer cells using SKOV-3 cells. Treatment with DFMO resulted in a significantly reduced cell viabili
