BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of stroke and efficacy of bedside evaluation in diagnosing stroke in acute transient vestibular syndrome (ATVS). METHODS: We performed a prospective, single-center, observational study that had consecutively recruited 86 patients presenting with ATVS to the emergency department of Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital from January to December 2014. All patients received a constructed evaluation, including HINTS pl

Episodic ataxia (EA) is a rare neurological condition characterized by recurrent spells of truncal ataxia and incoordination. Five genes (KCNA1, CACNA1A, CACNB4, SLC1A3, and UBR4) have been linked to EA. Despite extensive efforts to genetically diagnose EA, many patients remain still undiagnosed. Whole-exome sequencing was carried out in 39 Korean patients with EA to identify pathogenic mutations of the five known EA genes. We also evaluated 40 candidate genes that cause EA as a secondary phenot

This study was performed in order to characterize the types of the infiltrating cells, and the expression profiles of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and membrane attack complex (MAC) in patients with inflammatory myopathies and dysferlinopathy. Immunohistochemical stains were performed using monoclonal antibodies against several inflammatory cell types, MHC class I, and MAC in muscles from inflammatory myopathies and dysferlinopathy. There was significant difference in the types

SJR Q2Neurology Clinical PracticeOA

Dizziness/vertigo is a common symptom of posterior circulation stroke and usually accompanies other neurologic symptoms and signs. Although strokes involving the brainstem or cerebellum may produce isolated vestibular syndrome (isolated vertigo or imbalance), the overall frequency and involved structures of isolated vestibular syndrome in the posterior circulation stroke remain uncertain. Isolated vestibular syndrome occurs in approximately 25% of the patients with posterior circulation stroke,

We identified five FRMD7 mutations in 35% of our infantile nystagmus syndrome cohort, expanding its mutational spectrum. The missense mutation c.875T>C may be a common mutation arisen from the founder effect in Korea. Optic nerve dysplasia associated with FRMD7 mutations suggests that the abnormal development of afferent visual systems may affect neural circuitry within the oculomotor system.

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

Red ginseng (the steamed root of Panax ginseng C. A. Mayer), which contains ginsenosides as its main constituents, is frequently used to treat tumor, inflammation, diabetes, stress and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in Asian countries. Ginsenoside Rhl, a bacterial metabolite of ginsenoside Rgl, is a protopanaxatriol type of ginsenosides. Liposomes do not deeply penetrate the skin and remain confined to the stratum corneum. Thus, new vesicular colloidal carriers such as ethosomes and transfers

A start codon mutation of the FRMD7 gene in two Korean families with idiopathic infantile nystagmus
Jae‐Hwan Choi, Jin‐Hong Shin, Je Hyun Seo, Jae Ho Jung, Kwang‐Dong Choi
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Idiopathic infantile nystagmus (IIN) is the involuntary oscillation of the eyes with onset in the first few months of life. The most common form of inheritance is X-linked, and mutations in FRMD7 gene are a major cause. To identify the FRMD7 gene mutations associated with X-linked IIN, we performed PCR-based DNA direct sequencing in 4 affected subjects from 2 Korean families. We also assessed structural abnormalities of retina and optic nerve head using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Geneti

Objectives: The cause of Meniere's disease (MD) is unclear but likely involves genetic and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic basis underlying MD by screening putative candidate genes for MD. Methods: Sixty-eight patients who met the diagnostic criteria for MD of the Barany Society were included. We performed targeted gene sequencing using next generation sequencing (NGS) panel composed of 45 MD-associated genes. We identified the rare varia

Background: Infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder. Identifying genetic causes of INS would help clinicians to facilitate clinical diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic utility of targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) for INS.Materials and methods: We recruited 37 patients who were referred to the Neuro-ophthalmology clinics for evaluations of INS. SJR Q2Frontiers in NeurologyOA

Objectives: Vestibular migraine (VM) is a common vestibular disorder, and familial aggregation of VM with autosomal-dominant inheritance has been described, which supports a genetic background. This study aimed to describe the clinical phenotype of a family with VM, and identify a candidate gene for VM. Methods: We recruited six individuals (four affected and two unaffected) from three consecutive generations of a Korean family with VM, and performed whole-exome sequencing to search for candidat

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the underlying pathogenesis of acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUV) using gene expression profiling combined with bioinformatics analysis. METHODS: Total RNA was extracted from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of ten AUV patients in the acute phase and from ten controls. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between these two groups were screened using microarray analysis with the cut-off criteria (|fold changes| > 1.5 and p-value < 0.05). Fu
