SJR Q1Experimental & Molecular MedicineOA

The immune system comprises a complex group of processes that provide defense against diverse pathogens. These defenses can be divided into innate and adaptive immunity, in which specific immune components converge to limit infections. In addition to genetic factors, aging, lifestyle, and environmental factors can influence immune function, potentially affecting the susceptibility of the host to disease-causing agents. Chemical compounds in certain foods have been shown to regulate signal transd

SJR Q1PLoS neglected tropical diseasesOA

The numbers of the worms are significantly correlated with the egg counts in human clonorchiasis. It is estimated that at least 110 worms are infected in a human body with EPGs around 3,000, and egg productivity of a worm per day is around 4,000.

Noise-induced annoyance from transportation noise: Short-term responses to a single noise source in a laboratory
Jae Hwan Kim, Changwoo Lim, Ji‐Young Hong, Soogab Lee
SJR Q1The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

An experimental study was performed to compare the annoyances from civil-aircraft noise, military-aircraft noise, railway noise, and road-traffic noise. Two-way within-subjects designs were applied in this research. Fifty-two subjects, who were naive listeners, were given various stimuli with varying levels through a headphone in an anechoic chamber. Regardless of the frequency weighting network, even under the same average energy level, civil-aircraft noise was the most annoying, followed by mi

Removal of sugar moieties from ginsenosides has been proposed to increase their biological effects in various disease models. In order to identify strains that can increase aglycone contents, we performed a screening using bacteria isolated from the feces of infants focusing on acid tolerance and β-glucosidase activity. We isolated 565 bacteria and selected Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LT 19-2 (LT 19-2), which exhibited the highest β-glucosidase activity with strong acid tolerance. As

High-fat and high-salt intakes are among the major risks of chronic diseases including obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Salicornia is a halophytic plant known to exert antioxidant, antidiabetic, and hypolipidemic effects, and Salicornia-extracted salt (SS) has been used as a salt substitute. In this study, the effects of SS and purified salt (PS) on the aggravation of NAFLD/NASH were compared. C57BL/6J male mice (8-wk-old) were fed a hig

SJR Q1AnimalsOA

Exercise has been suggested as a powerful intervention for health care and fitness management in humans; however, few studies have demonstrated the benefits of exercise training in dogs. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of exercise training on heart rate (HR), bone mineral density (BMD), muscle volume (MV), and hematological and serum biomarkers in dogs. Six healthy beagles completed the interval treadmill exercise, developed on the basis of the FITT principle, two times a we

Detection of Pneumocystis carinii by in situ hybridization in the lungs of immunosuppressed rats
Jae Hwan Kim, Jae-Ran Yu, Sung‐Tae Hong, C S Park
Korean Journal of Parasitology

In situ hybridization was performed to detect rat Pneumocystis carinii in the lung sections. Rats were immunosuppressed by weekly subcutaneous injection of 10 mg/kg methylprednisolone. On the 6th, 8th and 9th week of immunosuppression, the lungs were removed and fixed in 10% neutral formalin. A 22 base oligonucleotide probe complementary to P. carinii 5S ribosomal RNA was commercially synthesized and its 3' terminal was labeled with biotin. In situ hybridization was performed utilizing manual ca

Natural killer (NK) cells have recently shown renewed promise as therapeutic cells for use in treating hematologic cancer indications. Despite this promise, NK cell manufacturing workflows remain largely manual, open, and disconnected, and depend on feeders, as well as outdated unit operations or processes, often utilizing research-grade reagents. Successful scale-up of NK cells critically depends on the availability and performance of nutrient-rich expansion media and cryopreservation condition

In-vitro and in-vivo antibacterial activity of CFC-222, a new fluoroquinolone
Jae Hwan Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Antimicrobial ChemotherapyOA

CFC-222 is a novel fluoroquinolone with potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. The in-vitro and in-vivo activities of CFC-222 were compared with those of ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, lomefloxacin and sparfloxacin. Against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (quinolone-susceptible and quinolone-resistant), Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus faecalis, CFC-222 was more active than ciprofloxacin and similar to sparfloxacin. Against gram-neg

The in-vitro activity of 12 antibacterial agents against 98 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae, including 54 penicillin-resistant strains, was determined by a standardized broth microdilution method. CFC-222, vancomycin and imipenem were the most active agents, with an MIC90 of 0.5 mg/L for the test strains. CFC-222 was 16-fold more potent than ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin against all strains tested, including both penicillin-susceptible and -resistant strains. The anti-pneumococcal ac

SJR Q1Cancer Research

Abstract Background: Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) as an immune check point molecule is expressed in lung cancer cells. The homophilic interaction of CEACAM1 inhibits killing effect of T cells by co-inhibitory signal transduction. Thus, up-regulated CEACAM1 in the tumor microenvironment is considered as a promising therapeutic target for cancer. In this study, anti-cancer effect of anti-CEACAM1 monoclonal antibody (MG1124, from GC Pharma, Yongin, South Korea
