15Inter-joint coordination and gait variability in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) has not been well investigated. Hip-knee cyclograms can visualize the relationship between the hip and knee joint simultaneously. The aim of this study was to elucidate differences in inter-joint coordination and gait variability with respect to KOA severity using hip-knee cyclograms. Fifty participants with KOA (early KOA, n = 20; advanced KOA, n = 30) and 26 participants (≥ 50 years) without KOA were recruited. We analy
Gait disturbance is a common sequela of stroke. Conventional gait analysis has limitations in simultaneously assessing multiple joints. Therefore, we investigated the gait characteristics in stroke patients using hip-knee cyclograms, which have the advantage of simultaneously visualizing the gait kinematics of multiple joints. Stroke patients (n = 47) were categorized into two groups according to stroke severity, and healthy controls (n = 32) were recruited. An inertial measurement unit sensor-b
OBJECTIVE: To compare fluid thickeners composed of starch polysaccharide (STA), guar gum-based polysaccharide (GUA), and xanthan gum-based polysaccharide (XAN) with the use of a viscometer and a line spread test (LST) under various measurement conditions. METHODS: The viscosity of thickened fluid with various concentrations (range, GUA 1%-4%, XAN 1%-6%, STA 1%-7%, at intervals of 1%) was measured with a rotational viscometer with various shear rates (1.29 s(-1), 5.16 s(-1), 51.6 s(-1), and 103 s
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of SGB in BCRL patients and the efficacy of corticosteroids in SGB. STUDY DESIGN: A double-blinded, randomized, controlled trial. SETTING: A single academic hospital, outpatient setting. METHODS: In total, 32 patients with BCRL were recruited. Patients were divided randomly into 3 groups (Group A: 0.5% bupivacaine 5 mL, n = 12; Group B: 0.5% bupivacaine 4.5 mL + 20 mg of triamcinolone 0.5 mL, n = 10; and Group C: 0.5% bupivacaine 4 mL + 40 mg of triamcinolone
Exercise intensity of exoskeleton-assisted walking in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) has been reported as moderate. However, the cardiorespiratory responses to long-term exoskeleton-assisted walking have not been sufficiently investigated. We investigated the cardiorespiratory responses to 10 weeks of exoskeleton-assisted walking training in patients with SCI. Chronic nonambulatory patients with SCI were recruited from an outpatient clinic. Walking training with an exoskeleton was conduc
It can be difficult for clinicians to distinguish a paradoxical response to antituberculous therapy, worsening of an existing lesion despite adequate treatment, treatment failure, and drug resistance. We report a case of a 69-year-old woman who experienced bilateral lower extremity paralysis secondary to a paradoxical response. She had been suffering for 1 month from low back pain, due to tuberculous spondylitis. Her low back pain improved after antituberculous therapy. The low back pain, howeve
The prevalence of meeting exercise guidelines are low in Korean cancer survivors and varied by age and sex. Old age is associated with an insufficient level of aerobic exercise, and female sex is associated with low participation in resistance exercise.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of radiographic hip osteoarthritis (OA) in the Korean community-dwelling population. METHODS: This study included 11 814 individuals (5025 men and 6789 women) ≥50 years of age from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Radiographic hip OA was defined as having a Kellgren-Lawrence grading scale score ≥2. Painful hip OA was defined as radiographic hip OA with the presence of hip pain. The prevalence of r
Uncertainty in housing price fluctuation has great impact on the overall economy due to importance of housing market as both place of residence and investment target. Therefore, estimating housing market condition is a highly important task in terms of setting national policy. Primary indicator of the housing market is a ratio between rent and transaction price of housing. The research explores dynamic relationships between Rent-Transaction price ratio, housing transaction price and jeonse renta
Park, JH, Seo, KS, and Lee, S-U. Effect of superimposed electromyostimulation on back extensor strengthening: a pilot study. J Strength Cond Res 30(9): 2470-2475, 2016-Electromyostimulation (EMS) superimposed on voluntary contraction (VC) can increase muscle strength. However, no study has examined the effect of superimposing EMS on back extensor strengthening. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of superimposed EMS on back extensor strengthening in healthy adults. Twenty healt
ABSTRACT: Sexual dysfunction is a common problem after cerebral infarction; however, little is known about sexual arousal in poststroke patients. Thus, this study aimed to investigate brain activation in response to visual sexual stimuli in patients with right middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory infarction using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using fMRI in 20 participants (11 right MCA infarction patients and 9 age-matched healthy controls), we assessed brain activation elicite
BACKGROUND: Radiculopathies caused by spinal stenosis in the upper lumbar spinal canal (L1/2, L2/3, L3/4) have not been comprehensively investigated. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed 14 patients from a tertiary hospital outpatient clinic. The inclusion criteria were upper lumbar stenosis seen on MRI and radiculopathies with active denervation confirmed on electromyography. Patients with any other conditions that could explain the clinical or electrophysiological manifestations were exc
Although increased sedentary behavior is associated with poor health outcomes among breast cancer survivors, the factors associated with high sedentary time in community-dwelling breast cancer survivors are unknown. This study aimed to identify factors associated with sedentary behavior in Korean community-dwelling breast cancer survivors aged ≥ 50 years. We included 205 breast cancer survivors from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Total daily sedentary time was evalua
BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) behaviours and comorbid diseases are associated with muscle strength. However, the association between dynapenia and detailed PA behaviours, including participation in aerobic and resistance exercises and sedentary behaviour (SB), in relation to comorbid diseases has not yet been investigated. Using nationwide data, this study aimed to evaluate the independent association of dynapenia with detailed PA behaviour (participation in aerobic and resistance exercises
