15In Brief Study Design. A prospective, randomized, controlled, and double-blind trial. Objective. To evaluate the effects of 2 different doses of perioperative pregabalin administration, twice on the day of surgery, on acute postoperative pain after spinal surgery. Summary of Background Data. Besides its well-established role on neuropathic pain, pregabalin seems to be a promising adjunct to multimodal analgesic regimen following surgery. No comprehensive data exist regarding the optimal dosage o
Ramosetron was superior to ondansetron in terms of preventing vomiting and reducing the severity of nausea related to fentanyl-based IV PCA, with less adverse events, in patients with high susceptibility, undergoing lumbar spine surgery.
OBJECTIVES: In this randomized-controlled study, we investigated the effects of combined administration of pregabalin and dexamethasone on postoperative pain and analgesic requirements, and functional outcome in patients who underwent lumbar spinal surgery. METHODS: One hundred eight patients were randomized to group C (placebo+placebo), group P (pregabalin + placebo), or group PD (pregabalin+dexamethasone). According to their allocated group, patients received placebo or pregabalin 150 mg every
BACKGROUND: Perioperative cerebral hypoperfusion/ischemia is a major inciting factor of postoperative delirium, which is coupled with adverse outcome in elderly patients. Cerebral oximetry enables noninvasive assessment of the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2). This study aimed to investigate whether perioperative rSO2 variations were linked to delirium in elderly patients after spinal surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postoperative delirium was assessed for 48 hours postsurgery in 109 pa

This study evaluated the effect of oral triiodothyronine (T(3)) replacement therapy, starting on the day of the surgery, on thyroid hormone concentrations and clinical outcome in high-risk patients undergoing valvular heart surgery. Fifty patients were randomly allocated to either T(3) or placebo. In the treatment (T(3)) group patients received 20 microg of oral or nasogastric T(3) every 12 h starting just before induction of anaesthesia and until the first day after surgery. T(3) concentrations
[Purpose] This study examined the effects of neuromuscular training on knee joint stability after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were 16 adults who underwent arthroscopic anterior cruciate reconstruction and neuromuscular training. The Lysholm scale was used to assess functional disorders on the affected knee joint. A KT-2000 arthrometer was used to measure anterior displacement of the tibia against the femur. Surface electromyography was used to d
BACKGROUND: Spinal surgery in the prone position is accompanied by increased intrathoracic pressure and decreased respiratory compliance. This study investigated whether intraoperative lung protective mechanical ventilation improved lung function evaluated with pulmonary function tests in patients at risk of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) after major spinal surgery in the prone position. METHODS: Seventy-eight patients at potential risk of PPCs were randomly assigned to the protect
