15BACKGROUND: The factors affecting glioblastoma progression are of great clinical importance since dismal outcomes have been observed for glioblastoma patients. The Snail gene is known to coordinate the regulation of tumor progression in diverse tumors through induction of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT); however, its role in glioblastoma is still uncertain. Therefore, we aimed to further define its role in vitro. METHODS AND RESULTS: The small interfering RNA (siRNA) technique was employ
BRAF(V600E) mutations are involved in the development of melanoma, colon cancer, and papillary thyroid carcinoma. These mutations are also found in primary brain tumors at low to moderate frequencies. In this study, we investigated a series of brain tumors to determine the prevalence and associated clinicopathologic features of BRAF(V600E) mutations. By direct sequencing, we analyzed 223 brain tumors, including 51 gangliogliomas (GGs), 45 pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs), 12 pleomorphic xanthoastroc
This study was designed to evaluate 4 new cases of papillary glioneuronal tumors (PGNTs), 2 of which had atypical histologic features, provides extensive IHC characterization, performed comparative genomic hybridization in 2 of our cases, and reviews the recent literature. The study group comprised 3 women and 1 man, with ages ranging from 12 to 75 years. Patients presented with seizures (n = 3) or muscle spasm (n = 1), and the tumors were located in the supratentorial region of the brain (3 in
Background and Aims: Radiation-induced intestinal injury occurred in application of radiotherapy for abdominal and pelvic cancers or in nuclear accidents. Radiation-induced enteritis may be considered an ideal model of gastrointestinal inflammation. The endothelium is a crucial component of inflammation, and the endothelial dysfunction following radiation exposure induces the intestinal proinflammatory response and progression of radiation enteritis. Baicalein (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavonoid)
BACKGROUND: The skin is impacted by every form of external radiation therapy. However, effective therapeutic options for severe, acute radiation-induced skin reactions are limited. Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is known to improve cutaneous wound healing, its effects in the context of high-dose irradiation are still poorly understood. METHODS: We investigated the regenerative functions of PRP by subjecting the dorsal skin of mice to local irradiation (40 Gy) and exposing HaCaT cells to gam
Extraventricular neurocytoma (EVN) shares histological features with central neurocytoma, but has a wide morphological spectrum. Little is known regarding its clinicopathologic nature, biological behavior and genetic abnormalities. The aim of this study is to examine the diagnostic criteria, genetic abnormalities and biological behavior of EVN. Clinicopathological and molecular genetic studies were performed in seven EVNs. Among them, three cases showed atypical histology. Immunohistochemically,
A recurrent mutation affecting codon 132 of the isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) gene has been found in ~5% of primary glioblastomas (GBMs), but in >70% of secondary GBMs or oligodendroglial and astrocytic tumors. We investigated IDH1 mutations in a series of 134 brain tumors to determine the prevalence and prognostic impact of IDH1 mutations. We also examined the correlations among histology, p53 and PTEN immunoexpression, MGMT methylation status, 1p 19q co-deletion and EGFR gene amplification
The transcriptional factor Snail and enzyme cyclo-oxygenase-2 (Cox-2) are suggested to be important effectors of invasiveness and tumorigenesis in various tumors. Tumors of higher grade have the propensity for tumor cell migration and invasiveness. This study was performed in order to evaluate the association between Snail and Cox-2 expressions and their values as prognostic factors in various grades of glioma, Specimens of 56 patients with glioma were used in the study. Univariate analysis show
Background and Aim: Radiation-induced enteropathy is frequently observed after radiation therapy for abdominal and pelvic cancer or occurs secondary to accidental radiation exposure. The acute effects of irradiation on the intestine might be attributed to inhibition of mitosis in the crypts, as the loss of proliferative functions impairs development of the small intestinal epithelium and its barrier function. Especially, oxidative damage to intestinal epithelial cells is a key event in th
We report four cases of biopsy-proven B-cell-rich primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS). The mean age of the patients was 29 years (range, 23-37 years). The patients suffered from unilateral weakness (n = 2), seizure (n = 1), and hypersomnia, anorexia and confusion (n = 1). The vital signs and the results of laboratory tests were within normal limits in all the four cases except erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). ESR was elevated in one patient an
These results suggest that the prognostic implications of the TERT promoter mutation are dependent on clinicopathological parameters.
Glioblastoma (GBM) with oligodendroglioma component (GBMO) is a newly described GBM subtype in the 2007 World Health Organization classification. However, its biological and genetic characteristics are largely unknown. We investigated the clinicopathological and molecular features of 34 GBMOs and compared the survival rate of these patients with those of patients with astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, anaplastic oligoastrocytoma (AOA), and conventional GBMs in our hospital. GBMO could be divided i
