김미아, 신말순, 이재민, 조한샘, 김창주, 김영준, 최혜란, 전정원

Purpose: Berberine is a type of isoquinoline alkaloid that has been used to treat various diseases. A neuroprotective effect of berberine against cerebral ischemia has been reported; however, the effects of berberine on apoptosis in relation to reactive astrogliosis and microglia activation under ischemic conditions have not yet been fully evaluated. In the present study, we investigated the effects of berberine on global ischemia-induced apoptosis, and focused on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (

허유미, 신말순, 이재민, 김창주, 백상빈, 김계환, 백성수

Purpose: Scopolamine is a nonselective muscarinic cholinergic receptor antagonist, which induces impairment of learning ability and memory function. Exercise is known to ameliorate brain disturbance induced by brain injuries. In the present study, we investigated the effect of treadmill exercise on short-term memory in relation to acetylcholinesterase (AChE) expression in the hippocampus, using a scopolamine-induced amnesia model in mice. Methods: To induce amnesia, 1 mg/kg scopolamine hydrobrom

Purpose: Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a possible consequence of several neurological disorders. NLUTD may produce debilitating symptoms and serious complications, such as chronic renal failure, and recurrent urinarytract infections. Many animal studies of NLUTD symptoms have focused on animal models of cerebral ischemia. In the presentstudy, we investigated the effects of treadmill exercise on memory function and its relation to cell proliferation and apoptosisin the hip

Purpose: Rotenone is the most widely used neurotoxin for the making Parkinson disease (PD) animal model. The neurodegenerative disorder PD shows symptoms, such as slowness of movements, tremor at resting, rigidity, disturbance of gait, and instability of posture. We investigated whether treadmill running improves motor ability using rotenone-caused PD rats. The effect of treadmill running on PD was also assessed in relation with apoptosis of cerebellar Purkinje cells. Methods: Treadmill running

신말순, 박헌경, 김태운, 지은상, 이재민, 최한성, 김미예, 김영표

Purpose: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes cognitive impairments, motor deficits, and neuropsychiatric/behavioral deficits problems. Transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) facilitates functional recovery from brain insults. Treadmill exercise increases neurogenesis and inhibits apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the effects of BMSC transplantation in combination with treadmill exercise on memory function, by evaluating its effect on neurogenesis and apoptosis in the hippoc

Journal of exercise rehabilitation

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe type of stroke causing neu-rological dysfunction with high mortality rate. Depression is one of the most common complications of ICH. In the present study, the effects of treadmill exercise on ICH-induced depressive symptoms in relation with apoptosis were investigated using rats. ICH rat model was induced by injection of collagenase into the hippocampus using stereotaxic instru-ment. Open field test for activity and forced swimming test for depres-sive

Purpose: Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1) in the brain is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and plays a neuroprotective role in cerebral ischemia and neurodegenerative disorders. The effect of preischemic treadmill exercise on chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH)-induced spatial learning memory impairment, microvascular injury, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in relation with SIRT1 expression was evaluated. Methods: Prior to bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (

Treadmill exercise improves depression-like symptoms by enhancing serotonergic function through upregulation of 5-HT1A expression in the olfactory bulbectomized rats
신말순, 박상서, 이재민, 김태운, 김영표
Journal of exercise rehabilitation

The olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) is a well-known method inducing ani-mal model of depression. Depression is associated with dysfunction of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) system. In the present study, an-tidepressive effect of treadmill exercise was investigated using olfacto-ry bulbectomized rats. After bilateral bulbectomy, the rats in the tread-mill exercise groups were subjected to run on a treadmill for 30 min once a day during 28 days. Increased immobility time and decreased fast time

Journal of exercise rehabilitation

Parkinson disease is one of the common brain diseases caused by do-paminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and dopaminergic fiber loss in the striatum. In the present study, the effects of treadmill exer-cise on motor performance, dopaminergic loss of neurons and fibers, and α-synuclein expression in the nigrostriatum were evaluated using rotenone-induced Parkinson rats. For the induction of Parkinson rats, 3-mg/kg rotenone was injected, once a day for 14 consecutive days. Treadmill run

Treadmill exercise ameliorates depressive symptoms through increasing serotonin expression in postpartum depression rats
지은상, 이재민, 김태운, 김유미, 김연수, 김기정
Journal of exercise rehabilitation

Postpartum depression (PPD) is defined as the depressive symptoms that occur from the moment of delivery until 12 months after delivery. PPD symptoms are closely associated with reduced activity of the se-rotonergic system. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) plays an im-portant role in the pathogenesis of depression. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) catalyzes the rate-limiting step of 5-HT biosynthesis in the seroto-nergic neurons. Exercise exerts anti-depressive effect on depression patients as

Androgen deprivation therapy, also known as chemical castration, has been used as an adjunct to psychotherapy for sex offenders. Goserelin and bicalutamide are drugs used for chemical castration. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a key neurotransmitter involved in mood changes, such as depression. We investigated the effects of surgical and chemical castration on depressive symptoms in rats. Surgical castration was performed through a bilateral orchiectomy. Bicalutamide was administrated

Journal of exercise rehabilitation

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a most common age-related neurodegener-ative disease. AD is characterized by a progressive loss of neurons causing cognitive dysfunction. The cerebellum is closely associated with integration of movement, including motor coordination, control, and equilibrium. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of tread-mill exercise on the survival of Purkinje neurons in relation with reactive astrocyte in the cerebellum using Aβ25–35–induced AD rats. AD was in-duced by a

Wnt signaling pathway is implicated in the alleviating effect of treadmill exercise on maternal separation-induced depression
이재민, 김태운, 박상서, 김창주, 신말순, 이삼준, 김상훈, 백성수
Journal of exercise rehabilitation

Maternal separation in the developmental stage has a negative influ-ence on brain development and causes depression. The extracellular ligand, Wnt, and its receptors play an important role in axis formation and neural development. Exercise inhibits apoptosis, increases cell proliferation, and exerts antidepressive effect. In this study, the effect of treadmill exercise on the maternal separation-induced depression was investigated in the aspect of Wnt signaling pathway. The maternal sep-aration
