15BACKGROUND: The prevalence and economic burden of chronic diseases are increasing worldwide. Nevertheless, little information is available on catastrophic health expenditures (CHE) associated with chronic diseases in Korea. This study explored the burden of household out-of-pocket health expenditures among the Korean population for different chronic diseases. METHODS: This study was conducted utilizing data collected from the 7,006 households that participated in the Korea Health Panel Survey (K
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify the impact of poverty on suicide risk in older adults. METHOD: The data used in this study was obtained from the National Health Insurance Service-Senior claims database from 2002 to 2013. A total of 558 147 individuals were followed for up to 12 years. Poverty was assessed from insurance premium levels, and causes of death were analysed by linking individuals' deaths to the data for causes of death from the National Statistics Office in South Korea. Cox proporti
BACKGROUND: Cancer imposes significant economic challenges for individuals, families, and society. Households of cancer patients often experience income loss due to change in job status and/or excessive medical expenses. Thus, we examined whether changes in economic status for such households is affected by catastrophic health expenditures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHPS) Panel 1st-4th (2008- 2011 subjects) data and extracted records from 211 out of 5,332 hous
BACKGROUND: Although severe dementia could protect against suicide death by decreasing a person's capacity to implement a suicide plan, patients with early dementia may have better cognition, giving them more sustained insight into their disease and better enabling them to carry out a suicide plan. This study investigated suicide risk in older adults within 1 year of receiving a diagnosis of dementia. METHODS: This study used National Health Insurance Service Senior Cohort data and included 36 5
BACKGROUND: In 2002, a voluntary diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) payment system was introduced in South Korea for seven disease groups, and participation in the DRGs was mandated for all hospitals beginning in 2013. The primary aim of this study was to compare results reflective of patient care between voluntary participation hospitals (VPHs) and mandatory participation hospitals (MPHs) governed by either the DRGs or fee-for-service (FFS) payment system. METHODS: We collected DRGs and FFS inpati
BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance has been significantly associated with the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. However, despite the common prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with type 2 diabetes, its relationship with the risk of CVD remains unclear. Here, we have examined the association of sleep disturbance with the incidence of all CVD and all-cause mortality in patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We used the Korean National Health I
BACKGROUND: Although government has implemented medical-aid policy that provides assistance to the poor with almost free medical services, there are low-income people who do not receive necessary medical services in Korea. The aim of this study is to highlight the characteristics of Medical-Aid enrollees, the poor not enrolled in Medical-Aid, and the near poor and their utilization and costs for health care. METHODS: This study draws on the 2012 Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS), a nationally r
OBJECTIVES: Catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) means that the medical spending of a household exceeds a certain level of capacity to pay. Previous studies of CHE have focused on benefits supported by the public sector or high medical cost incurred by treating diseases in South Korea. This study examines variance of CHE in these households according to changes in employment status. We also determine whether a relationship exists according to income level. DESIGN: A longitudinal study. SETTING:
AIM: To examine whether long-term care insurance (LTCI) reduces medical utilization and the burden of medical costs of beneficiaries. METHODS: The elderly cohort database of the National Health Insurance Service during 2005-2013 was used. The participants were 3029 beneficiaries who received consecutive LTCI services. We carried out a 1:3 case-control match on the propensity score to select a comparison group, and the final participants were 12 116 people, including 9087 who formed the control g
Although cancer patients are known to experience mental disorders and face suicide risk, little is known about the relationship between mental illness and death by suicide in this group. As such, this study aims to examine the association between mental disorders and suicide risk among cancer patients. We used nationally representative cohort data, and included newly diagnosed cancer patients from 2004 to 2012 with whom we followed-up throughout 2013. We used the clinical diagnoses of all mental
BACKGROUND: Although persons with disabilities need access to comprehensive and consistent healthcare services, a significant number of the poor with disabilities do not receive Medical-Aid due to the conditions of eligibility. We aimed to compare the financial burden of healthcare services between two groups of poor persons with disabilities: those not enrolled in Medical-Aid and Medical-Aid enrollees. METHODS: This study used the 1st-8th data (2008-2014 year) of Panel Survey of Employment for
