15Delta neutrophil index (DN) is the immature granulocyte fraction provided by a blood cell analyzer (ADVIA 2120; Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, Deerfield, Ill), which is determined by subtracting the fraction of mature polymorphonuclear leukocytes from the sum of myeloperoxidase-reactive cells. The purpose of this study was to define the role of DN in differential diagnosis and prognosis prediction of patients with sepsis. Hospital records of 273 patients were retrospectively collected: 47 with
For the assessment of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs), a chest computed tomography (CT) is often performed as a combination of a nonenhanced and an enhanced scan. A nonenhanced scan is used for the detection of calcification in the SPN or lymph node, as the presence of calcification is one of the important determinants of benignity. An enhanced scan is informative in providing the degree and pattern of enhancement. In particular, the degree of enhancement of an SPN after iodine injection has b
ABO blood groups are known to influence the plasma level of von Willebrand factor (VWF), but little is known about the relationship between ABO and coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). We analyzed the influence of ABO genotypes on VWF antigen, FVIII activity, and their quantitative relationship in 11,673 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. VWF, FVIII, and FVIII/VWF levels varied significantly among O, A (A1 and A2), B and AB subjects, and the extent of which varied
(1) Background: Quantification of platelet division is challenging because automated Coulter cell counters produce equivocal platelet counts. (2) Methods: We applied the flow cytometric cell tracking dye dilution assay as a popular immunological method to evaluate lymphocyte proliferation to prove and quantitate platelet division. We also devised a method relying on platelet culture in a semisolid medium which enabled dividing platelets to be identified by limiting the diffusive movement of plat
Dual-energy perfusion CT was more accurate than perfusion scintigraphy was for predicting postoperative lung function.
Lymphoid tissue is a normal component of the lung. The various lymphoproliferative diseases affect the lung parenchyma. The purpose of this article is to classify various lymphoproliferative diseases and to understand their computed tomography features of pulmonary involvement. The examples include follicular bronchiolitis, lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, plasma cell granuloma, Castleman disease, lymphomatoid granulomatosis, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Pathologic correlat
BACKGROUND: Stored platelets undergo deleterious changes, referred to as platelet storage lesions (PSLs), which accelerate the desialylation of platelets and result in their phagocytosis and clearance by hepatic macrophages. Recent studies have reported that Ashwell-Morell receptor binds to desialylated platelets, thereby inducing hepatic thrombopoietin (TPO) production in a mouse model. Therefore, this study aimed to demonstrate these relationships between PSL and hepatic TPO production in huma
This research introduces a method to directly detect serotonin in a single platelet through single-entity electrochemistry. Platelets isolated from human blood were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and current-time measurements. When a single platelet collides with an ultramicroelectrode, serotonin inside the platelet is oxidized at the electrode surface, and an anodic current peak is consequently observed during measurement. The concentration of serotonin can be determined by integrating this pea
Procoagulant or impaired fibrinolytic states as well as inflammatory reactions mediated by cytokines are likely involved in the pathogenesis of acute ischemic stroke. We examined the potential relationship between interleukin 6 (IL-6) and hemostatic markers. The procoagulant and fibrinolytic states were assessed in 46 patients with acute stroke by measuring plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), and plasminogen-antiplasmin complex (PAP).
The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between factor XIII (FXIII) activity and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) parameters and also to evaluate the clinical usefulness of DIC diagnosis. Citrated plasma from eighty patients with potential DIC was analyzed for FXIII activity. The primary patient conditions (48 male and 32 female, mean age, 51 years) were malignancy (n = 29), infection (n = 25), inflammation (n = 6), heart disease (n= 3), thrombosis (n = 2), inj
The early detection and timely treatment are the most important factors for improving the outcome of patients with sepsis. Sepsis-related clinical score, such as SIRS, SOFA and LODS, were defined to identify patients with suspected infection and to predict severity and mortality. A few hematological parameters associated with organ dysfunction and infection were included in the score although various clinical pathology parameters (hematology, serum chemistry and plasma coagulation) in blood samp
OBJECTIVE: Subcutaneous local anaesthetic injection can be painful to patients in the ED. We evaluated the effect of cryotherapy by application of an ice cube to the injection site prior to injection in patients with simple lacerations. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomised, controlled trial in consented patients with simple lacerations needing primary repair at a single emergency centre from April to July 2016. We randomly assigned patients undergoing repair for simple lacerations to
VWF is extensively glycosylated with biantennary core fucosylated glycans. Most N-linked and O-linked glycans on VWF are sialylated. FVIII is also glycosylated, with a glycan structure similar to that of VWF. ST3GAL sialyltransferases catalyze the transfer of sialic acids in the α2,3 linkage to termini of N- and O-glycans. This sialic acid modification is critical for VWF synthesis and activity. We analyzed genetic and phenotypic data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study for
