15Parity-time (PT) symmetry and associated non-Hermitian properties in open physical systems have been intensively studied in search of new interaction schemes and their applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an electrical circuit producing key non-Hermitian properties and unusual wave dynamics grounded on anti-PT (APT) symmetry. Using a resistively coupled amplifying-LRC-resonator circuit, we realize a generic APT-symmetric system that enables comprehensive spectral and time-domain ana
We study spectral singularities and critical field enhancement factors associated with embedded photonic bound states in subwavelength periodic Si films. Ultrahigh-Q resonances supporting field enhancement factor exceeding 10(8) are obtained in the spectral vicinity of exact embedded eigenvalues in spite of deep surface modulation and vertical asymmetry of the given structure. Treating relations between the partial resonance Q and field enhancement factors with an analytical coupled-mode model,
Time-asymmetric state-evolution properties while encircling an exceptional point are presently of great interest in search of new principles for controlling atomic and optical systems. Here, we show that encircling-an-exceptional-point interactions that are essentially reciprocal in the linear interaction regime make a plausible nonlinear integrated optical device architecture highly nonreciprocal over an extremely broad spectrum. In the proposed strategy, we describe an experimentally realizabl
Resonant periodic surfaces and films enable new functionalities with wide applicability in practical optical systems. Their material sparsity, ease of fabrication, and minimal interface count provide environmental and thermal stability and robustness in applications. Here, we report an experimental bandpass filter fashioned in a single patterned silicon layer on a quartz substrate. Its performance corresponds to bandpass filters requiring 15 traditional Si/SiO(2) thin-film layers. The feasibilit
We demonstrate the plasmonic analogue of a coherent photonic effect known as coherent perfect absorption. A periodically nanopatterned metal film perfectly absorbs multiple coherent light beams coupling to a single surface plasmon mode. The perfect absorbing state can be switched to a nearly perfect scattering state by tuning the phase difference between the incident beams. We theoretically explain the plasmonic coherent perfect absorption by considering time-reversal symmetry of surface plasmon
Recently, synthetic optical materials represented via non-Hermitian Hamiltonians have attracted significant attention because of their nonorthogonal eigensystems, enabling unidirectionality, nonreciprocity and unconventional beam dynamics. Such systems demand carefully configured complex optical potentials to create skewed vector spaces with a desired metric distortion. In this paper, we report optically generated non-Hermitian photonic lattices with versatile control of real and imaginary sub-l
We provide a modified Fano resonance formula applicable to dissipative two-port resonance systems. Based on a generic coupled-resonator model, the formula embodies loss-related correction terms and fundamental resonance parameters that can be determined by an analytic method or experimentally as opposed to finding phenomenological parameters by fitting to numerical results. The theory applies physically meaningful resonance parameters including resonance frequency, total decay rates, and partial
Engaging both theory and experiment, we investigate resonant photonic lattices in which the duty cycle tends to zero. Corresponding dielectric nanowire grids are mostly empty space if operated as membranes in vacuum or air. These grids are shown to be effective wideband reflectors with impressive polarizing properties. We provide computed results predicting nearly complete reflection and attendant polarization extinction in multiple spectral regions. Experimental results with Si nanowire arrays
By applying formulation based on time reversibility, we provide the analytic theory of resonance properties of metallic nanoslit arrays. We model lossy resonant systems in which a resonance is induced by a single quasi-bound mode (QBM). It is consistent with the Fano resonance theory of quantum interference of auto-ionizing atoms and captures the essential characteristics of dissipative resonant systems. We show that time-reversibility requirements lead to analytical solutions for the resonant t
We propose a monolithic focus-tunable lens structure based on the dielectric-elastomer actuator (DEA) technology. In our focus-tunable lens, a soft lens and radial in-plane actuator mimicking the ocular focal-tuning mechanism are constructed in a single body of an optimized dielectric-elastomer film. We provide device fabrication methods including elastomer synthesis, structure formation, and packaging process steps. Performance test measurements show 93% focal tunability and 7 ms response time
Abstract The topological properties of photonic microstructures are of great interest because of their experimental feasibility for fundamental study and potential applications. Here, we show that robust guided‐mode‐resonance states exist in photonic domain‐wall structures whenever the complex photonic band structures involve certain topological correlations in general. Using the non‐Hermitian photonic analogy of the one‐dimensional Dirac equation, we derive essential conditions for photonic Jac
Metallic nanostructures are of immense scientific interest owing to unexpectedly strong interaction with light in deep subwavelength scales. Resonant excitations of surface and cavity plasmonic modes mediate strong light localization in nanoscale objects. Nevertheless, the role of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPP) in light transmission through a simple one-dimensional system with metallic nanoslits has been the subject of longstanding debates. Here, we propose a unified theory that consistently e
Nanophotonic light emitters are key components in numerous application areas because of their compactness and versatility. Here, we propose a topological beam emitter structure that takes advantage of submicrometer footprint size, small divergence angle, high efficiency, and adaptable beam shaping capability. The proposed structure consists of a topological junction of two guided-mode resonance gratings inducing a leaky Jackiw-Rebbi state resonance. The leaky Jackiw-Rebbi state leads to in-plane
This Letter describes a Stokes vector measurement method based on a snapshot interferometric common-path spectropolarimeter. The proposed scheme, which employs an interferometric polarization-modulation module, can extract the spectral polarimetric parameters Ψ(k) and Δ(k) of a transmissive anisotropic object by which an accurate Stokes vector can be calculated in the spectral domain. It is inherently strongly robust to the object 3D pose variation, since it is designed distinctly so that the me
