15The association of diabetes with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains unclear. The risk of diabetes in patients with IBD compared with non-IBD controls was investigated. Using the National Health Insurance database of South Korea, 8070 patients with IBD based on the International Classification of Disease 10th revision (ICD-10) codes and rare intractable disease codes for Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) were compared with 40,350 non-IBD individuals (2010–2014). Newly diagnos
Background and Aims: It is not known whether inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) enhances the risk of Parkinson’s disease (PD) or whether PD diagnosis is the result of increased health care use. We determined the risk of developing PD among patients with IBD in terms of health care and medication use. Methods: A nationwide population-based study was conducted using claims data from the Korean National Health care Insurance service. From 2010 to 2013, patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerativ
Both type 2 diabetes and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and psoriasis (PsO) are risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Whether presence of IMIDs in patients with type 2 diabetes increases their cardiovascular risk remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes and IMIDs. Patients with type 2 diabet
Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) may cause acute systemic and lung inflammation. However, the detailed mechanism of this inflammatory cascade has not been fully elucidated. Inactive rhomboid protein 2 (iRhom2) is essential for the maturation of TNF-α converting enzyme (TACE), which is required for TNF-α secretion. We evaluated the role of iRhom2 in a mouse model of intestinal I/R using iRhom2 knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice. Lung injury following intestinal I/R was significantly atten
The CMV antigenemia assay shows low sensitivity but high specificity for detecting CMV colitis and may predict steroid-refractory UC. Early rescue therapy might be considered in UC patients positive for CMV antigenemia.
Perianal fistulas predicted the development of nonperianal fistulas and intra-abdominal abscesses in Korean CD patients. Therefore, patients with perianal fistulizing CD should be carefully monitored for complicated fistulas or abscesses.
,Delftia acidovorans is a gram-negative motile rod found ubiquitously in soil and in water. Confirmed isolation from clinical infections is rare, and has been documented mostly in immunocompromised patients or those with indwelling catheters. A 53-year-old man was referred for the evaluation of a huge mass-like lesion found incidentally by chest X-ray. The lesion occupied more than half of the right lung and was diagnosed as a large loculated pleural effusion by CT scan. Bloody pus was drained t
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Metabolic syndrome may share the pathophysiology of adipose tissue dysregulation and inadequate immune response with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. We determined the association of abdominal obesity [AO] with the risk of developing IBD. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Services database. A total of 10 082 568 participants of the 2009 national health screening programme were enrolled. Newly diagnose
Emerging evidence that an elevated serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) level is associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer, but still controversial. The aim of this study to assess the relationship between GGT level and risk of gastrointestinal cancer, and the contribution of the interaction of hyperglycemia with elevated GGT level to the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer by the stratified analysis. A total of 8,120,665 Koreans who received medical checkups in 2009 were in
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) remains unclear. We evaluated the risk for developing IPF in patients with IBD using a nationwide population-based study. METHODS: Using claims data from the National Health Insurance service in Korea, patients with IBD, including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), were identified through both the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Dis
Creeping fat (CrF) is an extraintestinal manifestation observed in patients with Crohn’s disease (CD). It is characterized by the accumulation of mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) that wraps around the intestinal wall. Although the role of CrF in CD is still debated, multiple studies have highlighted a correlation between CrF and inflammation, as well as fibrostenosais of the intestine, which contributes to the worsening of CD symptoms. However, the mechanism underlying the potential role of CrF i
