SJR Q1EBioMedicineOA

The current study is unprecedented in terms of both disease diversity and diagnostic accuracy, which is compatible or even better than an average otolaryngologist. The classifier was trained with data in a various acquisition condition, which is suitable for the practical environment. This study shows the usefulness of utilizing a deep learning model in the early detection and treatment of ear disease in the clinical situation. SJR Q1JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck SurgeryOA

Even with protective head bandages, 1.5-T MRI in patients with CIs led to a variety of adverse events, including discomfort or pain and displacement of the internal magnet. Therefore, sedation and careful head positioning may be appropriate for some patients with CIs who undergo MRI, and these patients should be carefully monitored to decrease the likelihood of such adverse effects.

Synergistic airway gland mucus secretion in response to vasoactive intestinal peptide and carbachol is lost in cystic fibrosis
Jae Young Choi, Nam Soo Joo, Mauri E. Krouse, Jin V. Wu, Robert C. Robbins, Juan P. Ianowski, John W. Hanrahan, Jeffrey J. Wine
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical InvestigationOA

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by dysfunction of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), an anion channel whose dysfunction leads to chronic bacterial and fungal airway infections via a pathophysiological cascade that is incompletely understood. Airway glands, which produce most airway mucus, do so in response to both acetylcholine (ACh) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). CF glands fail to secrete mucus in response to VIP, but do so in response to ACh. Because vagal cholinergic

Nasal commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis enhances interferon-λ-dependent immunity against influenza virus
Hyun Jik Kim, Ara Jo, Yung Jin Jeon, Sujin An, Kang‐Mu Lee, Sang Sun Yoon, Jae Young Choi
SJR Q1MicrobiomeOA

The human nasal commensal S. epidermidis mediates front-line antiviral protection against IAV infection through modulation of IFN-λ-dependent innate immune mechanisms in the nasal mucosa, thereby demonstrating the role of host-bacterial commensalism in shaping human antiviral responses.

Autoimmunity as a Candidate for the Etiopathogenesis of Meniere's Disease: Detection of Autoimmune Reactions and Diagnostic Biomarker Candidate
Sung Huhn Kim, Jin Young Kim, Hyun Jin Lee, Mia Gi, Bo Gyung Kim, Jae Young Choi
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Meniere's disease is an inner ear disorder that can manifest as fluctuating vertigo, sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. However, the pathologic mechanism of Meniere's disease is still unclear. In this study, we evaluated autoimmunity as a potential cause of Meniere's disease. In addition we tried to find useful biomarker candidates for diagnosis. We investigated the protein composition of human inner ear fluid using liquid column mass spectrometry, the autoimmune reaction

SJR Q1Otology & Neurotology

Mastoid and epitympanic obliteration is an effective option for preventing a retraction pocket and cholesteatoma recurrence in patients with a poorly functioning eustachian tube or a defective scutum, while preserving the same advantage of the canal wall up technique.

Substance P stimulates human airway submucosal gland secretion mainly via a CFTR-dependent process
Jae Young Choi, Monal Khansaheb, Nam Soo Joo, Mauri E. Krouse, Robert C. Robbins, David Weill, Jeffrey J. Wine
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical InvestigationOA

Chronic bacterial airway infections are the major cause of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF). Normal airway defenses include reflex stimulation of submucosal gland mucus secretion by sensory neurons that release substance P (SubP). CFTR is an anion channel involved in fluid secretion and mutated in CF; the role of CFTR in secretions stimulated by SubP is unknown. We used optical methods to measure SubP-mediated secretion from human submucosal glands in lung transplant tissue. Glands from control

Mode of parotid involvement in external auditory canal carcinoma
Jae Young Choi, Eun‐Chang Choi, Ho‐Ki Lee, Jong-Bum Yoo, Sun Goo Kim, Won‐Sang Lee
SJR Q3The Journal of Laryngology & OtologyOA

Until now, little was known about the mode of parotid involvement in external auditory canal (EAC) carcinoma. The incidence of parotid node metastasis and direct parotid invasion was examined in patients with EAC carcinoma. The study comprised 11 patients with squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and 10 patients with adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACC). A retrospective review of the surgical specimens was undertaken with specific reference to parotid node metastasis and parotid invasion. Parotid node meta

Correlation between genotype and phenotype in patients with bi‐allelic SLC26A4 mutations

Mutation of SLC26A4 is the most common cause of prelingual hearing loss in East Asia. Patients with SLC26A4 mutations have variable phenotypes ranging from non-syndromic hearing loss to Pendred syndrome. Here, we analyzed the correlation between genotype and various inner ear phenotypes and found a possible underlying mechanism. This study included 111 patients with bi-allelic SLC26A4 mutations who had bilateral enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) and hearing loss. p.H723R (61%), c.919-2A>G (24%)

Mutational Analysis of EYA1, SIX1 and SIX5 Genes and Strategies for Management of Hearing Loss in Patients with BOR/BO Syndrome
Mee Hyun Song, Tae-Jun Kwon, Hui Ram Kim, Ju Hyun Jeon, Jeong‐In Baek, Won‐Sang Lee, Un‐Kyung Kim, Jae Young Choi
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Auditory rehabilitation in BOR/BO syndrome should be individually tailored keeping in mind the high failure rate after middle ear surgeries. Successful outcome can be expected with cochlear implantations in patients with BOR/BO syndrome who cannot benefit from hearing aids. The novel EYA1 mutations may add to the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of BOR syndrome in the East Asian population.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To analyze the value of preoperative diagnostic tools in predicting the status of the cochleovestibular nerve (CVN) in patients with narrow internal auditory canals (IAC). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series at a tertiary hospital. METHODS: Eight profoundly deaf patients with narrow IACs who received auditory brainstem implantation were included in this study. The results of preoperative imaging, electrophysiologic, and auditory tests were correlated with the CVN statu

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Discriminating between inherited and non-inherited sporadic hearing loss is challenging. Here, we attempted to delineate genetic inheritance in simplex cases of severe-to-profound congenital hearing loss in Korean children. Variations in SLC26A4 and GJB2 in 28 children with bilateral severe-to-profound non-syndromic hearing loss (NSHL) without familial history were analyzed using Sanger sequencing. Genetic analysis of individuals without mutations in SLC26A4 and GJB2 was performed by whole exome
