15Activated microglia are thought to undergo apoptosis as a self-regulatory mechanism. To better understand molecular mechanisms of the microglial apoptosis, apoptosis-resistant variants of microglial cells were selected and characterized. The expression of lipocalin 2 (lcn2) was significantly down-regulated in the microglial cells that were resistant to NO-induced apoptosis. lcn2 expression was increased by inflammatory stimuli in microglia. The stable expression of lcn2 as well as the addition o
Caspase-9 (CASP-9) is an initiator CASP in the apoptosome-driven apoptosis pathway and plays an important role in the development and progression of cancer. Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the CASP-9 gene may influence the promoter activity of this gene, thereby modulating susceptibility to lung cancer. To test this hypothesis, we examined the association of four polymorphisms [-1263A>G, -905T>G, -712C>T and -293_-275delCGTGAGGTCAGTGCGGGGA (-293del)] in the CASP-9 promoter with the risk
For a CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), cation-exchange membrane (CEM)-based membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers are among the most commercially viable systems; however, the acidic environment in these electrolyzers lowers the CO2RR selectivity. Herein, we outline broad methods for enhancing the performance of CEM MEA electrolyzers by providing an alkaline environment for the cathode. An appropriate amount of anion exchange ionomer, high-alkali cation concentration, and thick catalyst
Two-pore domain K+ (K2P) channels have been shown to modulate neuronal excitability. The physiological role of TWIK-1, the first identified K2P channel, in neuronal cells is largely unknown, and we reported previously that TWIK-1 contributes to the intrinsic excitability of dentate gyrus granule cells (DGGCs) in mice. In the present study, we investigated the coexpression of TWIK-1 and TASK-3, another K2P member, in DGGCs. Immunohistochemical staining data showed that TASK-3 proteins were highly
Although there is a growing interest in the role of gastric microbiome on the development of gastric cancer, the exact mechanism is largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the changes of gastric microbiome during gastric carcinogenesis, and to predict the functional potentials of the microbiome involved in the cancer development. The gastric microbiome was analyzed using gastric juice samples from 88 prospectively enrolled patients, who were classified into gastritis, gastric adenoma, or early/
Clusterin (CLU), a glycoprotein, is involved in apoptosis, producing two alternatively spliced isoforms in various cell types. The pro-apoptotic CLU appears to be a nuclear isoform (nuclear clusterin; nCLU), and the secretory CLU (sCLU) is thought to be anti-apoptotic. The detailed molecular mechanism of nCLU as a pro-apoptotic molecule has not yet been clear. In the current study, overexpressed nCLU induced apoptosis in human kidney cells. Biochemical studies revealed that nCLU sequestered Bcl-
The six-step operation of surface-mounted permanent magnet machine drives in a flux weakening region has many advantages compared to the pulse width modulation mode, such as the reduced switching loss and fully utilized inverter output voltage. However, if the ratio of the sampling frequency to the fundamental frequency is low in fixed sampling system, the low-frequency oscillation in the current can be incurred in the six-step operation. The low-frequency current causes a system stability probl
BACKGROUND: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) plays an important role in the development of lung cancer. DNA sequence variations in the COX-2 gene may lead to altered COX-2 production and/or activity, and so they cause inter-individual differences in the susceptibility to lung cancer. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the association between the 8473T>C polymorphism in the 3'-untranslated region of the COX-2 gene and the risk of lung cancer in a Korean population. METHODS: The COX-2 genotypes were
14-3-3 proteins are mostly expressed in the brain and are closely involved in numerous brain functions and various brain disorders. Among the isotypes of the 14-3-3 proteins, 14-3-3γ is mainly expressed in neurons and is highly produced during brain development, which could indicate that it has a significance in neural development. Furthermore, the distinctive levels of temporally and locally regulated 14-3-3γ expression in various brain disorders suggest that it could play a substantial role in
Anoctamin-1 (ANO1) acts as a Ca(2+)-activated Cl(-) channel in various normal tissues, and its expression is increased in several different types of cancer. Therefore, understanding the regulation of ANO1 surface expression is important for determining its physiological and pathophysiological functions. However, the trafficking mechanism of ANO1 remains elusive. Here, we report that segment a (N-terminal 116 amino acids) of ANO1 is crucial for its surface expression, and we identified 14-3-3γ as
