Role of ginsenosides, the main active components of Panax ginseng, in inflammatory responses and diseases
김지혜, 이영수, 김미연, 조재열

Panax ginseng is one of the most universally used herbal medicines in Asian and Western countries. Most of the biological activities of ginseng are derived from its main constituents, ginsenosides. Interestingly, a number of studies have reported that ginsenosides and their metabolites/derivativesdincluding ginsenoside (G)-Rb1, compound K, G-Rb2, G-Rd, G-Re, G-Rg1, G-Rg3, G-Rg5, G-Rh1, G-Rh2, and G-Rp1dexert anti-inflammatory activities in inflammatory responses by suppressing the production of

Taddessee Yayeh, Kun-Ho Jung, Hye Yoon Jeong, Ji-Hoon Park, Yong-Bum Song, Yi-Seong Kwak, Heun-Soo Kang, 조재열, 오재욱, Sang Keun Kim, 이만휘

Korean red ginseng has shown therapeutic effects for a number of disease conditions. However, little is known about the antiinflammatory effect of Korean red ginseng saponin fraction (RGSF) in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, in this study, we showed that RGSF containing 20(S)-protopanaxadiol type saponins inhibited nitric oxide production and attenuated the release of tumor necrotic factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, granulocyte monocyte colony stimulating factor (GMCSF), and macrophage chemoattr

Surfactin Blocks NO Production in Lipopolysaccharide-activated Macrophages by Inhibiting NF-κB Activation
변세은, 이용규, 김병헌, Ting Shen, 이상열, 박화진, 박승천, 이만희, 조재열

Surfactin is a natural biosurfactant derived from Bacillus subtilis and has various biological activities such as anticancer, antiplatelet, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, the inhibitory mechanism of surfactin in NO production from macrophages was examined. Surfactin downregulated LPSinduced NO production in RAW264.7 cells and primary macrophages with IC50 values of 31.6 and 22.4 μM, respectively. Immunoblotting analysis showed that surfactin strongly blocked the phosphorylation of

Background: Korean ginseng is an ethnopharmacologically valuable herbal plant with various biologicalproperties including anticancer, antiatherosclerosis, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Sincethere is currently no drug or therapeutic remedy derived from Korean ginseng, we developed a ginsenoside-enriched fraction (AP-SF) for prevention of various inflammatory symptoms. Methods: The anti-inflammatory efficacy of AP-SF was tested under in vitro inflammatory conditionsincluding nitr

Fisetin Suppresses Macrophage-Mediated Inflammatory Responses by Blockade of Src and Syk
김준호, 김미연, 김종훈, 조재열

Flavonoids, such as fisetin (3,7,3’,4’-tetrahydroxyflavone), are plant secondary metabolites. It has been reported that fisetin is able to perform numerous pharmacological roles including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer activities; however, the exact anti-inflammatory mechanism of fisetin is not understood. In this study, the pharmacological action modes of fisetin in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage-like cells were elucidated by using immunoblotting analysis, ki

20S-dihydroprotopanaxadiol, a ginsenoside derivative, boosts innate immune responses of monocytes and macrophages
김미연, 조재열

20S-dihydroprotopanaxadiol (2H-PPD) is a derivative of protopanaxadiol, a glycone of ginsenosides prepared from Panax ginseng. Although ginsenosides and acidic polysaccharides are known to be major active ingredients in ginseng, the immunopharmacological activities of their metabolites and derivatives have not been fully explored. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the regulatory action of 2H-PPD on the function of monocytes and macrophages in innate immune responses. 2H-PPD was able to boost

Structural Characteristics of Immunostimulating Polysaccharides from Lentinus edodes
이희환, 이종석, 조재열, 홍억기, 김영원

There is a significant amount of experimental evidence suggesting that polysaccharides from mushrooms enhance the host immune system by activating various mechanisms in immune cells, including macrophages. In this study, polysaccharides from Lentinus edodes were found to stimulate the functional activation of macrophages to secrete inflammatory mediators and cytokines and increase the phagocytotic uptake. The chemical properties of the stimulatory polysaccharides, CPFN-G-I, CPBN-G, and CPBA-G, w

20S-dihydroprotopanaxatriol modulates functional activation of monocytes and macrophages
김미연, 조재열

20S-dihydroprotopanaxatriol (2H-PPT) is a derivative of protopanaxatrol from ginseng. Unlike other components from Panax ginseng, the pharmacological activity of this compound has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the modulatory activity of 2H-PPT on the cellular responses of monocytes and macrophages to understand its immunoregulatory actions. 2H-PPT strongly upregulated the release of radicals in sodium nitroprusside-treated RAW264.7 cells and the surface levels of cost
