UTOPIAN: User-Driven Topic Modeling Based on Interactive Nonnegative Matrix Factorization
Jaegul Choo, Changhyun Lee, Chandan K. Reddy, Haesun Park
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics

Topic modeling has been widely used for analyzing text document collections. Recently, there have been significant advancements in various topic modeling techniques, particularly in the form of probabilistic graphical modeling. State-of-the-art techniques such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) have been successfully applied in visual text analytics. However, most of the widely-used methods based on probabilistic modeling have drawbacks in terms of consistency from multiple runs and empirical

Visual Analytics for Explainable Deep Learning
Jaegul Choo, Shi‐Xia Liu
SJR Q3IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications

Recently, deep learning has been advancing the state of the art in artificial intelligence to a new level, and humans rely on artificial intelligence techniques more than ever. However, even with such unprecedented advancements, the lack of explanation regarding the decisions made by deep learning models and absence of control over their internal processes act as major drawbacks in critical decision-making processes, such as precision medicine and law enforcement. In response, efforts are being

iVisClassifier: An interactive visual analytics system for classification based on supervised dimension reduction
Jaegul Choo, Han‐Seung Lee, Jaeyeon Kihm, Haesun Park

We present an interactive visual analytics system for classification, iVisClassifier, based on a supervised dimension reduction method, linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Given high-dimensional data and associated cluster labels, LDA gives their reduced dimensional representation, which provides a good overview about the cluster structure. Instead of a single two- or three-dimensional scatter plot, iVisClassifier fully interacts with all the reduced dimensions obtained by LDA through parallel c

Customizing Computational Methods for Visual Analytics with Big Data
Jaegul Choo, Haesun Park
SJR Q3IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications

The volume of available data has been growing exponentially, increasing data problem's complexity and obscurity. In response, visual analytics (VA) has gained attention, yet its solutions haven't scaled well for big data. Computational methods can improve VA's scalability by giving users compact, meaningful information about the input data. However, the significant computation time these methods require hinders real-time interactive visualization of big data. By addressing crucial discrepancies

Two-stage framework for visualization of clustered high dimensional data
Jaegul Choo, Shawn Bohn, Haesun Park

In this paper, we discuss dimension reduction methods for 2D visualization of high dimensional clustered data. We propose a two-stage framework for visualizing such data based on dimension reduction methods. In the first stage, we obtain the reduced dimensional data by applying a supervised dimension reduction method such as linear discriminant analysis which preserves the original cluster structure in terms of its criteria. The resulting optimal reduced dimension depends on the optimization cri

Missing Value Imputation of Time-Series Air-Quality Data via Deep Neural Networks
Tae-Sung Kim, Jin-Hee Kim, Wonho Yang, Hunjoo Lee, Jaegul Choo
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

To prevent severe air pollution, it is important to analyze time-series air quality data, but this is often challenging as the time-series data is usually partially missing, especially when it is collected from multiple locations simultaneously. To solve this problem, various deep-learning-based missing value imputation models have been proposed. However, often they are barely interpretable, which makes it difficult to analyze the imputed data. Thus, we propose a novel deep learning-based imputa

Jaegul Choo, Han‐Seung Lee, Zhicheng Liu, John Stasko, Haesun Park
Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Many of the modern data sets such as text and image data can be represented in high-dimensional vector spaces and have benefited from computational methods that utilize advanced computational methods. Visual analytics approaches have contributed greatly to data understanding and analysis due to their capability of leveraging humans’ ability for quick visual perception. However, visual analytics targeting large-scale data such as text and image data has been challenging due to the limited screen

Jaegul Choo, Changhyun Lee, Daniel Lee, Hongyuan Zha, Haesun Park

Non-profit Micro-finance organizations provide loaning opportunities to eradicate poverty by financially equipping impoverished, yet skilled entrepreneurs who are in desperate need of an institution that lends to those who have little. Kiva.org, a widely-used crowd-funded micro-financial service, provides researchers with an extensive amount of publicly available data containing a rich set of heterogeneous information regarding micro-financial transactions. Our objective in this paper is to iden

Heterogeneous Data Fusion via Space Alignment Using Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling
Jaegul Choo, Shawn Bohn, Grant Nakamura, Amanda M. White, Haesun Park

Heterogeneous data sets are typically represented in different feature spaces, making it difficult to analyze relationships spanning different data sets even when they are semantically related. Data fusion via space alignment can remedy this task by integrating multiple data sets lying in different spaces into one common space. Given a set of reference correspondence data that share the same semantic meaning across different spaces, space alignment attempts to place the corresponding reference d

We present VisIRR, an interactive visual information retrieval and recommendation system for large-scale document data. Starting with a query, VisIRR visualizes the retrieved documents in a scatter plot along with their topic summary. Next, based on interactive personalized preference feedback on the documents, VisIRR collects and visualizes potentially relevant documents out of the entire corpus so that an integrated analysis of both retrieved and recommended documents can be performed seamless

The application of explainable artificial intelligence in nanomaterial research has emerged in the past few years, which has facilitated the discovery of novel physical findings. However, a fundamental question arises concerning the physical insights presented by deep neural networks; the model interpretation results have not been carefully evaluated. Herein, explainable artificial intelligence and quantum mechanical calculations is bridged to investigate the correlation between light scattering
