Receptor mediated uptake of peptides that bind the human transferrin receptor
Jae Hoon Lee, Jeffrey A. Engler, James F. Collawn, Bryan A. Moore
European Journal of BiochemistryOA

A biopanning process designed to find peptide epitopes specific for cell surface receptors has been used in this study to select seven- and 12-amino-acid peptides capable of binding to and internalizing with the human transferrin receptor (hTfR). Through sequential rounds of negative and positive selection, two peptide sequences were identified that specifically bind to the hTfR. Phage containing the sequences HAIYPRH or THRPPMWSPVWP were inhibited from binding the hTfR in a dose-dependent fashi

SJR Q1ThoraxOA

Background We previously reported that microvesicles (MVs) released by human mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) were as effective as the cells themselves in both Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide and live bacteria-induced acute lung injury (ALI) mice models. However, it remained unclear whether the biological effect of MSC MV can be applied to human ALI. Methods In the current study, we tested the therapeutic effects of MSC MVs in a well-established ex vivo perfused human model of bacterial pneumoni

SJR Q1Stem Cells Translational MedicineOA

Our previous study demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) microvesicles (MV) reduced lung inflammation, protein permeability, and pulmonary edema in endotoxin-induced acute lung injury in mice. However, the underlying mechanisms for restoring lung protein permeability were not fully understood. In this current study, we hypothesized that MSC MV would restore protein permeability across injured human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVEC) in part through the transfer of angiopoietin

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a major cause of respiratory failure in critically ill patients. Despite extensive research into its pathophysiology, mortality remains high. No effective pharmacotherapy exists. Based largely on numerous preclinical animal studies, administration of mesenchymal stem or stromal cell (MSC) as a therapeutic for acute lung injury (ALI) holds great promise, and Phase I and II clinical trials are currently under way internationally. However, concern for the use

SJR Q1Arthroscopy The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related SurgeryOA

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of the beach-chair position and induced hypotension on regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO(2)) in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery by using near-infrared spectroscopy. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients scheduled for arthroscopic shoulder surgery were enrolled prospectively. After induction of anesthesia, mechanical ventilation was controlled to maintain Paco(2) at 35 to 40 mm Hg. Anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane and remifentanil.

LAPC patients who received chemotherapy and SBRT had favorable FFLP and OS with minimal treatment-related toxicity. The most common pattern of failure was distant metastasis, which warrants further studies on the optimal scheme of chemotherapy and SBRT.

Molecular and Biochemical Characterization of VR-EILs Encoding Mung Bean ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE3-LIKE Proteins

SJR Q1PLANT PHYSIOLOGYOA

ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE3 (EIN3) is a transcription factor involved in the ethylene signal transduction pathway in Arabidopsis. Two full-length cDNA clones, pVR-EIL1 and pVR-EIL2, encoding EIN3-LIKE proteins were isolated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and by screening the cDNA library of mung bean (Vigna radiata) hypocotyls. VR-EIL1 and VR-EIL2 share 70% identity and display varying degrees of sequence conservation (39%-65%) with previously isolated EIN3 homologs from Arabidopsi

Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) Cells May Express Six β4-Galactosyltransferases (β4GalTs)

SJR Q1Journal of Biological ChemistryOA

Six beta4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) genes have been cloned from mammalian sources. We show that all six genes are expressed in the Gat(-)2 line of Chinese hamster ovary cells (Gat(-)2 CHO). Two independent mutants termed Pro(-)5Lec20 and Gat(-)2Lec20, previously selected for lectin resistance, were found to have a galactosylation defect. Radiolabeled biantennary N-glycans synthesized by Pro(-)5Lec20 were proportionately less ricin-bound than similar species from parental CHO cells, and L

OBJECTIVES: Glucose homeostasis changes after pancreatic resection are not well understood. We aimed to identify the incidence of, and risk factors for, a change in glucose homeostasis in patients who underwent pancreatectomy for benign pancreatic tumors. METHODS: Clinical and pathological data from 229 patients were collected prospectively and analyzed retrospectively. The pancreas resection volume was calculated by computed tomography volumetry. RESULTS: After pancreatectomy, newly diagnosed d

A ruptured pseudoaneurysm is the most serious and life-threatening cause of postpancreatoduodenectomy (PD) hemorrhages. We have evaluated the clinical course and management of pseudoaneurysms after PD. Of 586 patients who underwent PD for periampullary tumors in Asan Medical Center between March 2003 and March 2011, 27 experienced pseudoaneurysmal bleeding. Bleeding developed at a median of 21 days (range, 8 to 45 days) after surgery, including 9 patients who developed bleeding more than 4 weeks
