15PURPOSE: To report the clinical findings and surgical outcomes of lamellar macular holes (LMHs) with and without lamellar hole-associated epiretinal proliferation (LHEP). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 73 eyes of 73 patients who underwent vitrectomy for LMH. Patients were grouped according to the presence of LHEP on preoperative spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and OCT features were compared between LMH pat
An ocular prosthesis is a custom-made polymeric insert that can be placed in an anophthalmic socket for cosmetic rehabilitation of patients who have lost their eyes. The process of creating such a custom-made ocular prosthesis is time-consuming and labor-intensive because it involves artistic work that is carried out manually. This paper proposes a novel semi-automated method for fabricating customized ocular prostheses using three-dimensional (3D) printing and sublimation transfer printing. In
Purpose: To investigate the effect of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) on fibrosis in orbital fibroblasts in Graves' orbitopathy (GO). Methods: Orbital fibroblasts were cultured from orbital adipose/connective tissues of patients with GO and healthy control subjects. Effects of treatment with TGF-β and cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on S1P receptor (S1PR) messenger RNA (mRNA) and S1P expression were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. To evaluate the role of S1P in
Central retinal vein occlusion showing p-MLM on optical coherence tomography had worse visual outcome with higher incidence of being classified into ischemic type CRVO.
Idelalisib inhibited proinflammatory cytokine production and adipogenesis in GO orbital fibroblasts in vitro. These results support the potential use of PI3K inhibitors in GO management.
Oxidative stress and adipogenesis play key roles in the pathogenesis of Graves' orbitopathy (GO). In this study, the therapeutic effects of caffeine on the reduction of oxidative stress and adipogenesis were evaluated in primary cultured GO orbital fibroblasts in vitro. Orbital fibroblasts were cultured from orbital connective tissues obtained from individuals with GO. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels induced by hydrogen peroxide or cigarette smoke extract and the expression of
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ocular hypertension (OHT) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO) and to investigate the associations between clinical features of the disease and the prevalence of OHT and OAG. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among a total of 1128 patients with GO. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed, including intraocular pressure, optic disc photography, visual field testin
We examined endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related gene expression in orbital tissues from patients with Graves' orbitopathy (GO) and the effects of silencing protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) in primary orbital fibroblast cultures to demonstrate the therapeutic potential of PERK-modulating agents in GO management. The expression of ER stress-related genes in orbital tissue harvested from individuals with or without GO was studied using real-time PCR. The role of PER
Background: In Graves' orbitopathy (GO), localized orbital inflammation within the fixed orbit often leads to a fibrotic phenotype resulting in restrictive myopathy or refractory proptosis. However, the molecular pathways related to the transition from inflammation to fibrosis in GO are less understood. Yes-associated protein (YAP) and its homolog, transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ; a Hippo pathway effector), are critical mechanosensors of mechanical stimuli and activate si
OBJECTIVES: The clinical course of thyroid eye disease (TED) is heterogeneous and predicting patients who may develop the severe sequelae of the disease is difficult. In this study, we evaluated the longitudinal association between changes in serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor antibody (TRAb) levels and course of disease activity and severity over time. DESIGN: This was a multicentre, prospective, observational study. SETTING: Fifteen tertiary care oculoplastic service centres in K
This case presents the first case of M intracellulare keratitis after LASIK. LASIK surgeons should aware that post-LASIK keratitis can develop long after the operation and careful suspicion of infectious disease with meticulous diagnostic test is needed.
Inflammation and adipogenesis represent the main pathogenic mechanisms of Graves' orbitopathy (GO), and oxidative stress is a well-known inducer of GO pathology. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been suggested as a major contributor to inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In this study, we investigated the role of the ER-stress chaperone protein, binding immunoglobulin protein (BiP), in GO pathogenesis. Using primary cultures of orbital fibroblasts from patients with G
