15BACKGROUND: The proportion of never-smokers with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is increasing, but that in Korea has not been well addressed in a large population. We aimed to evaluate the proportion and clinical features of never-smokers with NSCLC in a large single institution. METHODS: We analyzed clinical data of 1860 consecutive patients who were newly diagnosed with NSCLC between June 2011 and December 2014. RESULTS: Of the 1860 NSCLC patients, 707 (38.0%) were never-smokers. The propo
BACKGROUND: Percutaneous needle aspiration or biopsy (PCNA or PCNB) is an established diagnostic technique that has a high diagnostic yield. However, its role in the diagnosis of nodular ground-glass opacities (nGGOs) is controversial, and the necessity of preoperative histologic confirmation by PCNA or PCNB in nGGOs has not been well addressed. METHODS: We here evaluated the rates of malignancy and surgery-related complications, and the cost benefits of resecting nGGOs without prior tissue diag
Major bleeding occurred in 12.2% of critically ill cirrhotic patients admitted to the MICU. A low platelet count at MICU admission and sepsis were associated with an increased risk of major bleeding during the MICU stay. Further study is needed to better understand hemostasis in critically ill patients with LC.
Abstract The objective was to evaluate the prevalence of patients at a high risk of having OSA by using a screening questionnaire and to investigate whether the questionnaire can predict patients who are at risk of cardiopulmonary events occurring during a bronchoscopy under sedation. We prospectively enrolled consecutive adult patients who underwent flexible bronchoscopies under moderate sedation. The snoring, tiredness, observed apnea, high blood pressure-body mass index, age, neck circumferen
Current knowledge regarding the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the risk of lung cancer is limited. This study aimed to evaluate associations between OSA and the incidence of lung cancer based on the Korean National Health Information Database. The study outcome was the incidence of newly diagnosed lung cancer, and a Cox proportional hazards model was used for analysis. A total of 181,070 adult patients newly diagnosed with OSA between 2011 and 2018 were matched with those
Background The prevalence of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) is increasing in South Korea and many parts of the world. However, the genetic factors underlying susceptibility to this disease remain elusive. Methods To identify genetic variants in patients with NTM-PD, we performed a genome-wide association study with 403 Korean patients with NTM-PD and 306 healthy controls from the Healthy Twin Study, Korea cohort. Candidate variants from the discovery cohort were subsequ
The presence of EGFR mutations is significantly associated with early stage disease at initial diagnosis in lung adenocarcinomas after adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, and screening. This finding implies that EGFR mutations may play a role as a positive prognostic marker.
BACKGRUOUND: To identify a screening tool for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and evaluate the effects of endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery on improving OSA in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled adults with acromegaly scheduled for endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery. All measurements were conducted when participants were admitted for a baseline work-up for acromegaly before surgery and surveillance approximately 3 to 6 months after surgery. Respiratory event index (REI)
Two-thirds of patients undergoing bronchoscopy with moderate sedation were at risk of OSA based on the screening questionnaire. Snoring during bronchoscopy was highly predictive of patients at high risk of OSA.
We enrolled patients with confirmed sputum eosinophilia who had visited our tertiary referral hospital between 2012 and 2015. We evaluated the incidence and predictors of exacerbations in patients with nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (NAEB), and investigated predictors of improvement in eosinophilic inflammation in chronic airway diseases with or without persistent airflow limitation. In total, 398 patients with sputum eosinophilia were enrolled. Of these, 152 (38.2%) had NAEB. The incidenc
