Obesity, Insulin Resistance and Cancer Risk
Sun Ha Jee, Hee Jin Kim, Jakyoung Lee
SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Obesity is a known cause of metabolic syndrome which includes Type II diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. It is well documented that insulin resistance contributes to the mortality and the incidence of metabolic syndromes including central obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension. Both obesity and diabetes are emerging topics for researchers to consider as having a possible causal association with cancer since the two factors have been viewed as risk factors for cancer. The pr

Herein, we present an unconventional method for multimodal characterization of three-dimensional cardiac organoids. This method can monitor and control the mechanophysiological parameters of organoids within a single device. In this method, local pressure distributions of human-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived cardiac organoids are visualized spatiotemporally by an active-matrix array of pressure-sensitive transistors. This array is integrated with three-dimensional electrodes formed by the

SJR Q1Interdisciplinary medicineOA

Abstract Electrical stimulation as a therapeutic approach is widely applicable in terms of target tissues or target effects. This method can be an alternative to conventional therapies for patients who are resistant to drugs or are ineligible for surgical operations. In addition, as researchers have actively studied how to adjust the parameters for electrical stimulation in order to improve effectiveness, many patients have already received treatments with electrical stimulation. With respect to

Abstract The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is a fascinatingly complex and crucial component of the human body, responsible for transmitting vital signals throughout the body's intricate network of nerves. Its efficient functioning is paramount to our health, with any dysfunction often resulting in serious medical conditions, including motor disorders, neurological diseases, and psychiatric disorders. Recent strides in science and technology have made neuromodulation of the PNS a promising aven

SJR Q1Advanced Functional MaterialsOA

Abstract The utilization of gallium (Ga)‐based liquid metals (LMs) as functional materials in bioelectronics has been extensively explored over the past decade as a key to stimulation of biological systems and recording of biological signals. The motivation behind this class of electronics is driven by the opportunities to exploit mechanical properties similar to biological tissues. These bioelectronic devices are required to maintain functionality under deformation and, especially for implantab

SJR Q1Advanced NanoBiomed ResearchOA

Organoids refer to 3D stem cells that have been developed to model neurological disorders in vitro. Typically, brain and heart organoids have gained interest for their potential to truly mimic the functional ability of real organs. Morphological analysis methods using immunostaining and slicing of the organoids are explored extensively over the past decade to evaluate the structures and functions of organoids. However, the destructiveness of these methods limits real‐time monitoring of the dynam

SJR Q1Science AdvancesOA

Glaucoma causes irreversible vision loss due to optic nerve damage and retinal cell degeneration. Since high intraocular pressure (IOP) is a major risk factor for glaucoma development, accurate IOP measurement is crucial, especially intravitreal IOP affecting the optical nerve and cells. However, conventional methods have limits in selectively and directly detecting local retina pressure. Here, we present continuous measurements of local IOP values in the anterior chamber and vitreous chamber of

Stimulating large volumes of neural networks using macroelectrodes can modulate disorder-associated brain circuits effectively. However, conventional solid-metal electrodes often cause unwanted brain damage due to their high mechanical stiffness. In contrast, low-modulus liquid metals provide tissue-like stiffness while maintaining macroscale electrode dimensions. Here, we present implantable soft macroelectrodes made from biocompatible liquid metals for brain stimulation. These probes can be ea

Cardiovascular disease is a major public health issue, and smart diagnostic approaches play an important role in the analysis of electrocardiograms. Here, we present three-dimensional, soft electrodes of liquid metals that can be conformably attached to the surfaces of the heart and skin for long-term cardiac analysis. The fine micropillar structures of biocompatible liquid metals enable precise targeting to small tissue areas, allowing for spatiotemporal mapping and modulation of cardiac electr
