15Although prior research in Western societies has revealed an association between self-efficacy and both self-management behaviours and better health status, little is known about the applicability of this association in Korean populations. We examined the differences in self-management behaviours and health status among three groups according to the level of self-efficacy (high, moderate and low). We used a descriptive and correlational design, and administrated a questionnaire to 322 Korean pat
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of insufficient light exposure on the polymerization of conventional and self-adhesive dual-cure resin cements under ceramic restorations. METHODS: Two conventional dual-cure resin cements (Rely-X ARC, Duolink) and two self-adhesive resin cements (Rely-X U200, Maxcem Elite) were polymerized under different curing modes (dual-cure or self-cure), curing times (20 and 120 seconds), and thickness of a ceramic overlay (2 and 4 mm)
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasing in parallel with the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle modification is a crucial strategy for the treatment of NAFLD, which can lead to a reduction in liver fat with concomitant weight loss. The use of eHealth technologies is an effective approach to improve health outcomes in patients as they do not have any time and space limitations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate published eHealt
BACKGROUND: A cancer diagnosis is a life-threatening event, but studies on psychological distress in patients with cancer after diagnosis are relatively limited, particularly those in early-stage cancer. OBJECTIVES: On the basis of Leventhal's common-sense model of self-regulation, this study examined the mediating effects of illness perception on psychological distress and identified the factors influencing illness perception in patients with newly diagnosed gastric cancer. METHODS: A cross-sec
Self-management programs based on social cognitive theory are useful to improve health care outcomes for patients with chronic diseases in Western culture. The purpose of this review is to identify and synthesize published research on the theory to enhance self-efficacy in disease management and examine its applicability to Korean culture regarding the learning strategies used. Ultimately, it was to identify the optimal use of these learning strategies to improve the self-efficacy of Korean pati
BACKGROUND: Self-care behaviours are important to improve health outcomes in patients with heart failure. However, little is known about the factors related to the subdimensions of self-care behaviours in these patients. AIMS: To identify the factors associated with the subdimensions of self-care behaviours among South Korean patients with heart failure. METHODS: The participants in this cross-sectional descriptive study conducted between October 2016 and January 2017 were 178 patients with hear
Fatigue is one of the most common patient-reported symptoms and can result in poor quality of life in patients with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Little is known about the characteristics of fatigue in Korean patients with HBV. This study's purpose was to examine fatigue severity and explore health issues associated with fatigue in Korean patients with HBV. A mixed-methods research design was used. Quantitative data on fatigue severity were measured using the revised Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS) wit
BACKGROUND: Lifestyle modification in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is key to improving health outcomes. Mobile health technologies may offer potential effective and efficient health care support to facilitate self-management. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a lifestyle coaching intervention using a mobile app for patients with NAFLD and evaluate physiological and psychological health outcomes for 6 months. METHODS: This study was a randomized controlled trial. The
AIM: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of self-management in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). DESIGN: The study employed an exploratory descriptive qualitative study using focus group interviews. METHODS: Twelve participants with NAFLD were recruited from a university hospital in South Korea. The date of data collection was from November-December 2018, and the data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three themes and seven
Abstract Fatigue is a major symptom among patients with Hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, the physiological mechanisms regarding mediate fatigue and the relationships between fatigue, cortisol and cytokines are unclear in patients with HBV. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between perceived fatigue, cortisol, and cytokines in Korean patients with HBV. The mean score for overall fatigue was moderate. In linear regression analyses, TNF-α was only significant as a predicto
Uncertainty and unmet care needs constantly change in patients with cancer. However, there is a lack of information regarding the changing pattern of these variables. This study aimed to examine the changes in uncertainty and unmet care needs at diagnosis and after surgery among patients with gastric cancer. In total, 86 individuals completed a self-reported questionnaire. Data were collected twice - to measure uncertainty and unmet care needs at cancer diagnosis (T1), and after surgery (T2) - a
The results of the study revealed that the 22-item Korean version of the revised PFS is valid and reliable in Koreans with chronic hepatitis B. Further studies ascertaining the psychometric properties of the revised PFS need to be performed in Korean patients.
Systematic collaboration between healthcare providers and urologic specialists, enhancing staff competence, and patient-tailored intervention should be recommended to improve quality of care for patients with urologic issues in long-term care hospitals.
PURPOSE: To compare the differences of self-care behaviors between Korean Americans with heart failure (HF) and Caucasian Americans with HF. METHOD: Ninety (N = 90) participants (45 Korean Americans and 45 Caucasian Americans) were recruited for this study. A two-group, comparative, descriptive design using the Revised Heart Failure Self-Care Behavior Scale was used to assess self-care behaviors. RESULTS: Self-care behavior was not significantly different between the two groups (p > .05). Howeve
This study analyzed the risk factors for heel pressure injury in cardiovascular intensive care unit patients with the aim of laying the groundwork for preventive nursing interventions. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of 92 patients who were admitted to the cardiovascular surgical or medical intensive care unit of a university hospital in South Korea between January and December 2017. Of these patients, 31 and 61 were included to the heel pressure injury group and the non-heel pre
