15PURPOSE: To identify epigenetic molecular makers in plasma for the early detection of colorectal cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed the methylation status of 10 genes in fresh-frozen tissues and corresponding plasma samples from 243 patients with stage I and II sporadic colorectal cancer, 276 healthy individuals, and plasma from 64 colorectal adenoma patients using methylation-specific PCR. The methylation score (Mscore) was used to find molecular markers with high sensitiv
BACKGROUND: Anastomosis leakage is a major complication of rectal surgery. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for anastomotic leakage after low anterior resection (LAR) in rectal cancer patients and study its impact on long-term prognosis and disease-free survival and overall survival in rectal cancer patients. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent rectal resection with primary anastomosis below the pelvic peritoneal reflexion for rectal cancer between October 1996 to Febru
In recent years, natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) in the treatment of colorectal cancer has attracted widespread attention. The potential benefits of NOSES including reduction in postoperative pain and wound complications, less use of postoperative analgesic, faster recovery of bowel function, shorter length of hospital stay, better cosmetic and psychological effect have been described in colorectal surgery. Despite significant decrease in surgical trauma of NOSES have been ob
Despite of higher local recurrence rate, RFA may be considered as a therapeutic option for patients who are considered unsuitable for conventional surgical treatment. Randomized prospective controlled trials comparing the therapeutic outcome of RFA and HR are definitely warranted.
BACKGROUND: The most reliable prognostic factor in colon cancer is the TNM classification. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the prognostic role of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in stage II colon cancer. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the density of TILs that were positive for cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3) (T-cell coreceptor), CD45 isoform RO (CD45RO) (protein tyrosine phosphatase), nuclear transcription factor forkhead box P3 (FOXP3), and CD25
The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 3-T MRI were similar to those of endorectal sonography for muscularis propria invasion and lymph node involvement, but for perirectal tissue invasion, 3-T MRI was less accurate than endorectal sonography.
BACKGROUND: Performing a restaging work-up with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG PET/CT) can provide information about the effects that are related to preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the accuracy of MRI and (18)F-FDG PET/CT for restaging after preoperative CCRT for rectal cancer. METHODS: Between April 2005 and February 2006, 30 patients w
Previously, we reported that overexpression of Opa (Neisseria gonorrhoeae opacity-associated)-interacting protein 5 (OIP5) caused multi-septa formation and growth defects, both of which are considered cancer-related phenotypes. To evaluate OIP5 as a possible cancer therapeutic target, we examined its expression level in 66 colorectal cancer patients. OIP5 was upregulated about 3.7-fold in tumors and over 2-fold in 58 out of 66 colorectal cancer patients. Knockdown of OIP5 expression by small int
BACKGROUND: Metabolic acidosis is frequently observed in perioperative patients, especially those who undergo major surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors related to post-operative metabolic acidosis and to attempt to identify the clinical effect of metabolic acidosis following major abdominal surgery. METHODS: We included 172 patients admitted to a surgical intensive care unit (ICU) following major abdominal surgery. All cases were divided into either the acidosis or the nor
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alterations in the normal control of apoptosis and cell proliferation are important factors in multistep colorectal carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of apoptosis and cell proliferation in rectal cancers and to examine their relationship to clinicopathological variables and expression of bcl-2 and p53. METHODS: Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining and immunohistochemical staining
