15Acute kidney injury (AKI) after pediatric cardiac surgery is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Modifiable risk factors for postoperative AKI including perioperative anesthesia-related parameters were assessed. The authors conducted a single-center, retrospective cohort study of 220 patients (aged 10 days to 19 years) who underwent congenital cardiac surgery between January and December 2012. The incidence of AKI within 7 days postoperatively was determined using the Kidney Disease: I
BACKGROUND: The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is an instrument that is commonly used to screen for depression in patients with chronic disease, but the characteristics of the CES-D in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) have not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the criterion validities and the predictive powers of the CES-D for depression and anxiety disorders in adults with CHD. METHODS: Two hundred patients were screened with the C
OBJECTIVE: Tricuspid valve replacement (TVR) has a high postoperative mortality, despite recent advances in perioperative care. We report the results of our experience in TVR with an emphasis on early mortality and morbidity and long-term follow-up. METHODS: Between October 1994 and August 2007, 80 consecutive TVRs were performed in 78 patients. The mean age was 48+/-14 (range: 20-70) years. The underlying disease of the patients was classified as rheumatic (n=54), congenital (n=12), endocarditi
OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to analyze the MDCT and MRI findings in patients with unroofed coronary sinus syndrome.
OBJECTIVES: Treatment of long-segment congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS) remains challenging. Recently, slide tracheoplasty has become the standard approach in many centres. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of slide tracheoplasty. METHODS: Between 2004 and 2011, 18 patients underwent slide tracheoplasty in our centre. The median patient age was 2.5 months (range, 18 days-4 years) and the median body weight was 4.2 (range, 2.2-17.7) kg at operation. Eleven (61%) patient
BACKGROUND: Fragmented QRS complex (fQRS) on 12-lead ECG, a marker of myocardial scar, is a predictor of arrhythmic events in patients with ischemic and nonischemic cardiomyopathy. We investigated whether the presence of fQRS is associated with the severity of the anomaly and with increased arrhythmic events in adult patients with Ebstein anomaly (EA). METHODS AND RESULTS: In 51 consecutive adult patients with EA (median age, 37 years; 18 males), the severity index of EA calculated from echocard
BACKGROUND: We reviewed our 20-year experience with arterial switch operation (ASO) for transposition of the great arteries (TGA) or double outlet right ventricle with subpulmonary ventricular septal defect (Taussig-Bing anomaly) to assess the early and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Between January 1995 and December 2014, 139 consecutive patients who underwent ASO for TGA or Taussig-Bing anomaly were included in this retrospective study. The median age at the operation was 9 (0-485) days, and 97
Chylothorax is a rare but serious postoperative condition with a high rate of morbidity that may lead to death of children with congenital heart disease. Here we reviewed nine consecutive cases with chylothorax in infants and children following cardiac surgery from March 2002 to February 2003. Somatostatin was added to conservative treatment protocol to increase effectiveness of therapy in all cases. The duration of somatostatin therapy varied from 7 to 32 days. All cases of chylothorax were suc
The aim of the study was to review our experience with atrial septal defect (ASD) closure with a fenestrated patch in patients with severe pulmonary hypertension. Between July 2004 and February 2009, 16 patients with isolated ASD underwent closure with a fenestrated patch. All patients had a secundum type ASD and severe pulmonary hypertension. Patients ranged in age from 6 to 57 years (mean ± SD, 34.9 ± 13.5 years). The follow-up period was 9 to 59 months (mean, 34.5 ± 13.1 months). The ranges o
OBJECTIVES: To maintain pulmonary valvar function subsequent to repair of tetralogy of Fallot, we have inserted a homograft monocusp when a transjunctional patch was required. In this study, we have evaluated the mid- to long-term outcomes, aiming to determine the durability of the homograft. METHODS: Among 218 repairs performed for tetralogy of Fallot between July, 1996, and June, 2005, we inserted homograft monocusps in 54 patients, 4 of whom had associated absent pulmonary valve syndrome, 3 h
