15The increasing prevalence of nanoplastics in our environment due to the widespread use of plastics poses potential health risks that are not yet fully understood. This study examines the physiological and neurotoxic effects of these minuscule nanoplastic particles on the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as well as on human cells. Here, we find that 25 nm polystyrene nanoplastic particles can inhibit animal growth and movement at very low concentrations, with varying effects on their surface group
Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor, but the pathogenesis is not well understood. While cyclooxygeanse-2 (COX-2) is known to be closely associated with tumor growth and metastasis in several kinds of human tumors, the function of COX-2 in osteosarcoma is unclear. Therefore, to investigate the function of COX-2 in osteosarcoma, we established stable cell lines overexpressing COX-2 in U2OS human osteosarcoma cells. COX-2 overexpression as well as prostaglandin E2 treatment promoted
BACKGROUND: The role of (18) F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18) F-FDG PET/CT) in evaluating pulmonary artery lesions has not yet been established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of (18) F-FDG PET/CT imaging in differentiating malignant from benign pulmonary artery (PA) lesions. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 18 subjects with 26 low-attenuated filling defects suspicious for PA malignancy on contrast-enhanced chest CT were en
Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) have been known for their similar or superior properties to DNA or RNA since 1991, but not regarded as a separate class of aptamers. We report here an interesting additional property of PNAs revealed by graphene oxide (GO)-based assays, suggesting that nucleobases in certain aptamers play more important roles in strong and selective binding to the target molecules.
It has been suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the initiation and development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. We examined the association between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number and microalbuminuria in a cross-sectional community-based study. We measured peripheral blood mtDNA copy number in 694 adults without chronic kidney disease by a real-time PCR method. The overall prevalence of microalbuminuria (defined as an albumin creatinine ratio of 30 to 299
AIM: We investigated the prognostic value of clinicopathological factors in patients with a distal bile duct adenocarcinoma after curative resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 25 patients who underwent (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) before surgery. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were measured using FDG-PET/CT. FDG-PET/CT parameters
The incidence of femoral head AVN was low among a prospective cohort of renal transplantation recipients at the time of 1 year after engraftment. Planar bone scintigraphy is sufficient to diagnose AVN in symptomatic patients at risk for femoral head AVN using grade I and II activities as positive criteria.
PPI measured from dynamic HBS offers a highly accurate method for identifying post-LT rejection and distinguishing it from biliary obstruction or hepatitis.
