15BACKGROUND: A thorough characterization of the morphological structure and physical properties is essential for an understanding of human hair. A number of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and confocal microscopy have been used to study hair surfaces. Recently, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has emerged as an ideal method for the non-invasive examination of hair surfaces. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of aging on normal Korean hair diameter a
The hypothalamic neuropeptide CRH has been postulated to inhibit LH secretion by a central action within the brain. To characterize the physiological significance of CRH in stressor-induced inhibition of LH secretion, CRH-deficient and wild-type mice were subjected to restraint or food withdrawal, and plasma LH levels were determined. The proestrus LH surge of female mice was equally suppressed by restraint in both genotypes, and central administration of a CRH antagonist did not alleviate this
Primary osteoma cutis is characterized by the formation of normal bone tissue in the dermis or subcutis without any underlying tissue abnormality or pre-existing calcification. This illness is associated with Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO), which is characterized by such physical features as a short stature, round face, obesity, brachydactyly and osteoma cutis. Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is an inherited metabolic disorder that's characterized by resistance to parathyroid hormone, a
BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a pigmentary skin disorder characterized by a chronic and progressive loss of melanocytes. Although the aetiology of vitiligo is currently unknown, several theories have been proposed to explain the pathogenesis of this disease, including autoimmune, neural, self-destruction, oxidative stress, and genetic theories. Thioredoxin domain containing 5 (TXNDC5) is a newly identified member of the thioredoxin family. TXNDC5 has a protein disulphide isomerase-like domain which pl
Non-segmental vitiligo (NSV) is the most common type of vitiligo, which is characterized by chronic and progressive loss of melanocytes. Genetic factors have been shown to play a key role in NSV in association and family studies. Granzyme B is a serine protease found in the cytoplasmic granules of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells that play an important role in inducing apoptotic changes of target cells. Several recent studies have provided evidence that polymorphism in the GZMB g
Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a cutaneous marker for many underlying states such as endocrine abnormality, obesity, certain drugs, and malignancy. Generalized AN is a rare condition and is commonly seen in adults with an underlying malignancy. The type B insulin resistance syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder, is caused by the autoantibodies to the insulin receptor. Patients typically present with hyperglycemia but also may present with hypoglycemia. We report a rare case of a 36-year-old man wit
Factitial panniculitis can be produced by mechanical, physical, or chemical means. It often causes an unusual clinical and histological feature that defies diagnosis until self-inoculation or mechanical trauma is suspected and proved. Acupuncture has been used in East Asia for centuries as a method of treatment for various conditions, especially for pain relief, and is known to be a relatively safe system. The needles are often manipulated by hand once they are placed at the acupuncture points.
T-cell prolymphocytic leukaemia (T-PLL) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm of mature T lymphocytes. The small cell variant occurs in approximately 20% of T-PLL patients. The skin findings of leukaemia consist of leukaemia-specific skin lesions, which are infiltrated by leukaemia cells, and non-specific lesions. The former type of lesion signifies leukaemia cutis. Leukaemia cutis presents clinically as tumours, nodules, or patches on the scalp, face and trunk. We report here an 82-year-old Korean mal
Various hyaluronic acid fillers can be used for facial attenuation and rejuvenation. The efficacy and durability of hyaluronic acid fillers are of major concern to dermatologists and patients. This study aimed to evaluate three-dimensional morphology, tissue distribution, and changes in volume after injection of two different hyaluronic acid fillers. Ten Korean women were enrolled in this study. Each subject was injected with monophasic hyaluronic acid filler in one malar area and biphasic fille
Eccrine poromas are benign, slow-growing, solitary tumors originating from the intraepidermal portion of eccrine sweat ducts. Approximately 65% of these tumors occur on the soles of the feet, while 10% occur on the hands where a high concentration of eccrine sweat glands exists. Less frequently it occurs in other sites such as neck, chest, forehead, nose, and scalp with sporadic occurrences. A 43-year-old Korean female presented with a mass on her right auricle, which had been present for 5 year
