SJR Q1Journal of the American Heart AssociationOA

BACKGROUND: The association between the location and the mechanism of a stroke lesion remains unclear. A diffusion-weighted imaging study may help resolve this lack of clarity. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied a consecutive series of 2702 acute ischemic stroke patients whose stroke lesions were confirmed by diffusion-weighted imaging and who underwent a thorough etiological investigation. The vascular territory in which an ischemic lesion was situated was identified using standard anatomic maps o

ObjectiveTo test whether autologous modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) improve recovery in patients with chronic major stroke. MethodsIn this prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial with blinded outcome evaluation, patients with severe middle cerebral artery territory infarct within 90 days of symptom onset were assigned, in a 2:1 ratio, to receive preconditioned autologous MSC injections (MSC group) or standard treatment alone (control group). The primary outcome was the score

SJR Q1Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & PsychiatryOA

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial atherosclerosis is a major cause of ischaemic stroke worldwide. A number of studies have shown the effects of statin treatment on coronary and carotid artery plaques, but there is little evidence on the effects of statin treatment on intracranial atherosclerotic plaques. METHODS: The Intensive Statin Treatment in Acute Ischaemic Stroke Patients with Intracranial Atherosclerosis - High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (STAMINA-MRI) Trial is a single-arm, prospective,

Branch Atheromatous Plaque: A Major Cause of Lacunar Infarction (High-Resolution MRI Study)
Jong‐Won Chung, Beom Joon Kim, Chul Ho Sohn, Byung‐Woo Yoon, Seung‐Hoon Lee
SJR Q2Cerebrovascular Diseases ExtraOA

BACKGROUND: Lacunar infarctions account for up to 25% of all ischemic strokes and, thus, constitute a numerically important subgroup. It is important that the two pathogeneses of lacunar infarction, that is, small-vessel occlusion and branch atheromatous disease, be differentiated because prognoses and treatment strategies differ. The authors evaluated the presence of branch atheromatous plaque in parent arteries that supply lacunar infarcts by high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI)

SJR Q1Stroke

Background and Purpose— The aim of the study was to assessed the impact of short-term exposure to air pollution on ischemic stroke subtype, while focusing on stroke caused via cardioembolism. Methods— From a nationwide, multicenter, prospective, stroke registry database, 13 535 patients with acute ischemic stroke hospitalized to 12 participating centers were enrolled in this study. Data on the hourly concentrations of particulate matter <10 μm, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 )

Previous Statin Use and High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging Characteristics of Intracranial Atherosclerotic Plaque
Jong‐Won Chung, Jaechun Hwang, Mi Ji Lee, Jihoon Cha, Oh Young Bang
SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although statin use has been linked to the stabilization of systemic atherosclerosis, its effect on symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic plaques has yet to be explored. We hypothesized that premorbid statin use is associated with plaque instability in intracranial arteries and may lead to differential patterns (size and distribution) of ischemic lesions in patients with acute intracranial atherosclerotic stroke. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-six patients with acute

SJR Q1StrokeOA

Background and Purpose- Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a unique cerebrovascular occlusive disease characterized by progressive stenosis and negative remodeling of the distal internal carotid artery (ICA). We hypothesized that cav-1 (caveolin-1)-a protein that controls the regulation of endothelial vesicular trafficking and signal transduction-is associated with negative remodeling in MMD. Methods- We prospectively recruited 77 consecutive patients with MMD diagnosed via conventional angiography. Seve

SJR Q1StrokeOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Coagulopathy is an important cause of stroke in cancer patients. However, underlying mechanisms and clinical factors related to coagulopathy remain unclear. We hypothesized that certain characteristics of cancer affect coagulopathy in patients with lung cancer and ischemic stroke. METHODS: Consecutive patients with active lung cancer and acute ischemic stroke were prospectively studied. Volume and pattern of acute brain infarcts and plasma levels of circulating tumor extr

This study suggests that elevated risks of recurrent stroke are associated with having relatives with early-onset stroke and siblings with stroke histories, implying that additional precautions may be needed in such populations.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the differential roles of endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in intracranial atherosclerotic stroke (ICAS). METHODS: We prospectively recruited 262 patients with acute cerebral infarcts caused by ICAS and 75 individuals with no history of stroke as controls. Markers of endothelial dysfunction (asymmetric dimethylarginine, ADMA) and inflammation (lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2, Lp-PLA2) were measured. Acute ischemic lesions were

SJR Q2Cerebrovascular Diseases

BACKGROUND: Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) given within 4.5 h of symptom onset is accepted as the standard treatment of ischemic stroke. Persistent occlusion of cerebral arteries despite intravenous thrombolysis and unremitting neurologic deficits lead us to consider additional intra-arterial approaches. The aim of this study was to elucidate the potential of fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI performed during or immediately after intravenous thrombolysis for predict
