Comparing the environmental impacts of building materials at the building level can be biased because a building design is optimized for a primary structural material. To achieve objective comparisons, this study compares the environmental impact of reinforced concrete (RC), cross-laminated timber (CLT), and timber-concrete composite (TCC) at the component level with equivalent structural performance. A slab was selected as the target structure member because its design does not consider lateral

In this study, the bending performance of a separable cross-laminated timber (CLT)–concrete composite slab for reducing environmental impact was investigated. The slab has consisted of CLT and eco–concrete, and round-notch shape shear connectors resist the shear force between the CLT and eco-concrete. The eco–concrete was composed of a high-sulfated calcium silicate (HSCS) cement, which ensures low energy consumption in the production process. The bending stiffness and load-carrying capacities o

SJR Q1Journal of Wood ScienceOA

Abstract The aim of this study was to predict the withdrawal resistance of a screw in hybrid cross-laminated timber (CLT) composed of two types of lamina layers. A theoretical model to predict the withdrawal resistance was developed from the shear mechanism between a screw and the layers in hybrid CLT. The parameters for the developed model were the withdrawal stiffness and strength that occurs when a screw is withdrawn, and the penetration depth of a screw in layers of a wood material. The pred

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the moment and shear capacity of Ply-lam which is composed with plywood and structural timber. The moment and shear capacity of Ply-lam were predicted by using prediction methodologies for typical cross-laminated timber (CLT). The predicted values by the methodologies were verified by comparison with measured capacities. Fifty-eight specimens of Ply-lam (five layers) were manufactured and half of the specimens were tested for bending (span-to-dep

Use of Adjacent Knot Data in Predicting Bending Strength of Dimension Lumber by X-Ray

Wood and Fiber Science (Society of Wood Science and Technology)OA

In a previous study, the knot depth ratio (KDR) evaluation method was proposed to quantify the area of knots in a cross-section. That study reported that bending strength can be predicted by KDR analysis. However, the KDR model did not take into consideration the additional strength reduction caused by adjacent knots. It was found that the prediction of lumber strength was improved when adjacent knots were taken into consideration. Analysis using the KDRA (KDR adding knots) model revealed that t

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a relatively new engineered wood for timber construction. It is a great shear wall material. It was known that the shear performance of the CLT wall depends on the performance of connections. In connection, nail or screw has to be installed with a certain distance from the end of the timber. Current building code specifies the distance on the name of end distance. The end distance was decided as a minimum distance not to make splitting or tearing out in lumber or

Sensitivity of censored data analysis to determine the characteristic value of structural timber

SJR Q1Journal of Wood ScienceOA

Abstract In structural timber tests, unintended failure mechanisms occur frequently in specimens and their results are called censored data. There are two censored data analysis: censored maximum likelihood estimation (CMLE) and Kaplan–Meier (KM) method. In this study, the precision of the censored data analysis was investigated to determine the characteristic value, 5th percentile value, of the structural timber. The results show that (1) the 5th percentile value was underestimated by ordinary

Abstract This study is aiming at the simulation of wood compression (C) at a macroscopic level by means of a three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) of solid wood and evaluation of the capability and limitations of this approach. C-Tests were carried out on Douglas fir according to ASTM D 143. The specimens included the 25×25×100 mm 3 cuboid bars for longitudinal (L), radial (R) and tangential (T) directions and the conventional 50×50×150 mm 3 blocks for the perpendicular to grain (⊥)

Glued-in rods (GIRs) have emerged as an innovative solution for timber connections, offering superior pull-out performance and aesthetic benefits. However, existing design methods for predicting the GIR pull-out stiffness are either excessively complex or fail to provide accurate predictions because they neglect critical deformation components. This study proposes a theoretical model for predicting the pull-out stiffness of GIRs in timber based on the Timoshenko and Volkersen theories to develop
