15The authors present a method for locating car license plates using neural networks. Neural networks are used as filters for analysing small windows of an image and deciding whether each window contains a license plate. A post-processor combines these filtered images and gives the final location of the license plates. The method offers robustness when dealing with noisy images. Tests with car images travelling on the road and at the entrance of a car park showed extraction rates of 99 and 97.5%,
A new biomimetic linear actuator named Antagonistically Driven Linear Actuator (ANTLA) that could be directly employed in both macro and microscale of robotic applications is introduced in the present work. The presented actuator provides cost effectiveness and simple fabrication process thanks to its plain construction. In addition to producing basic bidirectional rectilinear motions, the actuator is able to modulate its compliance that might be one of the critical elements of the actuator func
Hemorrhoidal disease is a highly prevalent anorectal condition causing substantial discomfort, disability, and decreased quality of life. Evidence on preventable risk factors for hemorrhoidal disease is limited. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 194,620 healthy men and women who completed a health screening exam including colonoscopy in 2011-2017. We evaluated potential risk factors of hemorrhoidal disease, including lifestyle factors, medical history, birth history, gastrointestinal sympt
A totally laparoscopic approach might provide short-term benefits associated with enhanced postoperative recovery despite a longer procedure time and larger blood loss. It can be a reasonable option for simultaneous colorectal and hepatic resection.
IvACT is a promising noninvasive follow-up examination after ICAS. With its high spatial resolution, it can reliably detect or exclude ISR. Contrary to iaDSA, there is no need for a recovery period after ivACT and the risk of neurologic complications is practically lowered to zero.
Although periodontal disease and gastrointestinal tract health are closely associated, few studies have investigated whether periodontitis is a risk factor for colorectal adenoma. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between periodontitis and the risk of colorectal adenoma in asymptomatic healthy people. From January 2013 to October 2015, we retrospectively enrolled 42,871 patients who underwent health screening at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in South Korea. e21515 Background: In our previous study, the presence of c-kit mutation as well as tumor size and mitotic count was an independent poor risk factor for relapse after curative resection of primary localized GIST. The patients with all the 3 poor risk factors had only 30% of 2 year relapse free survival rate (RFSR). (Kim, et al. Clin Cancer Res, 2004) It is also well known that c-kit exon 11 mutant GISTs respond better to imatinib treatment than the other mutant or wild type GISTs. Therefore, the
BACKGROUND: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who have received neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) and undergone curative resection remains unclear. METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of prospectively collected data. Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who underwent curative surgery after neoadjuvant CCRT between January 2006 and March 2011 were identified. Four hundred forty-one patients who completed adj
BACKGROUND: Although a single incision laparoscopic (SIL) technique has been used increasingly in colorectal surgery, there are only a few reports on the clinical availability of this approach coupled with low anterior resection (SIL-LAR) for colorectal cancers. We report here 96 consecutive cases of SIL-LAR and reduced port LAR cases, of which the initial approach was SIL. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of prospectively collected data of SIL-LAR cases performed by a single surgeon in S
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common malignancy in Korea and has been ranked as the third leading cause of cancer deaths in 2020. Although the incidence and mortality rates of CRC have decreased in recent years in Korea, it is still a significant public health burden. From the early 1990s until the mid-2000s, the 5-year relative survival of patients with CRC in Korea continuously increased. This finding appears to be a consequence of the successful introduction of a government-led s
Conversion from SILS to HALS in colorectal surgery was feasible and effective. It seemed to add minimal morbidity while preserving advantages of minimally invasive surgery. It could be considered an alternative to open conversion in cases of SILS, especially when the conversion to conventional laparoscopy does not seem to be helpful.
The standard treatments for locally advanced rectal cancer typically involved neoadjuvant therapy with either short-course radiation or long-course chemoradiation, followed by radical surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. While the advancement of surgical techniques and the adoption of multimodal therapy have greatly contributed to reducing local failure, there has been limited improvement in overall survival, primarily due to the stagnation in systemic failure. In response to this challenge, a new
