15Serious climate changes and energy-related environmental problems are currently critical issues in the world. In order to reduce carbon emissions and save our environment, renewable energy harvesting technologies will serve as a key solution in the near future. Among them, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which is one of the most promising mechanical energy harvesters by means of contact electrification phenomenon, are explosively developing due to abundant wasting mechanical energy sources
Hydrophobic sponge structure-based triboelectric nanogenerators using an inverse opal structured film for sustainable energy harvesting over a wide range of humid atmosphere have been successfully demonstrated. The output voltage and current density reach a record value of 130 V and 0.10 mA cm(-2) , respectively, giving over 10-fold power enhancement, compared with the flat film-based triboelectric nanogenerator.
Abstract For existing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), it is important to explore unique methods to further enhance the output power under realistic environments to speed up their commercialization. We report here a practical TENG composed of three layers, in which the key layer, an electric double layer, is inserted between a top layer, made of Al/polydimethylsiloxane, and a bottom layer, made of Al. The efficient charge separation in the middle layer, based on Volta’s electrophorus, resul
A facile synthesis of mesoporous films impregnated with Au nanoparticles as effective dielectrics for enhancing the TENG's performance based on vertical contact-separation mode is demonstrated.
Highly stretchable 2D fabrics are prepared by weaving fibers for a fabric-structured triboelectric nanogenerator (FTENG). The fibers mainly consist of Al wires and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tubes with a high-aspect-ratio nanotextured surface with vertically aligned nanowires. The fabrics were produced by interlacing the fibers, which was bonded to a waterproof fabric for all-weather use for fabric-structured triboelectric nanogenerator (FTENG). It showed a stable high-output voltage and curren
Harvesting energy using piezoelectric materials such as ZnO, at nanoscale due to geometrical effects, are highly desirable for powering portable electronics, biomedical, and healthcare applications. Although one‐dimensional nanostructures such as nanowires have been the most widely studied for these applications, there exist a limited number of piezomaterials that can be easily manufactured into nanowires, thus, developing effective and reliable means of preparing nanostructures from a wide vari
Exceptionally sensitive hydrogen sensors were produced using Pd-nanoparticle-decorated, single vanadium dioxide nanowires. The high-sensitivity arises from the large downward shift in the insulator to metal transition temperature following the adsorption on and incorporation of atomic hydrogen, produced by dissociative chemisorption on Pd, in the VO(2), producing approximately 1000-fold current increases. During a rapid initial process, the insulator to metal transition temperature is decreased
Abstract High‐output triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are demonstrated based on polyimide (PI)‐based polymers by introducing functionalities (e.g., electron‐withdrawing and electron‐donating groups) into the backbone. The TENG based on 6FDA‐APS PI, possessing the most negative electrostatic potential and the low‐lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level, produces the highest effective charge density of about 860 µC m −2 in practical working conditions with the ion injection process. Th
Water electrolysis is emerging as a promising renewable-energy technology for the green production of hydrogen, which is a representative and reliable clean energy source. From economical and industrial perspectives, the development of earth-abundant non-noble metal-based and bifunctional catalysts, which can simultaneously exhibit high catalytic activities and stabilities for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is critical; however, to date, these
Ever since a new energy harvesting technology, known as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), was reported in 2012, the rapid development of device fabrication techniques and mechanical system designs have considerably made the instantaneous output power increase up to several tens of mW/cm². With this innovative technology, a lot of researchers experimentally demonstrated that various portable/wearable devices could be operated without any external power. This article provides a comprehensive r
An electronic nose (e-nose) strategy is described based on SnO(2) nanowire arrays whose sensing properties are modified by changing their operating temperatures and by decorating some of the nanowires with metallic nanoparticles. Since the catalytic processes occurring on the metal nanoparticles depend on the identity of the metal, decorating the semiconducting nanowires with various metal nanoparticles is akin to functionalizing them with chemically specific moieties. Other than the synthesis o
A sustainable highly charged C60-functionalized polyimide is introduced as the dielectric of a TENG, which generates higher output power and a superior charge density with slower charge decay rate, compared with a perfluoroalkoxy alkane film-based TENG.
