15Abstract After radioiodine (RI) therapy, patients with thyroid cancer frequently suffer from painful salivary gland (SG) swelling, xerostomia, taste alterations, and oral infections. This study was aimed to determine whether adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) might restore RI-induced SG dysfunction in a murine model. Forty -five mice were divided into three groups; a PBS sham group, a RI+ PBS sham group (0.01 mCi/g mouse, orally), and an RI+AdMSCs (1 × 10 5 cells/150 uL, intraglandu
Irradiation can cause salivary gland hypofunction, with hyposalivation producing discomfort, health risks, and reducing function in daily life. Despite increasing translational research interest in radioprotection, there are no satisfactory treatments available. Keratinocyte growth factor-1 stimulates proliferation of salivary epithelial cells or salivary stem/progenitor cells. However, the exact mechanism of its radioprotection against radiation-induced salivary hypofunction is not fully elucid
BACKGROUND: Vocal cord paralysis (VCP) caused by recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) damage during thyroidectomy commonly results in serious medico-legal problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of an asymmetrically porous polycaprolactone (PCL)/Pluronic F127 nerve guide conduit (NGC) for functional regeneration in a RLN injury animal model. METHODS: A biodegradable, asymmetrically porous PCL/F127 NGC with selective permeability was fabricated for use in this study. A 10-mm
The present study was conducted to introduce the use of a delivery carrier for local transplantation of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AdMSCs) into the salivary gland (SG) and analyse its ability to enhance radioprotection of AdMSCs against irradiation (IR)-induced damage. An injectable porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) matrix was used as a cell delivery carrier, and human AdMSCs were contained within SIS hydrogel (AdMSC/SIS). After local injection into SGs of mice f
Objectives/Hypothesis This study aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes of sialendoscopy in patients with salivary duct stenosis and to investigate factors associated therewith. Study Design Retrospective case series. Methods This study included 47 patients with salivary stenosis who underwent sialendoscopy between January 2014 and December 2015. Subjective symptom, salivary flow rate, salivary scintigraphy, and radiologic evaluation using magnetic resonance (MR) sialography were performed preop
Vocal cord paralysis caused by recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury during thyroidectomy results in hoarseness, aspiration, and dyspnea. We evaluated the usefulness of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) constructed from an asymmetric polycaprolactone (PCL)/Pluronic F127 porous membrane and filled with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for functional RLN regeneration. We evaluated the proliferation and migration of Schwann cells (SCs) after PRP treatment in vitro. For the in vivo study, rabbits were divid
Various histological alterations were observed in mice exposed to RAI, that is, an increase in apoptotic acini and ductal cells and functional SG deterioration. The murine model of RAI-induced SG dysfunction used in the present study appears to be applicable to preclinical research on RAI-induced sialadenitis in patients with well-differentiated thyroid cancer.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: There have been several operative techniques for adenoidectomy and their efficacy and morbidity are different according to the technique. This prospective multicenter study was aimed to compare the efficacy and morbidity of coblation adenoidectomy (CA) with those of power-assisted adenoidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective multi-institutional study. METHODS: Children who underwent CA, power-assisted adenoidectomy with cauterization (PAA+C) or without cauterization (PAA-C) due
OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine whether a nitinol stent coated with doxycycline prevents tracheal inflammation and fibrosis in a rabbit. METHODS: A nitinol stent coated with doxycycline was designed by us. Twelve rabbits were divided into three groups: normal, control (nondoxycycline-coated stent), and doxycycline-coated stent group. The stents were inserted into the tracheal lumen through the oral cavity. Tracheal granulation was evaluated and graded by laryngoscopy. Histologi
OBJECTIVES: To compare the rheological characteristics of structurally different hyaluronic acid (HA)-based biomaterials that are presently used for phonosurgery and to investigate their influence on the viscoelastic properties of vocal folds after implantation in an in vivo rabbit model. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro and in vivo rheometric investigation. SETTING: Experimental laboratory, Inha and Seoul National Universities. METHODS: Viscoelastic shear properties of 3 HA-based biomaterials (Rofilan, R
Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm with a variety of histologic appearances. Due to this diversity, precise preoperative diagnosis through fine needle aspiration cytology is difficult. This study sought to identify the differentially expressed genes in pleomorphic adenoma to aid precise diagnosis and clarify the mechanism of tumorigenesis.Suppressive subtractive hybridization was performed on pleomorphic adenoma tissues and the corresponding normal salivary gland tissu
