Although most SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals experience mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), some patients suffer from severe COVID-19, which is accompanied by acute respiratory distress syndrome and systemic inflammation. To identify factors driving severe progression of COVID-19, we performed single-cell RNA-seq using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from healthy donors, patients with mild or severe COVID-19, and patients with severe influenza. Patients with COVID-19 e

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers have been actively investigated to supplement functional and imaging modalities to predict the severity, therapeutic responsiveness, and progression of connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD). This study aimed to evaluate Krebs von den Lungen 6 (KL-6) as a potential biomarker reflecting the severity of CTD-ILD as assessed through computed tomography (CT) and pulmonary function test (PFT) parameters. METHODS: This retrospective study include

Few studies have used a longitudinal approach to describe the immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we perform single-cell RNA sequencing of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cells longitudinally obtained from SARS-CoV-2-infected ferrets. Landscape analysis of the lung immune microenvironment shows distinct changes in cell proportions and characteristics compared to uninfected control, at 2 and 5 days post-infection (dpi). Macrophages are classified into 10 distinct subpopulations with trans

This review discusses important scientific progress, problems, and prospects of lignin-based materials in the field of rechargeable batteries. Lignin, a component of the secondary cell wall, is considered a promising source of biomass. Compared to cellulose, which is the most extensively studied biomass material, lignin has a competitive price and a variety of functional groups leading to broad utilization such as adhesive, emulsifier, pesticides, polymer composite, carbon precursor, etc. The li

Increased Osteogenic Differentiation of Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells on Polydopamine Film Occurs via Activation of Integrin and PI3K Signaling Pathways

SJR Q2Cellular Physiology and BiochemistryOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) is known to be an effective bioadhesive and bioactive material for controlling stem cell fate, which is important in stem cell-based regenerative medicine; however, the effect of PDA on osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the osteoinductive effect of PDA on PDLSCs and examined how this phenomenon is encouraged. METHODS: Osteogenic induction of PDLSCs was

Evidence on whether prior antibiotic (pATB) administration modulates outcomes of programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) is scarce. In this study, we find that pATB administration is consistently associated with poor progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in multiple cohorts consisting of patients with AGC treated with PD-1 inhibitors. In contrast, pATB does not affect outcomes among patients treated with irinotecan. Multivariable ana

BACKGROUND: Oxycodone, a semisynthetic thebaine derivative opioid, is widely used for the relief of moderate to severe pain. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and side effects of oxycodone and fentanyl in the management of postoperative pain by intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) in patients who underwent laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH). METHODS: The 127 patients were randomized to postoperative pain treatment with either oxycodone (n = 64, group O) or

SJR Q2Cell Biochemistry and Function

Human periodontal ligament-derived stem cells (PDLSCs) demonstrate self-renewal capacity and multilineage differentiation potential. In this study, we investigated the transdifferentiation potential of human PDLSCs into pancreatic islet cells. To form three-dimensional (3D) clusters, PDLSCs were cultured in Matrigel with media containing differentiation-inducing agents. We found that after 6 days in culture, PDLSCs underwent morphological changes resembling pancreatic islet-like cell clusters (I

A mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA), resulting from the oxidative polymerization of dopamine, was reported to be an attractive substrate for advancing biomaterial applications. Thus, this study determined the osteoconductive/osteoinductive properties of titanium (Ti) surfaces coated with PDA and the facilitation of the PDA layer to immobilize bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on Ti substrates. The surface chemistry of PDA or PDA/BMP-2-coated Ti was confirmed by contact angle measurement, sca

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is an ongoing issue in certain populations, presenting rapidly worsening pneumonia and persistent symptoms. This study aimed to test the predictability of rapid progression using radiographic scores and laboratory markers and present longitudinal changes. This retrospective study included 218 COVID-19 pneumonia patients admitted at the Chungnam National University Hospital. Rapid progression was defined as respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation
