15Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most serious complications of colorectal surgery. It can affect long-term oncologic outcomes, but the impact on long-term survival remains uncertain. The aim of this study is to evaluate the operative characteristics of leakage and no leakage groups and to analyze long-term oncologic outcomes. We prospectively enrolled 10,477 patients from 2000 to 2011 and retrospectively reviewed the data.Male sex (odds ratio [OR], 3.90; P < 0.001), intraoperative transfusi
Mucinous adenocarcinoma (MAC) is a histological subtype of colorectal cancer. The oncologic behavior of MAC differs from nonmucinous adenocarcinoma (non-MAC). Our aim in this study was to characterize patients with colorectal MAC through evaluation of a large, institutional-based cohort with long-term follow-up. A total of 6475 patients with stages I to III colorectal cancer who underwent radical surgery were enrolled from January 2000 to December 2010. Prognostic comparison between MAC (n = 274
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the prognostic value of the preoperative serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in patients with colon cancer. METHODS: We reviewed 474 patients who underwent potentially curative resection for nonmetastatic colon cancer. Patients were categorized into two groups according to the preoperative serum CEA level: low CEA (<5 ng/ml) and high CEA (>or=5 ng/ml) groups. RESULTS: During the median 45-month follow-up period, the 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates fo
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the prognostic significance of the distribution of lymph node metastases (LND) in patients with colorectal cancer. BACKGROUND: The impact of the LND on survival in colorectal cancer is unknown. METHODS: A total of 1205 consecutive patients who underwent potentially curative surgery for sigmoid colon or rectal cancer with high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) from January 1997 to February 2008 were assigned to 4 groups based on LND: LND0, no lymph n
Pretreatment clinical variables, including tumor circumferentiality, macroscopic ulceration, and CEA level, may be important determinants in achieving a pathological complete response.
ERUS and CT may allow good prediction of node-negative rectal cancers, although they are inaccurate modalities for predicting treatment response on the rectal wall. New methods of interpretation and diagnostic criteria for ERUS and CT are essential for increasing the accuracy of cancer prediction in at-risk patients.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression of standard CD44 (CD44s) in colorectal cancer (CRC), its relationship with clinicopathological characteristics, and its potential prognostic significance. CD44s levels were measured on immunohistochemistry in tumors and surrounding normal mucosa from 74 patients with primary colorectal carcinomas. The patients were followed for a median period of 37 months. Expression of CD44s in primary tumor and surrounding normal mucosa tissues was d
A circumferential resection margin of ≤1 mm had a strong association with disease-free survival compared with circumferential resection margins ≤0.5, ≤2.0, and ≤3 mm. A circumferential resection margin ≤1 mm was an independent predictor of a poor outcome in both the nonchemoradiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy groups.
Elevated CD44 mRNA levels in pretreatment biopsies might be predictive of poor tumor regression after preoperative chemoradiation in rectal cancer. Moreover, the proliferating cell nuclear antigen mRNA level might be predictive of nodal regression.
