15BACKGROUND: Silastic splints have been used as effective tools for septal support, avoiding adhesion, and mucosal healing after septal surgery. Furthermore, although many surgeons insert septal splints, no well-designed trials exist to support their use. A randomized double-blinded controlled trial was performed. METHODS: We recruited 40 subjects who had undergone septoplasty only without sinus surgery or turbinoplasty. A silastic septal splint was inserted in one side of the nasal cavity at the
BACKGROUND: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), or Gore-Tex (W.L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ), is widely used in augmentation rhinoplasty, and the histological changes that it undergoes in the human body have been studied for decades. However, changes in the thickness of ePTFE after its use in augmentation rhinoplasty with a noninvasive object method are not well understood. METHODS: We report the results of 19 patients (10 male and 9 female patients) who had undergone an uncomplicat
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nasal obstruction caused by nasal septal deviation is very bothersome and, therefore, can affect the patient's emotional state. However, little is known about the effect of nasal septal deviation (NSD) on the neuropsychiatric aspects of patients. Therefore, this study aims to verify the higher incidence of anxiety, depression, and migraine in patients diagnosed with NSD compared to general populations using big data. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study collected subjects
BACKGROUND: When the skin-prick test (SPT) and in vitro test such as ImmunoCAP assay are performed simultaneously, results do not always coincide in some patients. Our objectives, therefore, were (1) to assess differences in allergic test results according to age group and (2) to establish appropriate guidelines for diagnosing mite allergy according to age. METHODS: A total of 692 participants complaining of allergic rhinitis symptoms participated. Patients were divided according to age; the mea
BACKGROUND: This study aims to develop artificial intelligence (AI) system to automatically classify patients with maxillary sinus fungal ball (MFB), chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: We collected 512 coronal image sets from ostiomeatal unit computed tomography (OMU CT) performed on subjects who visited a single tertiary hospital. These data included 254 MFB, 128 CRS, and 130 HC subjects and were used for training the proposed AI system. The AI system takes these
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides three-dimensional volumetric imaging of a target with low radiation dose and cost compared with conventional computed tomography, and it is widely used in the detection of paranasal sinus disease. However, it lacks the sensitivity to detect soft tissue lesions owing to reconstruction constraints. Consequently, only physicians with expertise in CBCT reading can distinguish between inherent artifacts or noise and diseases,
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate efficacy of short term intranasal corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) treatment in pediatric sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) patients. METHODS: A prospective, observational study was done. A total of 41 children (2-11 years old) were enrolled into this study. All patients received 4-weeks course of mometasone furoate 100 µg/day treatment. They were evaluated at pretreatment and immediately after treatment with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-18 quality of life survey and l
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a horse-riding simulator (HRS) with virtual reality (VR) on gross motor function, balance control, and body composition in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP). Seventeen preschool and school-aged children with spastic CP were included; 10 children in the intervention group (HRS group) received 30 min of HRS with VR training twice a week for a total of 16 sessions in addition to conventional physiotherapy. Seven children in the control group were i
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Olfactory deficits that develop after viral upper respiratory infection (URI) may have different effects on patient depression index compared to chronic sinusitis with olfactory loss. However, there have been no controlled trials to evaluate the different effects of chronic sinusitis and URI on depression index. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of 25 subjects in two groups. METHODS: This study enrolled 25 participants who were diagnosed with post-URI olfactory loss as the s
BACKGROUND: Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is one of the most common benign tumors of the sinonasal area and malignant transformation has frequently been reported. However, the exact mechanism of the transition from benign lesion to malignancy is not known. The Wnt signaling pathway involves a network of multiple signaling glycoproteins that are known to play an important role in embryogenesis and carcinogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of the Wnt pathway
BACKGROUND: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) is currently one of the most popular implant materials for rhinoplasty. Surgiform (Surgiform Technology, Ltd., Lugoff, SC) is a recently introduced ePTFE material with physical characteristics that are slightly different from Gore-Tex (W.L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ). Changes in Surgiform thickness after rhinoplasty are not well documented. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 16 patients (12 male and 4 female patients) who underwe
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a soluble human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) receptor blocker (etanercept) on an inducible olfactory inflammation (IOI) mouse model. STUDY DESIGN: An in vivo study using a transgenic mouse model. SETTING: Research laboratory. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: To study the impact of chronic inflammation on the olfactory system, a transgenic mouse model of chronic rhinosinusitis-associated olfactory loss was utilized (IOI mouse), expressing TNF-α in a temporally co
OBJECTIVE: Although topical decongestants and anesthetics are widely used in preparation for nasal endoscopy, no controlled trials have evaluated the effects of these agents on olfaction. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized double-blinded controlled trial. SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors recruited 72 healthy subjects and randomly assigned them to 1 of 4 groups (control, phenylephrine group, lidocaine group, and both agents). After baseline tests with the Korean versi

Septoturbinoplasty is a surgical procedure that can improve nasal congestion symptoms in patients with nasal septal deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy. However, it is unclear which physical domains of nasal airflow after septoturbinoplasty are related to symptomatic improvement. This work employs computational fluid dynamics modeling to identify the physical variables and domains associated with symptomatic improvement. Sixteen numerical models were generated using eight patients' pre-
