15Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) can act as both a tumor suppressor and a stimulator of tumor progression. We have examined the relationship between polymorphisms of the TGF-beta1 gene and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A total of 1,237 Korean subjects were prospectively enrolled; 1,046 patients with chronic HBV infection and 191 healthy controls with no evidence of recent or remote HBV infection. The patients we
Pancreatic cystic neoplasms comprise a pathologically heterogeneous group with many shared clinical features. We assessed the reliability of cyst fluid analysis for the differential diagnosis of pancreatic cysts. Cyst fluid was obtained by fine-needle aspiration from 78 pancreatic cysts. The lesions studied consisted of 17 mucinous cystic tumors (MCTs), 13 serous cystadenomas (SCAs), 5 solid pseudopapillary tumors (SPTs), 8 intraductal papillary mucinous tumors (IPMTs), 6 ductal adenocarcinomas
AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality. Sarcopenia has been reported as a risk factor for MetS, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and CVD. To date, the association between sarcopenia and MetS has been investigated. However, there have been few studies on the dose-response relationship between sarcopenia and MetS. We investigated the association between sarcopenia and the prevalence of MetS. We also aimed
ABSTRACT The electrical properties of Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 /Mo junctions were characterized with respect of MoSe 2 orientation and Na doping level using an inverse transmission line method, in which the Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS)/Mo contact resistance could be measured separately from the CIGS film sheet resistance. The MoSe 2 orientation was controlled by varying the Mo surface density, with the c ‐axis parallel and normal orientations favored on Mo surfaces of lower and higher density, respectively. The ef
In hepatic cysts with mural nodule, left-lobe cyst or increment of serum alkaline phosphatase seem to be indicative of BCTs in the diagnosis of suspicious hepatic cyst. Intracystic debris, bile duct dilation, and mural nodule may be suggestive clinical features of malignancy in BCTs.
Abstract The influence of body fat on arterial stiffness remains controversial. This study was performed to investigate the associations between four different types of body fat parameters and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). A total of 3758 subjects (mean age, 53.4 ± 8.8 years; females, 36.3%) who underwent health check-up were retrospectively analyzed. Anthropometric parameters including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and waist–hip ratio (WHR) were assessed, and vis
Cholangitis occurs frequently in hepatolithiasis patients with a common hepatic or common bile duct stricture, residual stones, recurrent stones, and in those that are treated by nonhepatic resection.
Physicians should recognize the role of sleep impairment and psychological stress in the development of FGIDs and a comprehensive approach should be considered to manage patients with FGIDs.
AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a global health problem associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia contribute to the development of MS and CVD. Previous studies have investigated the association of individual body composition parameters with MS. Studies analyzing the association between multiple body composition parameters and MS have been rare. We aimed
We aimed to assess the relationship between lifestyle-related variables, metabolic syndrome, and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men ≥ 40 years. We also assessed the impact of these variables on quality of life. From 2014 to 2020, 5355 men who underwent health check-ups with I-PSS questionnaires at our institute were included in the analysis. The impact of LUTS on sleep disorders and moderate to severe degrees of stress were assessed. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the v
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The clinical features of pancreatitis in patients with an anomalous union of the pancreatobiliary duct (AUPBD) are unclear. This study analyzed the clinical features, pathogenic mechanisms, risk factors, and clinical courses after treatment in AUPBD patients. METHODOLOGY: The medical records and cholangiopancreatograms of 58 patients with AUPBD and a choledochal cyst diagnosed between 1982 and 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Sixteen (27.6%) out of the 58 AUPBD patie
Although the association of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with obesity or sarcopenia is known, few studies have investigated the combined effect of various body composition parameters on the risk of NAFLD. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate effects of interactions between various body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia, on NAFLD. Data of subjects who underwent health checkups between 2010 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyz
The prevalence and age of onset of hearing loss differ according to sex. This study aimed to identify associated factors for age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and determine whether there are differences between males and females regarding associated factors for ARHL. This cross-sectional study used data from adults who underwent medical examinations including hearing tests from 2011 to 2021. A total of 2,349 individuals were included. The study conducted sex-specific analyses using both univariate
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with poor prognosis even without distant metastases, necessitating in-depth characterization of primary tumors for survival prediction. We assessed the feasibility of using FDG-PET/CT radiomics to predict overall survival (OS) in PDAC. This retrospective study included PDAC patients without distant metastasis who underwent FDG-PET/CT for initial staging. Primary tumors were segmented from FDG-PET/CT images, extracting 222 radiomics features.
AIM: Liver cirrhosis and features of muscle or adipose tissues may affect the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP). We aimed to evaluate the impact of body composition parameters and liver cirrhosis on the severity of AP in patients with alcohol-induced AP (AAP). METHODS: Patients with presumed AAP who underwent CT within one week after admission were retrospectively enrolled. L3 sectional areas of abdominal fat and muscle, and mean muscle attenuations (MMAs) were quantified. The presence of live
