15In a phase I/IIa open-label and nonrandomized controlled clinical trial, we sought to assess the safety and neurological effects of human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNSPCs) transplanted into the injured cord after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Of 19 treated subjects, 17 were sensorimotor complete and 2 were motor complete and sensory incomplete. hNSPCs derived from the fetal telencephalon were grown as neurospheres and transplanted into the cord. In the control group, who did n
The dielectric behavior containing the film thickness dependent dielectric constant, capacitance–voltage (C–V) variation, and the electrical conduction behavior containing the film thickness dependent current density-electric field variation of rf sputter deposited (Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BST) thin films are analyzed based on a fully depleted film and a combined Schottky-tunneling conduction model. The fact that the capacitance values in C–V increase with the increasing film thickness clearly indicates tha
In conclusion, the clinical picture of HFS after MVD improves with time, and abnormal muscle response can be used as a prognostic indicator for the resolution of HFS during the follow-up period.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) compared to conventional overground training. METHODS: Sixty patients with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) were included in a prospective, randomized clinical trial by comparing RAGT to conventional overground training. The RAGT group received RAGT three sessions per week at duration of 40 minutes with regular physiotherapy in 4 weeks. The conventional group underwent regular physiotherapy twice a day, 5 times
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the severity of depression, degree of life satisfaction, level of stress, and resilience among patients in the first 6 months after a spinal cord injury (SCI). METHOD: 36 patients with SCI were asked to fill out questionnaires concerning Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-BREF, Stress Response Inventory, and Connor-Davidson resilience scale. All patients had experienced an SCI within the last 6 months before the commenc
The electrical conduction behaviors of sol-gel derived Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films on Pt electrodes were analyzed based on a fully depleted film, thermionic field emission, and space charge limited conduction model in the low and high electric field regions, respectively. For films having thicknesses ranging from 150 to 250 nm, no thickness-dependent variation in the dielectric constant was observed due to the relatively large thicknesses. The rather small film-thickness-dependent leakage curr
Many trends changed in epidemiology of spinal cord injury.
Our findings suggest that the posteromedial parietal cortex, which is part of the neural network for consciousness, may be the relevant structure for the pharmacological response to methylphenidate treatment in patients with impaired consciousness after acquired brain injury.
Cervical and upper thoracic spinal cord injury causes impairments in respiratory muscle performance, leading to variable degrees of pulmonary dysfunction and rendering deep breathing difficult for affected individuals. In this retrospective study, we investigated the effects of self-directed respiratory muscle training in this context by assessing pulmonary function relative to spinal cord injury characteristics. A total of 104 spinal cord injury patients (tetraplegia/paraplegia; 65/39, acute/su
Cholinergic augmentation by donepezil therapy in traumatic brain injury shows a cortical metabolic effect on the both of the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal cortices associated with clinical response to treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze association between urodynamic study (UDS) parameters and renal function in spinal cord injured (SCI) patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity. METHODS: Patients with a suprasacral SCI, who underwent UDS and radioisotope renogram at least twice between January 1, 2006 and January 31, 2013, were included. UDS (cystometric capacity, reflex volume, compliance, and maximal detrusor pressure) and radioisotope renogram (total effective renal plasma flow [ERPF] of both kidne
The electrical conduction behavior of sputter-grown (Ba, Sr)TiO3(BST) thin films having IrO2 electrodes were studied under the assumption of a fully accumulated film. In the film-thickness range studied (40–80 nm), the dielectric constants and their electric field dependencies were found to be independent of the film thickness. Contrary to similar BST films grown on Pt electrodes, the leakage current density decreased with increasing film thickness at a given field. The phenomena were explained
