15In this study, chemical characteristics of PM2.5 collected between October 1 and November 4, 2019 at Chungcheong region air quality research center in Seosan, were studied to understand reasons leading to PM2.5 increases. 24-hr integrated PM2.5 samples were analysed for organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), water-soluble OC (WSOC), and eight water-soluble inorganic ions. Over the study period, increase in PM2.5 concentration was attributed to enhancement of organic mass (OM=1.8×OC) and NO3 -
To characterize the correlation between tropospheric O3 and PM2.5 by season, a comprehensive analysis for the interaction between tropospheric O3 and PM2.5 has been performed over 25 sites in Seoul in 2017. Highly positive correlation between O3 and PM2.5 was observed during the summer period (June, July, and August) and this is related to the simultaneous formation of O3 and PM2.5 due to an increase of the atmospheric oxidation ability. While, correlations of O3 and PM2.5 were negative in the w
To identify and quantify the contribution of the major sources for the ambient carbonaceous aerosols at a Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station in Korea, a receptor model, the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model was applied for the oneyear long measurement data. Particulate matter less than or equal to 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) aerosols were sampled at Anmyeon Island GAW station from June 2015 to May 2016 and carbonaceous species including ~80 organic compounds were analyzed.
Seosan is a concentrated industrial complex in the midwestern region of Korea. A study was conducted from December 2020 to January 2021, measuring PM2.5 and chemical components in Seosan using online instruments every hour. The concentration of PM2.5 during the winter season was 31.4±17.8 μg/m3, exceeding the national ambient air quality standard of Korea. The mass fraction of organic matter, elemental carbon, three major ions, five minor ions, crustal elements, and trace elements in PM2.5 accou
A comparison of analytical approaches for Levoglucosan (C6H10O5, commonly formed from the pyrolysis of carbohydrates such as cellulose) and used for a molecular marker in biomass burning is made between the four different analytical systems. 1) Spectrothermography technique as the evaluation of thermograms of carbon using Elemental Carbon & Organic Carbon Analyzer, 2) mass spectrometry technique using Gas Chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), 3) Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) for the identi
Characteristics of carbonaceous components and organic compounds in PM2.5 over the atmosphere of the Yellow Sea were investigated. PM2.5 samples were collected onboard the meteorological research vessel, GISANG 1, over the Yellow Sea during the YES-AQ campaign in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The average concentrations of carbonaceous components in this region were 2.59 ± 1.59 g m3 for the OC, 0.24 ± 0.10 g m3 for the EC, 2.14 ± 1.30 g m3 for the WSOC and 1.17 ± 0.94 g m3 for the HULIS-C,
The organic carbon in the ambient particulate matter (PM) is divided into primary organic carbon (POC) and secondary organic carbon (SOC) by their formation way. To regulate PM effectively, the estimation of the amount of POC and SOC separately is one of important consideration. Since SOC cannot be measured directly, previous studies have evaluated determination of SOC by the EC tracer method. The EC tracer method is a method of estimating the SOC value from calculating the POC by determining (O
In this study, to characterize PM1.0 concentrations and chemical composition, seasonal PM1.0 samples were collected using a single channel particulate sampler equipped with PM1.0 cyclone and quantified the chemical compositions of PM1.0. The sampling of PM1.0 was carried out at the Seoul Metropolitan Area Air Pollution Research Center located at Bulgwang in Seoul. The 8 ions (Cl-, NO3 -, SO4 2-, Na+, NH4 +, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and 13 elements (As, Cd,
Characteristics and advantages of the thermal desorption-comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatographytime of flight mass spectrometry (TD-GCxGC-TOFMS) were discussed and the organic compound’s analysis result was shown for the ambient PM 2.5 sample collected in Seoul, Korea. Over 10,000 individual organic compounds were separated from about 70 μg of aerosols in a single procedure with no sample pre-treatment. Among them, around 300 compounds were identified and classified based on the mass f
