15This paper explores the use of rating scales as a tool for assessing interpreting performance. Drawing on common quality criteria in the interpreting literature, the researcher’s intuitive understanding of different levels of interpreting quality, as well as the rating scales used in second language assessment, a rating scale with three criteria was developed a priori and trialled by a group of raters. Two groups of raters – experienced professional interpreters and novice interpreters – rated f
This survey-based study examined the views of 226 legal professionals and 36 interpreting practitioners in Australia with respect to the role of the court interpreter and the quality of interpreting and revealed a statistically significant gap between the perceptions of the two professional groups. Both groups, however, were ambivalent in relation to some practical aspects of court interpreting, such as cultural intervention and the reproduction of speech style. The findings indicate that legal
Although sight translation is widely taught in interpreter education and practicsed in the field, there has been a dearth of studies on sight translation. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a pilot study comparing six student interpreters and three professional interpreters’ sight translation of an English speech text into Korean, which is their A language. This paper examines their sight translation performances in terms of accuracy, target language expressions and delivery qualiti
Telephone interpreting has been used widely in various community interpreting settings, but it has received little attention as a distinct area of interpreting in the growing body of interpreting studies. As telephone interpreting is being promoted for its convenience and for the greater availability of interpreters, this paper examines the perspective of telephone interpreters on their professional activity. Based on telephone surveys with Korean interpreters working in Australia, this paper in
The court interpreter's job is particularly demanding because s/he has to provide immediate renditions as close as possible to the meaning and effect of the original utterances, while facing constraints imposed by the institutional setting of the courtroom. Based on naturalistic data from interpreter mediated courtroom examinations and constructed data, namely translations by experienced conference interpreters and translators, this paper puts to the test the feasibility of the norms of faithful
Abstract Drawing on authentic data from Korean interpreter-mediated witness examination in Australian courts, this paper examines facework in the context of the interpreter-mediated courtroom examination. Based on both conceptual and interactional notion of face, this paper focuses on repair attempts when miscommunication, be it actual or potential, arises. The data analysis demonstrates that the interpreter's face is closely connected to the face game in the courtroom, and that a part of the ha
BACKGROUND: Routine health information system(s) (RHIS) facilitate the collection of health data at all levels of the health system allowing estimates of disease prevalence, treatment and preventive intervention coverage, and risk factors to guide disease control strategies. This core health system pillar remains underdeveloped in many low-income and middle-income countries. Efforts to improve RHIS data coverage, quality and timeliness were launched over 10 years ago. METHODS: A systematic revie
Drawing on the discourse of interpreter-mediated examinations of Korean-speaking witnesses in an Australian courtroom, this paper explores court interpreters’ renditions of reported speech contained in witnesses’ evidence. Direct reported speech is generally preferred in the courtroom because of the evidentiary rule against the admission of hearsay. However, Korean-speaking witnesses who are not familiar with this rule and with the discursive practices of the court tend to use indirect reported
Community interpreters, who enable migrants to access communityservices removing language and cultural barriers, work in a wide rangeof professional fields such as immigration, asylum, healthcare, lawenforcement, court and education. Given that the interpreters’competence is closely connected with the quality of communityinterpreting service and migrants’ access to public services, theprofessional standards which apply to the practice of communityinterpreters deserve scholarly attention. The function of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as second messengers in cell differentiation has been demonstrated only for a limited number of cell types. Here, we used a well-established protocol for BMP2-induced neuronal differentiation of neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) to examine the function of BMP2-induced ROS during the process. We first show that BMP2 indeed induces ROS generation in NCSCs and that blocking ROS generation by pretreatment of cells with diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) as NADPH ox
The development of ICT has influenced the education sector, prompting changes in teaching methods. Blended learning, which is a hybrid teaching and learning method, combines face-to-face and online learning techniques, and incorporates individual study with collaborative working. Proponents of blended learning say that the benefits of face-to-face and online approaches are mutually reinforced by each other. This paper sought to apply blended learning in conference interpreter training with a vie
This paper examines legal interpreting service providers’ and users’ perceptions of the norms in legal interpreting on the basis of a questionnaire-based survey of 139 legal professionals and 48 interpreters in Korea. The legal respondents include judges, attorneys, prosecutors, prosecution investigators, and police officers, and the interpreting respondents include both sign language interpreters and foreign language interpreters. The study reported in this paper canvassed the respondents’ prof
Feedback is an essential part of all types of teaching and learning and interpreter training is no exception. This paper examines the theoretical and practical aspects of the feedback that student interpreters receive and give according to a questionnaire-based online survey of fifty-eight students enrolled at a conference interpreter training programme in Seoul. The results indicate that the participants generally appreciate the feedback generated by teachers and peer interaction. However, they
The radioactivity concentration of environmental radionuclides was analyzed for soil and sand at eight locations within a radius of 255 m centered on the Dongnam Institute of Radiological & Medical Science (DIRAMS), Korea. The average activity concentrations of 40K, 137Cs, 226Ra, and 232Th were 661.1 Bq/kg-dry, 0.9 Bq/kg-dry, 21.9 Bq/kg-dry, and 11.1 Bq/kg-dry, respectively. The activity of 40K and 137Cs was lower than the 3-year (2017–2019) average reported by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Saf
Rheumatoid vasculitis is a rare, but most serious extra-articular complications of long-standing, seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Vasculitis of hepatic artery is an extremely rare but severe manifestation of rheumatoid vasculitis. A 72-year-old woman who presented with polyarthralgia for 2 months was diagnosed with early RA. Since she had manifestations of livedo reticularis, and liver dysfunction which was atypical for RA patients, a percutaneous needle liver biopsy was performed reveal
