Intranasal priming induces local lung-resident B cell populations that secrete protective mucosal antiviral IgA

SJR Q1Science ImmunologyOA

Antibodies secreted at the mucosal surface play an integral role in immune defense by serving to neutralize the pathogen and promote its elimination at the site of entry. Secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a predominant Ig isotype at mucosal surfaces whose epithelial cells express polymeric Ig receptor capable of transporting dimeric IgA to the lumen. Although the role of IgA in intestinal mucosa has been extensively studied, the cell types responsible for secreting the IgA that protects the ho

Pattern Recognition Receptors and Autophagy
Ji Eun Oh, Heung Kyu Lee
SJR Q1Frontiers in ImmunologyOA

The immune system senses exogenous threats or endogenous stress through specialized machinery known as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). These receptors recognize conserved molecular structures and initiate downstream signaling pathways to control immune responses. Although various immunologic pathways mediated by PRRs have been described, recent studies have demonstrated a link between PRRs and autophagy. Autophagy is a specialized biological process involved in maintaining homeostasis thro

Dysbiosis-induced IL-33 contributes to impaired antiviral immunity in the genital mucosa

Commensal microbiota are well known to play an important role in antiviral immunity by providing immune inductive signals; however, the consequence of dysbiosis on antiviral immunity remains unclear. We demonstrate that dysbiosis caused by oral antibiotic treatment directly impairs antiviral immunity following viral infection of the vaginal mucosa. Antibiotic-treated mice succumbed to mucosal herpes simplex virus type 2 infection more rapidly than water-fed mice, and also showed delayed viral cl

The majority of glioblastomas develop rapidly with a short clinical history (primary glioblastoma IDH wild-type), whereas secondary glioblastomas progress from diffuse astrocytoma or anaplastic astrocytoma. IDH mutations are the genetic hallmark of secondary glioblastomas. Gliosarcomas and giant cell glioblastomas are rare histological glioblastoma variants, which usually develop rapidly. We determined the genetic patterns of 36 gliosarcomas and 19 giant cell glioblastomas. IDH1 and IDH2 mutatio

Resident Memory B Cells in Barrier Tissues
Choong Man Lee, Ji Eun Oh
SJR Q1Frontiers in ImmunologyOA

Epithelial barriers, which include the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genitourinary mucosa, compose the body's front line of defense. Since barrier tissues are persistently exposed to microbial challenges, a rapid response that can deal with diverse invading pathogens is crucial. Because B cells have been perceived as indirectly contributing to immune responses through antibody production, B cells functioning in the peripheral organs have been outside the scope of researchers. However, recen

Detection of low-level EGFR T790M mutation in lung cancer tissues

SJR Q1Apmis

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutation status is critical to predicting responsiveness to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapies in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. However, a vast majority of the patients experience recurrence of the cancers by a secondary mutation of EGFR (T790M). Earlier studies suggested evidence that subclones bearing EGFR T790M mutation pre-exist in NSCLCs even prior to the therapies. However, to date, the status of T790M mutation in prim

Humoral Immunity against SARS-CoV-2 and the Impact on COVID-19 Pathogenesis
Eun-Jin Lee, Ji Eun Oh
SJR Q1Molecules and CellsOA

It has been more than a year since severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) first emerged. Many studies have provided insights into the various aspects of the immune response in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Especially for antibody treatment and vaccine development, humoral immunity to SARS-CoV-2 has been studied extensively, though there is still much that is unknown and controversial. Here, we introduce key discoveries on the humoral immune responses in COVID-19, inc

Modulation of Pathogen Recognition by Autophagy
Ji Eun Oh, Heung Kyu Lee
SJR Q1Frontiers in ImmunologyOA

Autophagy is an ancient biological process for maintaining cellular homeostasis by degradation of long-lived cytosolic proteins and organelles. Recent studies demonstrated that autophagy is availed by immune cells to regulate innate immunity. On the one hand, cells exert direct effector function by degrading intracellular pathogens; on the other hand, autophagy modulates pathogen recognition and downstream signaling for innate immune responses. Pathogen recognition via pattern recognition recept

Effect of Cardiac Function on Cognition and Brain Structural Changes in Dementia

SJR Q2Journal of Clinical NeurologyOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cardiovascular risk factors are considered to also be risk factors for dementia. Recent studies have shown that the prevalence of cognitive dysfunction is high in patients with cardiac diseases. However, few studies have investigated the influence of cardiac function on cognition and brain structural changes in dementia. The aims of this study were to determine the relationship between cardiac and cognitive function, and to characterize any structural changes in the brain

1-Methyl-L-tryptophan promotes the apoptosis of hepatic stellate cells arrested by interferon-γ by increasing the expression of IFN-γRβ, IRF-1 and FAS

Liver fibrosis, a precursor to cirrhosis, is the result of the deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and is mediated primarily by activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). In this study, we investigated the anti-fibrotic effects of interferon (IFN)-γ in activated HSCs in vitro and whether cell viability would be decreased by the inhibition of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygemase (IDO), which is responsible for cell cycle arrest. Following treatment with IFN-γ, cell signaling pathways and DNA c

OASL1 deficiency promotes antiviral protection against genital herpes simplex virus type 2 infection by enhancing type I interferon production
Ji Eun Oh, Myeong Sup Lee, Young-Joon Kim, Heung Kyu Lee
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Type I interferon (IFN) interferes with virus replication, promotes antiviral responses, and controls innate and adaptive immune responses to certain viruses. Recently, we reported that 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase-like 1 (OASL1) negatively regulates type I IFN production by inhibiting the translation of the type I IFN-regulating master transcription factor, IRF7. Notably, while OASL1-deficient mice induce robust production of type I IFN and are resistant to systemic viral infection, the effe

Autophagy as an Innate Immune Modulator
Ji Eun Oh, Heung Kyu Lee
SJR Q1Immune NetworkOA

Autophagy is a fundamental cellular process in eukaryotic cells for maintaining homeostasis by degrading cellular proteins and organelles. Recently, the roles of autophagy have been expanded to immune systems, which in turn modulate innate immune responses. More specifically, autophagy acts as a direct effector for protection against pathogens, as well as a modulator of pathogen recognition and downstream signaling in innate immune responses. In addition, autophagy controls autoimmunity and infl
