Algorithms and Health Misinformation: A Case Study of Vaccine Books on Amazon
Jieun Shin, Thomas W. Valente
SJR Q1Journal of Health Communication

This study examines how vaccine-related books appear on Amazon, focusing on search and recommendation algorithms. We collected vaccine related books that appeared on the first 10 search result pages by Amazon for seven consecutive days and content coded each book. We also collected Amazon's recommendations for each vaccine book and mapped the network of recommendation among these books. First, we found that the number of vaccine-hesitant books outnumbered vaccine-supportive books two to one. Of

How Do Partisans Consume News on Social Media? A Comparison of Self-Reports With Digital Trace Measures Among Twitter Users
Jieun Shin
SJR Q1Social Media + SocietyOA

There are growing concerns that social media exacerbates the selective exposure of audience members to content that supports their political views. However, despite the hype, the existing literature does not fully address the extent to which social media users selectively consume like-minded news stories, in part due to different methodologies. In an attempt to move toward a common framework, this study examined the partisan selective exposure of a representative sample of Twitter users by combi

Jieun Shin, Aimei Yang, Wenlin Liu, Hye Min Kim, Alvin Zhou, Jingyi Sun
SJR Q1Social Media + SocietyOA

This study draws on the social identity approach (SIA), to examine how political elites (i.e., members of the 116 th United States Congress) communicated norms about mask-wearing on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using Twitter data collected in 2020, we found that Republican members of Congress were significantly less likely to promote mask-wearing than Democratic members. We also observed some variations in norm-conforming behaviors among the members of each party. For Republicans,

Social Media Metrics in the Digital Marketplace of Attention: Does Journalistic Capital Matter for Social Media Capital?
Jieun Shin, Katherine Ognyanova
SJR Q1Digital Journalism

Drawing on Bourdieu’s field theory, this study investigated how the quality and reputation of news outlets were related to their social media capital. Social media capital is conceptualized as the resources that news organizations can generate via social media efforts, and measured by examining each outlet’s audience size and engagement metrics on Twitter. To triangulate findings, we used social media metrics extracted from (1) the entire population of Twitter users, as well as (2) a representat

Malaria eradication efforts in resource-limited areas require a rapid, economical, and accurate tool for detecting of the low parasitemia. The malaria rapid diagnostic test (mRDT) is the most suitable for on-site detection of the deadliest form of malaria, Plasmodium falciparum. However, the deletions of histidine rich protein 2 and 3 genes are known to compromise the effectiveness of mRDT. One of the approaches that have been explored intensively for on-site diagnostics is the loop-mediated iso

Does high-quality news attract engagement on social media? Mediatization, media logic, and the contrasting values that shape news sharing, liking, and commenting on Facebook
Jieun Shin, Seth C. Lewis, Soojong Kim, Kjerstin Thorson
SJR Q1New Media & Society

Despite the concern over deteriorating news quality on social media, few studies have empirically examined how much high-quality news is rewarded on social media. Guided by the mediatization literature, we compared the extent to which normative values (i.e. factual reporting and public importance) in news stories as opposed to social media values (i.e. popularity) contribute to actual engagement such as sharing, liking, and commenting on Facebook. The normative values and social media values wer

Emotion Sells: Rage Bait vs. Information Bait in Clickbait News Headlines on Social Media
Jieun Shin, Chris DeFelice, Soojong Kim
SJR Q1Digital Journalism

Despite the widespread use of clickbait news headlines, the concept and function of clickbait remain underdeveloped. This study examined clickbait headlines on social media, focusing on which types of news organizations tend to use this content strategy and whether these strategies effectively drive audience engagement. In this article, rather than treating clickbait as a single, uniform category, we distinguish between information bait and rage bait. Our findings show that digital-born media an

Social media metrics and news quality
Jieun Shin

This chapter discusses the relationship between the quality of news and social media metrics. Audience engagement on social media in the form of followers, shares, and likes can provide news media outlets with valuable resources which can be tangible (e.g., advertising opportunities) and intangible (e.g., influence). However, the mechanisms that drive social media engagement are often far from democratic considerations, and subject to other factors. These include algorithmic promotions, partisan

Patient Privacy Decision Making in the Health Big Data Era
Jieun Shin
SJR Q1Journal of the Association for Information Systems

The rapidly growing use of healthcare wearable devices has spurred the increased supply of personal health information. However, in practice, privacy issues are key challenges since these devices are mutually connected to share data, which have not been adequately examined in the literature. This paper provides a new framework for sharing participants’ health information by considering the individuals’ own decision-making process, which meets individual privacy boundaries.
