BACKGROUND: We examined the efficacy of group-based cognitive intervention (GCI) and home-based cognitive intervention (HCI) in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and intervention effects on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). METHODS: In this randomized and rater-blinded trial, 293 patients with aMCI from 18 nationwide hospitals were randomized: 96 to the GCI group, 98 to the HCI group and 99 to the control group. For 12 weeks, subjects receiving GCI participated twice per we

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study investigated whether the topography of hypertensive pontine microhemorrhages (hPMHs) resembles that of larger primary pontine hemorrhages. METHODS: Sixty-nine consecutive patients with small-vessel disease underwent imaging with gradient-echo MRI, and 27 patients with hPMH were detected. Lesion size and location along the rostrocaudal (longitudinal), lateral (coronal), and anteroposterior (sagittal) axes were determined. RESULTS: A total of 52 hPMHs were identi

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) occurs commonly in hikers who are rapidly exposed to high altitude environments. Despite the numerous reports of AMS, few studies have reported pallidal lesions associated with altitude sickness. A previously healthy 49-yr-old Korean patient, after ascent to 4,700 m, suffered symptoms consistent with AMS. After returning home, the patient showed changes in personality characterized by abulia, indifference, and indecisiveness. T2 weighted brain magnetic resonance ima

To identify epigenetically regulated genes involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) we analyzed global mRNA expression and methylation profiles in amyloid precursor protein (APP)-Swedish mutant-expressing AD model cells, H4-sw and selected heme oxygenase-1 (HMOX1), which is associated with pathological features of AD such as neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques. We examined the epigenetic regulatory mechanism of HMOX1 and its application as a diagnostic and prognostic bioma

The results of this study demonstrated the feasibility of dual-phase 18F-FBB PET to evaluate different trajectories of dual biomarkers for neurodegeneration and Aβ burden over the course of AD. In addition, both eFBB and SRTM-based R1 can provide robust indices of brain perfusion.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the efficacy of a multidomain intervention (MI) via face-to-face and video communication platforms using a tablet personal computer application in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Three hundred participants with MCI and ≥ 1 modifiable dementia risk factor, aged 60-85 years, were randomly assigned to either the MI group, who underwent a 24-week intervention, or the control group, who received usual care. RESULTS: The overall adherence rate to M

(1) Background: This study investigated changes in the gut microbial composition of individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and their relationship with positron emission tomography (PET) amyloid accumulation. (2) Methods: In total, 17 cognitively normal individuals without amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation (Aβ−NC) and 24 with Aβ-positive mild cognitive impairment (Aβ+MCI) who underwent 18F-florbetaben PET and fecal bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

The presence of amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition is considered important in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), since they can progress to Alzheimer’s disease dementia. Amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) has been used for detecting Aβ deposition, but its high cost is a significant barrier for clinical usage. Therefore, we aimed to develop a new predictive scale for amyloid PET positivity using easily accessible tools. Overall, 161 aMCI patients were recruited from six memor

Detecting amyloid‐β positivity using regions of interest from structural magnetic resonance imaging
Jeongyoung Hwang, Hee Kyung Park, Hai‐Jeon Yoon, Jee Hyang Jeong, Hyunju Lee, for the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative
SJR Q1European Journal of Neurology

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. Amyloid-β (Aβ) positivity is the main diagnostic marker for AD. Aβ positron emission tomography and cerebrospinal fluid are widely used in the clinical diagnosis of AD. However, these methods only assess the concentrations of Aβ, and the accessibility of these methods is thus relatively limited compared with structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI). METHODS: We investigated whether regions of interest (ROIs)

This study developed machine learning models to predict Aβ positivity in Alzheimer’s disease by integrating early-phase 18 F-Florbetaben PET and clinical data to improve diagnostic accuracy. Furthermore, the study explored machine learning models to predict cognitive status from early-phase PET, maximizing the clinical utility of dual-phase imaging protocols. 176 subjects who completed dual-phase 18 F-FBB PET scanning including 38 with normal cognition, 94 with mild cognitive impairment, and 44

Aberrantly higher functional connectivity in the salience network is associated with transient global amnesia

Triple intrinsic brain networks including the salience network (SN), default mode network (DMN), and central executive network (CEN), are known to be important in human cognition. Therefore, investigating those intrinsic brain networks in transient global amnesia (TGA) may offer novel insight useful for the pathophysiology of TGA. Fifty TGA patients underwent the resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) within 24 h, at 72 h, and 3 months after TGA onset. Twenty-five age, gend

T1-axial MTA visual rating scale (VRS) incorporating Schelten's scale has been developed for the simplified usage and when no coronal images are available. However, one of limitations in the visual assessment of MTA is the lack of widely accepted age-adjusted norms and cut off scores for MTA for the diagnosis of AD. This study aims, therefore, to determine the cut-off scores of T1-weighted axial VRS for an assessment of MTA to differentiate patients with AD from normal control. We enrolled 280 p

This study investigated the earliest change of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and its relationship with β-amyloid (Aβ) burden in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) employing dual-phase 18 F-florbetaben (FBB) PET. Seventy-one cognitively normal (NC) individuals were classified as Aβ negative (Aβ − NC) or positive (Aβ + NC) based on two different cutoff values: an SUVR of > 1.08 and a Centiloid scale of > 20. The PET scans were acquired in two phases: an early phase (0–10 min, eFBB) and a delayed pha
