15Cell lysis was demonstrated on a microfluidic CD (Compact Disc) platform. In this purely mechanical lysis method, spherical particles (beads) in a lysis chamber microfabricated in a CD, cause disruption of mammalian (CHO-K1), bacterial (Escherichia coli), and yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells. Interactions between beads and cells are generated in the rimming flow established inside a partially filled annular chamber in the CD rotating around a horizontal axis. To maximize bead-cell interact
A disposable, self-contained polymerase chain reaction (PCR) chip with on-board stored, just-on-time releasable, paraffin-passivated, dry reagents is described. During both storage and sample preparation, the paraffin immobilizes and protects the stored reagents. Fluid flow through the reactor leaves the reagents undisturbed. Prior to the amplification step, the chamber is filled with target analyte suspended in water. Upon heating the PCR chamber to the DNA's denaturation temperature, the paraf
Recently, there has been a growing interest in point-of-care devices capable of detecting nucleic acids (NA) in clinical and environmental samples. Nucleic acid detection requires, however, various sample preparation steps that complicate device operation. An attractive remedy is to integrate many, if not all, sample preparation operations and nucleic acid amplification into a single reaction chamber. A microfluidic chip that integrates, in a single chamber, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ampli
In this paper, we demonstrate the fabrication and characterization of various 3D solenoid inductors using a glass core substrate. Solenoid inductors were fabricated in glass by drilling through holes in glass and semi-additive copper plating for metallization. This topology is compared to similar solenoid structures in terms of Q-factor performance and inductance density. Inductances of 1.8-4.5nH with Q ~ 60 at 1GHz were demonstrated.
The driving performance of an off-road vehicle is closely related to soil strength. A bevameter is used to measure the soil strength, and it usually consists of two independent devices: a pressure-sinkage test device and a shear test device. However, its development and measurement processes have not been standardized; thus, researchers apply it in various fields according to their own discretion. In this study, a new bevameter was developed, and experiments were conducted to clarify the factors
We present dual-mode, on-demand droplet routing in a multiple-outlet microfluidic device using an oil-based magnetic fluid. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle-contained oleic acid (MNOA) was used as a carrier phase for droplet generation and manipulation. The water-in-MNOA droplets were selectively distributed in a curved microchannel with three branches by utilizing both a hydrodynamic laminar flow pattern and an external magnetic field. Without the applied magnetic field, the droplets travelled al
