Reactive oxygen species-generating hydrogel platform for enhanced antibacterial therapy

SJR Q1NPG Asia MaterialsOA

Abstract Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) have attracted much attention as promising antibacterial agents due to their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) that effectively eliminate bacteria. However, when they are delivered inside the body, this distinct characteristic of ROS is restricted due to the limited penetration depth of external light, which is required for the photocatalysis of particles. To produce ROS without any light source when the particles are implanted, we introduc

Influence of Microbiota on Diabetic Foot Wound in Comparison with Adjacent Normal Skin Based on the Clinical Features

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a complication experienced by diabetic patients and does not heal well in an altered wound environment. Although diverse microbes in DFU were detected, little is known about their influences on diabetic foot wound (DFW) and the association with the skin microbiota in normal tissue from the same patients according to clinical features. We aimed to analyze the microbiota in normal skin and DFW tissue from the same subject and predict their roles based on clinical featu

Although computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) is used to improve the quality of diagnosis in various medical fields such as mammography and colonography, it is not used in dermatology, where noninvasive screening tests are performed only with the naked eye, and avoidable inaccuracies may exist. This study shows that CAD may also be a viable option in dermatology by presenting a novel method to sequentially combine accurate segmentation and classification models. Given an image of the skin, we decompos

Implants based on silicone elastomers, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), have been widely used for breast augmentation and reconstruction, but excessive foreign body reactions around implants often cause serious side effects such as capsular contracture. In our previous study, we covalently grafted 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-based polymers on the surface of PDMS blocks by UV-induced polymerization and showed effective reduction of capsular formation around the MPC-grafted PDMS in

Association between socioeconomic position and diabetic foot ulcer outcomes: a population-based cohort study in South Korea
Jeong Hyun Ha, Heejin Jin, Ji‐Ung Park
SJR Q1BMC Public HealthOA

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic position (SEP) is associated with a high incidence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). However, reports on the association between SEP and DFU outcomes are limited. Therefore, in this study, we investigated this association and determined the prognostic factors of DFU outcomes. METHODS: The total cohort comprised 976,252 individuals. Using probability sampling, we randomly selected a sample of patients by reviewing the data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessmen

Treatment of Postsurgical Scalp Scar Deformity Using Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation
Hyokyung Yoo, Jaeseong Moh, Ji‐Ung Park
SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

BACKGROUND: Although stable cicatricial alopecia (SCA) secondary to surgical events of the scalp can affect patients' psychosocial status, hair transplantation onto postsurgical scar tissue on the scalp is challenging because of tissue stiffness and poor blood circulation. OBJECTIVE: In contrast to traditional surgical treatments, such as excision, local flap, and tissue expansion, follicular unit (FU) hair transplantation offers aesthetically pleasing results in the treatment of postsurgically

Acceleration of the healing process of full-thickness wounds using hydrophilic chitosan–silica hybrid sponge in a porcine model

SJR Q3Journal of Biomaterials Applications

In this study, we evaluated the surface characterization of a novel chitosan-silica hybridized membrane and highlighted the substantial role of silica in the wound environment. The chemical coupling of chitosan and silica resulted in a more condensed network compared with pure chitosan, which was eventually able to stably maintain its framework, particularly in the wet state. In addition, we closely observed the wound-healing process along with the surface interaction between chitosan-silica and

Adipose‐derived stem cells attenuate atopic dermatitis‐like skin lesions in NC/Nga mice

SJR Q1Experimental Dermatology

There is an unmet need in novel therapeutics for atopic dermatitis (AD). We examined the effects of autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) on AD-like skin lesions induced by the application of 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in NC/Nga mice. Autologous ADSCs and ADSC-conditioned medium (ADSC-CM) were injected intralesionally three times. Clinical severity and histopathologic findings were compared in sham naïve control, saline-treated, ADSC-treated, ADSC-CM-treated and 2.5% cortisone lotio

The accelerating effect of chitosan-silica hybrid dressing materials on the early phase of wound healing

SJR Q2Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B Applied Biomaterials

Commercialized dressing materials with or without silver have played a passive role in early-phase wound healing, protecting the skin defects from infections, absorbing exudate, and preventing dehydration. Chitosan (CTS)-based sponges have been developed in pure or hybrid forms for accelerating wound healing, but their wound-healing capabilities have not been extensively compared with widely used commercial dressing materials, providing limited information in a practical aspect. In this study, w

SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence pattern of pressure injuries (PIs), or 'sores', in South Korea and investigate the factors affecting its development. We estimated the annual prevalence of PIs using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) data extracted from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database from 2009 to 2015. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the association between hospitalization and socio-demographic characteristics, such as

Covalently Grafted 2-Methacryloyloxyethyl Phosphorylcholine Networks Inhibit Fibrous Capsule Formation around Silicone Breast Implants in a Porcine Model

The surface of human silicone breast implants is covalently grafted at a high density with a 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-based polymer. Addition of cross-linkers is essential for enhancing the density and mechanical durability of the MPC graft. The MPC graft strongly inhibits not only adsorption but also the conformational deformation of fibrinogen, resulting in the exposure of a buried amino acid sequence, γ377-395, which is recognized by inflammatory cells. Furthermore, the

The Role of Periostin in Capsule Formation on Silicone Implants
Hahn-Sol Bae, Hye-Youn Son, Jung Pyo Lee, Hak Chang, Ji‐Ung Park
SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

Although silicone implants are widely used in breast and other reconstructive surgeries, the limited biocompatibility of these materials leads to severe complications, including capsular contracture. Here, we aimed to clarify the relationship between periostin and the process of capsule formation after in vivo implantation. Seven-week-old wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice and periostin-deficient mice were used. Round silicone implants were inserted into a subcutaneous pocket on the dorsum of the mice.
