BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is subclassified into four subtypes by the presence of impairment in the memory domain (amnestic vs. nonamnestic) and the number of impaired cognitive domains (single vs multiple). However, predictive validity for outcomes of these criteria and the diagnostic stability of the subtypes are questionable. METHODS: We investigated the outcomes of 140 patients with MCI who participated in the baseline study of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Agi

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Although its major manifestation is motor symptoms, resulting from the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, psychiatric symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, hallucination, delusion, apathy and anhedonia, impulsive and compulsive behaviors, and cognitive dysfunction, may also manifest in most patients with PD. Given that the quality of life - and the need for institutionalization - is so highly depen

We developed and evaluated the effect of Multimodal Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (MCET) consisting of cognitive training, cognitive stimulations, reality orientation, physical therapy, reminiscence therapy, and music therapy in combination in older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia. This study was a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, two-period cross-over study (two 8-week treatment phases separated by a 4-week wash-out period). Sixty-four par

Vascular brain injury and neurodegeneration are associated with baseline cognitive performance and the rate of longitudinal change independent of amyloid status among community-dwelling, ethnicity diverse cognitively normal individuals, supporting the role of vascular diseases as risk factors for later-life dementia.

USMART was effective in improving memory and was well tolerated by most participants with MCI, suggesting that it may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative for the cognitive rehabilitation of elderly subjects with cognitive impairments. Further studies with large numbers of participants are necessary to examine the relationship between the number of training sessions and the improvements in memory function.

AIM: To examine the impact of the revised diagnostic criteria for neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) on the prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: A total of 755 participants aged 65 years or older in the Nationwide Survey on Dementia Epidemiology in Korea 2012 were rediagnosed according to the DSM-5 criteria. RESULTS: The estimated age-, gender-, education-, and urbanicity-standardized p

Impaired Glymphatic Flow on Diffusion Tensor MRI as a Marker of Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s Disease: Correlation with Gray Matter Volume Loss and Cognitive Decline Independent of Cerebral Amyloid Deposition

SJR Q1Journal of Alzheimer s Disease

Background: Impaired glymphatic flow on the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum may be evaluated using diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS). Objective: We aimed to validate impaired glymphatic flow and explore its association with gray matter volume, cognitive status, and cerebral amyloid deposition on the AD spectrum. Methods: 80 participants (mean age, 76.9±8.5 years; 57 women) with AD (n = 65) and cognitively normal (CN) (n = 15) who underwent 3T brain MRI inc

Background and objectives We evaluated the effectiveness of a Korean version of the Couples Life Story Approach (CLSA-K), a structured life-review program originally developed in the U.S. to help older adults with dementia and their spousal caregivers engage with each other and improve their quality of life. Research design and methods: Fifty mild people living with mild Alzheimer’s disease and their spouses were recruited and 37 couples completed the five-week CLSA-K program. Data on psychosoci

Importance: Although couples may share many risk factors for depressive disorders in their lifetime, whether these factors mediate the shared risk of depressive disorders has rarely been investigated. Objectives: To identify the shared risk factors for depressive disorder in couples and investigate their mediating roles in the shared risk of depressive disorders among older adult couples. Design, Setting, and Participants: This nationwide, multicenter, community-based cohort study assessed 956 o

The criterion on functional activity in the revised diagnostic criteria for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) seems to be conceptually and operationally problematic. We investigated the predictive validity for dementia of this criterion in 140 patients with MCI who participated in the baseline study of the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging and completed 18-month follow-up evaluation (mean duration of follow-up, 1.57±0.24 y). Annual conversion rates to dementia were compared between the

SJR Q2Foodborne Pathogens and Disease

To survey the diversity of plasmid-mediated β-lactamases, and the replicon types of the plasmids in Escherichia coli in the community, 95 multidrug-resistant E. coli isolates from stool samples of pigs in Korea from 2001 to 2011 were analyzed, and all isolates were confirmed as β-lactamase-producing bacteria, which mostly carried genes encoding TEM (100%), ACC (95%), SHV (62%), OXA (28%), CTX-M (26%), and NDM-1 (15%). Moreover, each isolate contained at least three β-lactamases genes on its plas
