15The increased reliance on colistin for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections has resulted in the emergence of colistin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We attempted to identify genetic contributors to colistin resistance in vitro evolved isogenic colistin-resistant and -susceptible strains of two P. aeruginosa lineages (P5 and P155). Their evolutionary paths to acquisition and loss of colistin resistance were also tracked. Comparative genomic analysis revealed 13 and f
While deepfake has emerged as a severe issue in the multimedia environment, most studies examined text-based false claims, leaving the question of what unique features of video-based deepfake news deceives recipients and how it can be corrected. By conducting two online experiments, we study perceived source vividness as a psychological mechanism of the effect of AI-enabled deepfake news on news credibility and engagement intentions. Furthermore, we test how an inserted false-tag onto the fake n
Colistin-resistant mutants were obtained from 17 colistin-susceptible strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli. The stability of colistin resistance in these mutants was investigated. Three of four colistin-resistant P. aeruginosa mutants recovered colistin susceptibility in colistin-free medium; however, colistin-susceptible revertants were obtained from only one strain each of A. baumannii and E. coli. No susceptible revertants wer
Our data suggest that individual two-component systems may not be essential for the acquisition of colistin resistance in P. aeruginosa. The PhoPQ two-component system may play a major role in the development of colistin resistance in our strains, but alternative or compensatory pathways may exist.
This study addresses how social media interaction affects misperceptions about COVID-19 via risk perceptions thereof and whether political orientation moderates the relationship. Using original two-wave panel survey data (<i>N</i> = 679), this study reveals that social media interaction increases misperception directly, as well as indirectly by reducing the extent of risk perception. The extent of risk perception is found to be a negative predictor of misperception. The deleterious role of socia
The in vitro activity of colistin was evaluated against 215 nonduplicated Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, including 53 multidrug-resistant isolates, which were collected between 2006 and 2007 from nine tertiary care hospitals in Korea. Colistin-nonsusceptible P. aeruginosa (CNPA) isolates were genotyped using multilocus sequence typing. Sixteen (7.4%) CNPA isolates (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC], >2 mg/l) were identified, including three resistant isolates. All but one of the MDR P. ae
As smoking has emerged as a health-risk behavior, communication scholars and practitioners have put many efforts into finding out ways to achieve smoking cessation. In this research, participants (N = 57) were randomly assigned to a spatial augmented reality (SAR) condition (3D projection mapping) and 2D flat screen to be exposed to an anti-smoking message. This research provides insightful evidence that the effects of SAR on people’s behavioral intention to spread anti-smoking messages online c
Recent studies have shown mixed findings regarding the relationship between network heterogeneity on social media and opinion polarization. Focusing on individual-level variables (i.e., individuals' political orientation, fear of a risky situation, and fear of an out-group), the objective of this study was to investigate opinion polarization over North Korean issues that have brought out threats to South Koreans and tangled with political orientations in the nation. Our analysis indicated that n
How to combat the spread of misinformation on social media is a long-standing issue in the academic and practical fields, but creating effective correction strategies remains a challenge. Moreover, why people use social media has not been considered in understanding the effects of correction on misperception. Building on existing research, the current study examines two agendas: (a) whether different conditions of correction – no correction, web add-on correction and narrative correction – affec
The emergent body of scholarship on social media influencers (SMIs) highlights their potential to yield positive brand advertising outcomes. However, the literature is undermined by the lack of clarity regarding how SMIs conceptually compare to celebrity endorsers and their impact on advertising outcomes. The study aims to clarify these differences via a meta-analysis of 39 experimental studies (total sample size = 13,766) of SMI effects from 2010 through March 2024. Findings reveal that SMIs ar
Abstract We recently demonstrated a high rate of colistin dependence in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates exposed to colistin in vitro . In the present study, we obtained a colistin-resistant (H08-391R) and colistin-dependent mutant (H08-391D) from a colistin-susceptible parental strain (H08-391). We found that the colistin-dependent mutant converted into a stable colistin-resistant mutant (H08-391D-R) in vitro after four serial passages without colistin. H08-391D and H08-391D-R were both found t
The characteristics of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates from Korea were investigated. Two major clones, clonal complex (CC) 235 and CC641, were identified. CC235, an important international clone, might have been imported recently in Korea as this clone displayed a homogeneous genotype, oprD mutation and antimicrobial resistance profile. While 13 ST235 isolates harboured the blaIMP-6 gene, which conferred high-level meropenem resistance, CC641 isolates showed high biofilm-formi
