15Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) method is the only viable method for reducing massive amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to prevent the subsequent environmental and health threats. However, the process is accompanied with geomechanical risks due to the unavoidable pore pressure buildup, such as caprock failure, reactivation of existing faults, poroelastic response of rock and well integrity loss. Not only may the risks lead to undesirable environmental concerns such as CO2
The CO 2 trap mechanisms during carbon capture and storage (CCS) are classified into structural, residual, solution, and mineral traps. The latter is considered as the most permanent and stable storage mechanism as the injected CO 2 is stored in solid form by the carbon mineralization. In this study, the carbon mineralization process in geological CO 2 storage in basalt, sandstone, carbonate, and shale are reviewed. In addition, relevant studies related to the carbon mineralization mechanisms, a
Vibration Analysis (VA) is the most commonly used technique in predictive maintenance. It allows the diagnosis of faults, especially those in the early stages. The use of VA is important for maintenance costs and downtime savings, making decisions about repair and total replacement. The method has been applied in many industries and proven to be effective. It is applicable to rotating, non-rotating equipment, continuous processes or even construction structure. In this paper, vibration analysis
Deposition and precipitation of paraffin wax in pipelines are major problems in the production, transfer, storage, and processing of crude oil. To prevent complete clogging, it is necessary to minimize and remove deposited wax in pipelines and tubing. Significant research has been done addressing the mechanisms of wax formation and its composition. In this review, the status of research and perspectives on the occurrence and characterization of the paraffin wax that forms in crude oil developing
Electrical submersible pump (ESP) operation is compromised by free gas, resulting in premature pump failure and production losses in new wells. It is essential to detect the onset of abnormal operations. We develop a model that predicts abnormal ESP operation when the free gas level increases in the pump. The model compares operation parameters with the parameters of normal operating ranges; it shuts down the ESP when necessary. We used a Schlumberger PIPESIM software (version 2017.01) to perfor
The Paris Climate Agreement of 2015, along with the commitments in the South Korean 2050 Carbon-Neutral Scenario, highlights the importance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to counter advancing global warming . During CCS, carbon-dioxide enriched fluid is injected into a geological formation, which causes pore pressure increases. The CCS must occur safe and stable, which requires geomechanical modeling to analyze the effects of formation uplift and subsidence . In this study, surface uplift a
This study aims at the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) model to optimize relief well design in Pohang Basin, South Korea. Relief well design in carbon capture and geological storage (CCS) requires complex processes and excessive iterative procedures to obtain optimal operating parameters, such as CO2 injection rate, water production rate, distance between the wells, and pressure at the wells. To generate training and testing datasets for ANN model development, optimization proc
Most shale gas reservoirs have extremely low permeability. Predicting their fluid transport characteristics is extremely difficult due to complex flow mechanisms between hydraulic fractures and the adjacent rock matrix. Recently, studies adopting the dynamic modeling approach have been proposed to investigate the shape of the flow regime between induced and natural fractures. In this study, a production history matching was performed on a shale gas reservoir in Canada’s Horn River basin. Hypocen
Abstract The reliable diagnosis of electrical submersible pump (ESP) failure is a vital process for establishing of the optimal production strategies and achieving minimum development costs. Although traditional ammeter charts and nodal analysis are commonly used for ESP failure diagnosis, the techniques have limitations, as it requires manpower and is difficult to diagnose the failure in real-time. Therefore, in this study, ESP failure diagnosis was performed using the principal component analy
