15Acute kidney injury (AKI) after pediatric cardiac surgery is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Modifiable risk factors for postoperative AKI including perioperative anesthesia-related parameters were assessed. The authors conducted a single-center, retrospective cohort study of 220 patients (aged 10 days to 19 years) who underwent congenital cardiac surgery between January and December 2012. The incidence of AKI within 7 days postoperatively was determined using the Kidney Disease: I
BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) refers to use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in cardiopulmonary arrest. Although ECPR can increase survival rates after cardiac arrest, it can also result in poor post-resuscitation neurological status. Thus, we investigated predictors of good neurological outcomes after successful ECPR. METHODS: A total of 227 patients underwent ECPR from May 2004 to June 2013 at Samsung Medical Center. Successful ECPR was defined as
BACKGROUND: The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is an instrument that is commonly used to screen for depression in patients with chronic disease, but the characteristics of the CES-D in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) have not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the criterion validities and the predictive powers of the CES-D for depression and anxiety disorders in adults with CHD. METHODS: Two hundred patients were screened with the C
OBJECTIVE: Tricuspid valve replacement (TVR) has a high postoperative mortality, despite recent advances in perioperative care. We report the results of our experience in TVR with an emphasis on early mortality and morbidity and long-term follow-up. METHODS: Between October 1994 and August 2007, 80 consecutive TVRs were performed in 78 patients. The mean age was 48+/-14 (range: 20-70) years. The underlying disease of the patients was classified as rheumatic (n=54), congenital (n=12), endocarditi
OBJECTIVES: Treatment of long-segment congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS) remains challenging. Recently, slide tracheoplasty has become the standard approach in many centres. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of slide tracheoplasty. METHODS: Between 2004 and 2011, 18 patients underwent slide tracheoplasty in our centre. The median patient age was 2.5 months (range, 18 days-4 years) and the median body weight was 4.2 (range, 2.2-17.7) kg at operation. Eleven (61%) patient
Long-segment tracheal stenosis in infants and small children is difficult to manage and can be life-threatening. A retrospective review of 12 patients who underwent surgery for congenital tracheal stenosis between 1996 and 2004 was conducted. The patients' median age was 3.6 months. All patients had diffuse tracheal stenosis involving 40-61% (median, 50%) of the length of the trachea, which was suspected to be associated with complete tracheal ring. Five patients had proximal bronchial stenosis
We investigated the utility of comprehensive scoring systems for organ failure compared with the duration of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in predicting survival after heart transplantation. From November 2004 to August 2013, 25 adult patients ultimately underwent heart transplantation while on ECLS. We did not include patients who were younger than 18 years old or patients with extracorporeal ventricular assist devices. Seven patients (28%) died within 1 year after transplantation. The are
OBJECTIVES: To maintain pulmonary valvar function subsequent to repair of tetralogy of Fallot, we have inserted a homograft monocusp when a transjunctional patch was required. In this study, we have evaluated the mid- to long-term outcomes, aiming to determine the durability of the homograft. METHODS: Among 218 repairs performed for tetralogy of Fallot between July, 1996, and June, 2005, we inserted homograft monocusps in 54 patients, 4 of whom had associated absent pulmonary valve syndrome, 3 h

OBJECTIVE: A group of patients with pulmonary atresia and intact ventricular septum (PAIVS) have to undergo single ventricle repair. In these patients, the presence of the non-functioning right ventricle (RV) may lead to the aggravation of RV to coronary connections and left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. To prevent these deleterious effects, the RV was excluded surgically. METHODS: Between December 2000 and February 2006, 10 patients with PAIVS underwent RV exclusion in conjunction with cavo-pul
