15Abstract Despite the critical role played by carbon monoxide (CO) in physiological and pathological signaling events, current approaches to deliver this messenger molecule are often accompanied by off‐target effects and offer limited control over release kinetics. To address these challenges, we develop an electrochemical approach that affords on‐demand release of CO through reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) dissolved in the extracellular space. Electrocatalytic generation of CO by cobalt phth
Understanding and modulating proton-mediated biochemical processes in living organisms have been impeded by the lack of tools to control local pH. Here, we design nanotransducers capable of converting noninvasive alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) into protons in physiological environments by combining magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with polymeric scaffolds. When exposed to AMFs, the heat dissipated by MNPs triggered a hydrolytic degradation of surrounding polyanhydride or polyester, releasing pr
Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have attracted increasing attention in efforts to overcome fundamental issues faced by the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor industry. Multilayer TMD materials such as MoS2 can be used for high-performance transistor-based applications; the drive currents are high and the materials handle low-frequency (LF) noise well. We fabricated double-gated multilayer MoS2 transistors using the h-BN dielectric for th
Redox cofactors mediate many enzymatic processes and are increasingly employed in biomedical and energy applications. Exploring the influence of external magnetic fields on redox cofactor chemistry can enhance our understanding of magnetic-field-sensitive biological processes and allow the application of magnetic fields to modulate redox reactions involving cofactors. Through a combination of experiments and modeling, we investigate the influence of magnetic fields on electrochemical reactions i
Abstract Utilization of biodegradable metals in biomedical fields is emerging because it avoids high-risk and uneconomic secondary surgeries for removing implantable devices. Mg and its alloys are considered optimum materials for biodegradable implantable devices because of their high biocompatibility; however, their excessive and uncontrollable biodegradation is a difficult challenge to overcome. Here, we present a novel method of inhibiting Mg biodegradation by utilizing reduced nicotinamide a
Abstract A new antibacterial strategy for Ti has been developed without the use of any external antibacterial agents and surface treatments. By combining Mg alloys with Ti, H 2 O 2 , which is an oxidizing agent that kills bacteria, was spontaneously generated near the surface of Ti. Importantly, the H 2 O 2 formation kinetics can be precisely controlled by tailoring the degradation rates of Mg alloys connected to Ti. Through microstructural and electrochemical modification of Mg with alloying el
Informal cross-border trade (ICBT) refers to the illegal activities of cross-border commerce conducted by unregistered small-scale traders. We seek to develop insights to understand the ICBT value chain and offer policy recommendations to successfully integrate it into the formal economy. Using a game-theoretic model, we analyze the operations and key market dynamics of ICBT. We analyze the policy implications of three representative UN directives: enhancing marginalized traders’ access to forma
Despite significant advances in the design of metallic materials for bare metal stents (BMSs), restenosis induced by the accumulation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) has been a major constraint on improving the clinical efficacy of stent implantation. Here, a new strategy for avoiding this issue by utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated by the galvanic coupling of nitinol (NiTi) stents and biodegradable magnesium-zinc (Mg-Zn) alloys is reported. The amount of H2</s

Abstract Bioelectrosynthesis holds great potential for studying and regulating biological systems through the in situ synthesis and delivery of cell signaling molecules with high spatiotemporal precision. Despite recent advancements, precise control over multiple signaling molecules within a single platform remains challenging. Here, we introduce a bioelectrosynthesis approach capable of selectively producing two types of signaling molecules from a single precursor. This system leverages multi‐m

This paper examines how the need for immediate cash by smallholder farmers may lead to undesirable selling decisions that hurt their revenue and analyzes the efficacy of government loan policies in tackling this challenge. We develop a game-theoretic model to characterize the base scenario of no loan, uncovering the impacts of cash needs on farmers’ revenue. We then examine how a government loan, under which farmers store some of their production at government warehouses in exchange for immediat
