15OBJECTIVES: Although many bacteriology studies on tonsillar diseases have been completed, all have been confined to children and were characterized by a paucity of cases. The purpose of this study was to analyze the underlying bacterial pathogens in tonsillar disease. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 824 patients who underwent elective tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy. We analyzed the differences between the bacterial pathogens in recurrent tonsillitis and tonsillar hyp
BACKGROUND: The ciliary epithelial cells in the paranasal sinuses produce nasal nitric oxide (NO) continuously and plays a variety of roles in the paranasal sinuses. The purpose of this study was to assess whether we can use the levels of nasal NO (nNO) and exhaled NO (eNO) as a tool for evaluation in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with nasal polyp patients. METHODS: We used chemiluminescent NO analyzer to measure nNO and eNO among normal controls (32) and CRS with polyp (30) and CRS with polyp an
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate how the expression of the RANK-RANKL-OPG system mediates the formation and differentiation of osteoclasts and causes bone resorption in cholesteatoma. METHODS: An immunohistochemical analysis was carried out in 22 cholesteatoma tissues obtained during middle ear surgery and 15 normal postauricular skin tissues to examine the expression of RANKL and OPG. RESULTS: All 22 cases of cholesteatoma and the 15 cases of normal postauricular skin
BACKGROUND: The treatment options for odontogenic sinusitis (OS) include medical management including antibiotics and saline nasal irrigation, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), and dental treatment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether OS caused by dental caries and periapical abscess can be cured by dental treatment alone and which patients should consider surgery early. METHODS: A total of 33 patients with OS caused by dental caries and periapical abscess were enrolled. P
Glucose metabolism is a key metabolic pathway that orchestrates cellular homeostasis by generating ATP, nucleotides, and amino acids. Abnormal glucose signaling has been found in many diseases including cancers and inflammatory diseases. According to recent report, glycolysis contributes to pathogenesis of psoriasis and ablation of Glut1 attenuates animal models of psoriasis. While we were screening a molecular target for atopic dermatitis, we found the levels of glucose transporters including G
In many species submucosal glands are an important source of tracheal mucus, but the extent to which mucociliary clearance (MCC) depends on gland secretion is unknown. To explore this relationship, we measured basal and agonist-stimulated MCC velocities in ex vivo tracheas from adult ferrets and compared the velocities with previously measured rates of ferret glandular mucus secretion (Cho HJ, Joo NS, Wine JJ. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 299: L124-L136, 2010). Stimulated MCC velocities (m
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical significance of cardiovascular factors, including arterial stiffness and metabolic syndrome scores, in the development of vestibular neuritis. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, case-control study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Fifty-eight adult patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) and 58 age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated between January 2015 and January 2016. INTERVENTION: Measurement of arterial stiffness. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Arte
Cellular metabolism is one of the crucial factors to regulate epigenetic landscape in various cells including immune cells, embryonic stem cells and hair follicle stem cells. Dermal papilla cells (DP) interact with epithelial stem cells to orchestrate hair formation. Here we show that active DP exhibit robust aerobic glycolysis. We observed decrease of signature genes associated with hair induction by DP in presence of low glucose (2 mM) and glycolysis inhibitors. Moreover, hair shaft elongation
Glut2 is one of the facilitative glucose transporters expressed by preimplantation and early postimplantation embryos. Glut2 is important for survival before embryonic day 10.5. The Glut2 KM (∼16 mmol/liter) is significantly higher than physiologic glucose concentrations (∼5.5 mmol/liter), suggesting that Glut2 normally performs some essential function other than glucose transport. Nevertheless, Glut2 efficiently transports glucose when extracellular glucose concentrations are above the Glut2 KM
Triad 1 (2 RING [really interesting new gene] fingers and DRIL [double RING finger linked] 1) is an E3 ligase that induces apoptosis and clonogenic inhibition in myeloid cells through Gfi-1 stabilization. Here we demonstrate that Triad 1 induces apoptosis in several cancer cell lines including MCF7, A549, U2OS, and HCT 116 p53(+/+) cells via its RING ligase activity. Interestingly, in these cancer cells, Triad 1-induced apoptosis is not mediated by Gfi-1 stabilization but is instead p53-dependen
OBJECTIVES: It is extremely difficult to obtain ideal tip projection and nose lengthening by septal extension graft using only septal cartilage in Asians, because their nasal septal and alar cartilages are small and weak. Therefore, we introduce a new septal extension graft using a cartilage-bone complex with the vomer and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone as well as cartilage to obtain optimal outcomes. METHODS: Participants included 30 patients who underwent surgery by external appro
